Final Stage of Million Euro Project

Participants at standards workshopAntigua St. John's - Regional officials are gathered in Antigua for the final workshop in a project valued at one million euros that aims to establish a standardised system of measurement in the Caribbean.

Officials from the Antigua & Barbuda Bureau of Standards as well as representatives from Guyana, Suriname, Haiti, St Vincent & the Grenadines and the Dominican Republic are taking part in the five-day activity.

Several weeks ago, a workshop was held with another group of regional states.

Over the next three days, those gathered here will conduct on-site visits to the National Solid Waste Management Authority facility at Cooks, the General Post Office, APUA Water Laboratory, Seagull Inflatables, Antigua & Barbuda Fishing Association, Caricement, Analytical Services, and West Indies Oil Company.

"We're reaching out to the industry clients," explained David Tomlinson, Technical Officer responsible for Metrology at the Caricom Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality, CROSQ.

"We are building the capacity of member states to do calibrations of weighing instruments such as scales and balances. This is an area of first priority because everybody uses weights and mass to determine everything...its building up the capacity to be internationally recognised in the area of mass metrology.

"It directly relates to trade member states want to know that we are capable of producing quality and meeting the requirements."

The workshop is funded by the German government. Earlier this year, Antigua & Barbuda received calibration equipment as part of the project..
