PM Spencer Supports Closer CARICOM Relations

PM Spencer Supports Closer CARICOM RelationsAntigua St John's - Just moments before the commencement of the 33rd Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Thursday, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Baldwin Spencer voiced his support for CARICOM and the process of regional integration.

Spencer told the gathereing that Antigua and Barbuda remains committed to the cause of CARICOM, and as the region continues to grapple with the effects of a global economy in crisis, he believes that the regional grouping is even more relevant than it was over 20 years ago.

“As we sit down to continue the process of regional integration, which is a vital aspect of ensuring that CARICOM survives, Antigua and Barbuda believes that we can learn from each other’s experiences and cement our trading arrangements and capitalise on the rich human resources within the region. We possess the expertise, knowledge and human capital that can ensure our survival. Our survival is dependent on us realising the ideals enshrined in the principles of CARICOM,” he said.

The country’s leader said that Antigua and Barbuda’s record as it relates to integration and free movement of people is unmatched, and his government remains fully committed to the process.

Prime Minister Spencer, who is accompanied by ambassadors Dr. Clarence Henry and Anthony Liverpool, noted that the three-day meeting will address issues of economic development, the region’s foreign policy, Haiti, and the sustainability of the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).

The Issue of LIAT will also feature prominently on the leaders’ agenda.

Spencer supports Closer CARICOM Relations

I am wondering when did the PM realize how important this relationship is for Antigua? One cannot forget the words coming from the Ambassader for Cxxx & Axxxx who made public after the 2009 election, that it was the influence of foreign votes that caused the UPP govt to loose an extra 3 seats in the election. He went on to single out caricom citizens from Guyana and Jamaica using words of xxxxxtion, whom he allegedly said should be repatriated immediately. There after, you have heard chilling stories from relative of victims of these particular countries, who talk about immigration officers visiting their homes in the midnight hours, taking victims from their homes to a holding cell, and then to the airport to board flights destined to their homeland. The law which states only a magistrate has the right to carry out an order of deportation has been neglected many times. The PM has to do some damage control for his govt past actions in regards to caricom citizens because negative situations are not easily forgotten.

PM BS Again?

#1 Dr. Tom Ralph » 2012-07-06 12:49

CARICOM is as dead as a horse buried five years ago. All talk. PM BS keeps driving out Caricom professionals and allowing others from depressed Caribbean islands to come to Anu for prostitution. Where is the commitment to CARICOM other than words? In practice, our leaders chat foolishness but operation at variance to each other. NO unified foriegn policy. No unified energy policy. No unified CCJ policy. No operational Economic policy. Nothing but empty noise and empty talk. They protect small islands and their little power holes at the expense of the regional growth and advancement.
