The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission still has not been given the necessary funds to carry out its work, particularly if an election is called. The last word from official sources was that a request went to Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Finance Minister Harold Lovell.
Some of the officers who work with the commission are also yet to be paid, which is not an unfamiliar problem affecting government departments lately.
The Electoral Commission revealed on the weekend that it was experiencing problems with its computer system, which has resulted in errors showing up in the Revised Register of Electors.
“The glitch is not allowing new data to be included on the updated registers,” a press statement from the Commission said on the weekend.
“ABEC staff and registration officers have been diligently scrutinizing the registers to ensure all the relevant information is now included,” it added.
Electors were told not to worry, since their names will show up once the problems are rectified.
Communications Director Colin James said with the support of the government’s IT department, the problem should be fixed soon.
