Open Letter to Talk Show Hosts

SpeculationsDear Radio Talk Show Hosts. Stop trying to mislead the people with your idle chatter about the possibility of certain named ruling party politicians breaking rank to join forces with the opposition to vote in favour of the proposed motion of no confidence in the prime minister.

The scenario favoured by the talk show hosts is one where the chief servant would have to resign and hand the country over to the leader of the opposition after losing the vote of no confidence.

In support of their argument, these wanna-be shapers of public opinion have quoted section 69 of the constitution. Apart from the fact that this is not the appropriate provision, they also appear oblivious to the fact that if the prime minister were to throw in the towel, all the other members of the government would have to follow suit and resign as well. It matters not whether they had called in sick, abstained, or voted by secret ballot or an open show of hands. The entire cabinet would suffer the same fate as the fallen party leader.

Go to the back of the class all you unlearned talk show hosts! But take it easy. Before you go, please check out section 73 of the constitution where it says:

“where the house passes a resolution supported by the votes of a majority of all members of the house declaring that it has no confidence in the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister does not within seven days of the passing of that resolution either resign from his office or advise the Governor General to dissolve Parliament, the Governor-General shall revoke the appointment of Prime Minister."

Maybe the talk show hosts are referring to another Baldwin Spencer, and not the one I know who is the present prime minister. The fellow of their acquaintance would resign, but my guy, whom I have studied like a book, will immediately carry the country to a general election.

A vote of no confidence may be treated by the popular talk show hosts as a lighthearted joke, but to the sensible students of politics, it is no laughing matter. Such an important measure was designed to help preserve a healthy democracy by making sure a runaway government is kept in check.

As things stand now, the proposed move has not been well thought out. The optics are dead wrong - all the angles have not been covered.

Maybe those talk show hosts who delight in vapid speculation can tell us if the opposition would go back to the polls before the High Court determines the case were the supervisor of election has been stripped of some of her powers under the recent amendments to election law.

Are we to take it then that the allegation that the ruling party wants to rig the next election has no merit?

It is one thing for politicians masquerading as talk show hosts to string the people along heedlessly, but a professional radio personality and co-talk show hosts should stick to the known facts and not be tempted to joining their “let's fool the people game”. Remember the entire world has ears.

Why hurry, why not wait for normal democratic process??

my answer is as follows:_
1. because I have ben unemployed for one year though trained and experience no one seem to be hiring not UPP supportors or friends of friends.

2. I am about to lose my home in foreclosure I wll be homeless and jobless

3. There are too many others just like me

Now if you are not feeling the heat of this kind of poverty, you are well fed , bills paid and you have paid your rent and mortgage. Shut up?????

No confidence or not coming from the rest of the UPP goons is not a factor, the thing is the Majority of Antiguans have no confidence in "Your Guy" according to you,we will demonstrate that shortly,@Concer n antiguan. Having never been a part of those who elected DD (double dumb) as Pm,i still think the contract he was elected on has been breached times over, you should be encouraging the man to give up,instead of colluding with them to continue destroying the country, that is what you should be concerned about,You fool.

The ALP should not be in such much hurry to assume governing. The people have already decided on the government of the day. ALP be patience. Your time may come again. Do not mess up like you did before if & when your time come. The people have spoken by electing UPP & Mr. Spencer. Let thing runs its natural course. What is your hurry?

It is amazing how allot of "political brainiacs" who never ever won any elections in Antigua & Barbuda STILL under estimate the political intelligence of Lester Bird. They know it all ... they covered every angle in Lester Bird and all the ALP execs minds ... he is the only one in Antigua who read and understands the constitution ... everyone else stopped at section 69.

AL Q the article stated:Quote:

. Isn't Dean Jonas the PR man for the ALP? Isn't he also a political candidate? Should I instead quote Jaonne Messiah? Today is the first time I have heard the suggestion that a no confidence vote by UPP parliamentarian s would result in LB being PM. AL Q be honest, have you heard any politician on the ALP side suggesting such rubbish?

Rick you are absolutely right. All they are doing is dumb down their Comrades who believe the Government will fall come Thursday. The irony is, there are many who believe it. What a shame.

what is the writer listening to?

#3 tenman » 2012-05-29 09:32

I am at a loss at what caused the writer to pen this article. Is this Rick's attempt to protect his guy (his words not mine)? Rick claims persons seem unaware that this will inevitability result in a general election but an article, interviewing Dean Jonas, shows contrary:
Quote:
(According to Jonas) A successful vote of no confidence will mark the end of Baldwin Spencer's tenure as prime minister, and clear the way for the appointment of what Jonas refers to as a "caretaker leader" to take the country into the general elections constitutionally due by 2014. The ALP PRO advanced the view that in the event of a successful motion of no confidence in Baldwin Spencer's leadership, the ALP parliamentary group would throw its support behind any member of the UPP majority who stepped forward to assume the leadership role as interim prime minister. While this would by no means amount to a UPP/ALP coalition government, the ALP would provide critical support for a caretaker government pending general elections. Say What?

#2 skyewill » 2012-05-29 09:12

Nice work Mr. James. I always love when you write, I agree with you 100% and in fact I wish the PM well. You see rick those who are talking are the ones with no clue. Who among them is worthy? What next after they get the NC vote? (Will not happen) What is the plan? This is an example of propaganda fueling news. All governments need the support of its people and the people need support of their government.
Mr. James, if nobody thanks you for the great work you are doing then allow me. You Mr. James are a national hero. Your contribution to our democracy is faithful. Thank You!
