Blame Judges for Poor Calypso Turnout

De BearDear Editor, Since the judges’ decision is final, let me first congratulate the winner “De Bear”.

After a 12-year absence from the calypso show, I was convinced by a few friends to go on Sunday night. What a waste of time and money! I realise the crowd is getting smaller, thanks to the judges - at least they are doing a good job at that.

I heard De Bear's interview on Observer and I am convinced that not even he was sure that he won; again, congrats to the judges.

As I watched and listened to the show I was very impressed with Princess Thalia, GB and King Fiah in the first round. King Fiah seemed to be a victim of what was going on backstage, which prompted the (Master of Ceremonies) to get some holy water.

A man put some music and words together and called it a calypso, took advantage of the lack of thinking judges, and won.

In the first round, he specifically called on Caribbean islands to play their part, but the first island he called to take her place was Guyana. My dear judges Guyana is not an island.

The song went on to call on the islands Jamaica and Trinidad to take their places. The calypso never developed to say take your place and do what. I think I remember the famous saying "one from 10 leaves none". I would like to know what these big sisters must take their places and do.

I want De Bear to understand that I give him credit that he is able to take advantage of the lack of real judges that he can even use the term Mother England and get away with it. Well, Judges, our Mother country is Africa.

He went on to call on Trinidad about its gold and diamond. Well, that's news to me; I never knew Trinidad had gold and diamonds.

Then there was the second round -- same idea from last year; same king; same judges; same results; same reason crowd getting smaller.

I saw a Garden of Eden elevated, but Adam and Eve were grounded. I saw a blue kitchen without roof, but people complaining of getting wet. I even saw good judges as spectators.

Congrats to De Bear, even though I saw it differently.

First of all let me say that I am not one for blasting anyone for trying to do their best but the best did not show its head this night at the A.R.G. the winner by far for me was Princess Thalia, King Fiah and Queen Alvena why their songs had stucture, good lyrical contents and good clarity and delivery that is my three why De Bear did not dot it for me was that the first song did not give us an example as to how to get things done and secondly the host country was never mentioned that night and to be always re**ing another singers song does'nt do it for me that king of a stuff is for the tents.

"Judges" in Antigua continue to allow Leroy King to walk free.

Who gives one drop of pi$$ over what their glorified aspiring rapper judges think?

Judges judge not entertain!

#7 Dig It » 2012-08-09 19:26

The judges have a "criteria" to follow, which will not be pleased to many. However, the calypsonians are the ones who set the "standards" in entertaining the crowd at ARG, not the judges! I will not get involve in who should have won the crown because the final decision will always be "undermined," regardless if you have Antiguan or Trinidadian judges. It is up to the Calypsonian Association to find a system in judging that will work for the majority of them who felt "treated" by the judges. That will be hard to find, when some calypsonians are "badminded" and think they it is all about them or that they own Carnival!

While I will agree that in past years, judges' decisions could have been blamed for dissatisfaction , I don't think the same is true today. The problem with calypso is the calpysonians themselves. They have moved from singing social commentary to political commentary and most often, the political commentary is personal, or has an ounce of truth and a pound of half truths and propoganda. The songs being song are not general in nature in a way that can appeal to everyone and are not timeless. I personally agree with the judges decision. I actually though Althea had the best songs, however her arrangers never seem to do her justice. Her songs are usually sweet and melodic and well written, but lack the punch needed for her to reach higher. Props to Thalia as well I see wonderful things in her future. The general quality of the show was not the best, compared to other years, but the calypsonians are to be blamed, not the judges.

No more Judges

#5 sitco » 2012-08-08 22:53

Let us have the people's choice calypso with no judges, the winner will be determine by the amount of votes via texting. Trust me if rampler (fix the road an them) was a part of the show i would have attended. I remember a year Onion won with swim shark a come and some people think he should not won, but guest what calypso was sweeter.

The writer seem to have seen it all when it comes to the bear,i wonder what he/she saw coming from the 1st runner up. Tell us the relevance of his first song, from my knowledge Mandella was freed some 20+ yrs ago,was he imprisoned lately? As to princess Thalia she has come a long way,but certainly not far enough to have won a crown or even place in Sundays competition.

Its called survival of the fittest. Even if the Calypso show was free and we had tip top judges the results would be the same. The judges have nothing to do with it. The youith are more interested in US and Jamaican culture than our homegrown music. Gone are the days when Calypso results had to be announced the following Monday morning for fear of riots at the grounds.
Soca has overthrown calypso and calypso has to reinvent itself to remain relevant.

The writer is not nitpicking, I am still trying to sort out how he won. He is right, get the facts right in your song, it is the biggest offense when an artists is singing about something and don't know what he is talking about.

Hate to do it but..

#1 dadlison » 2012-08-08 10:17

Since you were nitpicking Da Bear I'd like to also like to nitpick your line:

"Well, Judges, our Mother country is Africa."

Africa is not a country but a massive continent, a sub-section of which our ancestors came from.
