ALP Hires International Pollster

International pollster Bill JohnsonAntigua St. John's - The Antigua Labour Party has decided not to go the route of primary elections to decide on possible replacement candidates in the 2014 constitutionally due general elections.

Instead, the party has acquired the services of international pollster Bill Johnson, from Jamaica, to conduct polls in all 10 constituencies the ALP lost in 2009. This is slated for sometime within the next two weeks.

General Secretary Mary-Clare Hurst made the announcement on Monday night at a political townhall meeting in St Georges.
She said this decision was taken at the last ALP executive meeting, in an attempt to circumvent the divisive element reflected at the historic November Convention.

The polls will be held within the communities, instead of primary elections solely at the branch level.

“The executive thought that polling would be the best option, and in a democracy, as you are aware, majority rules," Hurst said.

Constituency branches are responsible for selecting candidates, who must make their intentions known formally at that level before their names are tabled before the ALP executive and a determination is made by the party's suitable committee.

" It is not a personal situation or choice,” Hurst said. “It was a decision by the executive. All participating prospects must support whoever emerges as the candidate.”

She noted that the ALP is looking at candidates prepared to tackle issues of crime, education, agriculture, foreign direct investment, and youth development, among other areas. Each candidate must display exemplary creative thinking and be effective.

The general secretary stressed that everyone will not be able to serve as elected members, but consideration remains open for senate seats, ambassadorial posts, and other appointments, should the party be victorious in 2014.

A recent poll conducted by the ALP shows that 30 to 35 percent of voters in the upcoming elections are between the ages of 18 and 35, and the party will be seeking to actively engage this group.

"We want to position ourselves to do one thing and that is to bring home the general elections and make a better life for the people of Antigua and Barbuda," Hurst said.

According to the plan, all candidates would have been selected by the end of March.

Constituencies held by incumbent elected candidates will not be challenged. The person selected through the polling will be the constituency candidate in the 2014 general elections.

Seems like the system you are vociferously defending has a track record of allowing many "DEMONS & MOCKERS" through.

THE SUITABILITY COMMITTEE AND THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE DETERMINE WHO ARE SUITABLE CANDIDATES BEFORE THEY CAN BE ANY PRIMARY. OR POLL,THAT IS THE DICTATE OF THE CONSTITUTION. THE SAME BRUSH CANNOT BE USED FOR ALL. SOME PERSONS WHO APPLY ARE CLEARLY NON STARTERS BUT WILL BE AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY BECAUSE OF THE "DEMON" AND THE "MOCKERY" IN DEMOCRACY.

Man I tell you that you never please Antigua people... if a local pollster is used you all would not trust the outcome and cry foul. Given the sensitivity of the issue they opted to use someone outside for this poll and you all crying foul. When Richards and Associates or the guy Dorsett publishes their poll results you all cry foul. I tell ya...

I am believer in primaries, not polls.Politicia ns have to go out there and do some real work to get elected in the primaries. They have to earn their keep. Most polls usually favor the party stalwart, most known persons. The new person would not stand a chance in the party polling. We need new politicians with new ideas and ideals.

Please assist me understand just how this process works.

In your first paragraph you said that the ALP suitability committee interviews all prospective candidate, has such interviews taken place.

Why not use the result of the poll done by the members of the suitability committee to determine the candidate?

My original question, how would the committee be able to determin the ability of the prospective candidates, whats the yard stick used?

From what i'm told, the Constitution does speak about a primary, but the Party's Executive took a decision before the last convention - while Lester Bird was leader to opt instead for Polls, since Primaries were too divisive and only limited to the base of the Party.

In addition, just before the 2004 elections, primaries saw the manipulation of certain candidates to the detrement of the Party in the said constituencies.

Browne is following through with a decision made by the Party's Executive almost a year ago.

Ms. Hurst: Isn't there a methodology within the Constitution of the ALP as to how candidates should be elected? Is polling part of that methodology?

They will hire Mr. Johnson for a fee, and he will then turn around and solicit local volunteers to help him conduct his poll(s). This project could've been given to one of the professors at Antigua State College, and he/she could've used this as a project for some of the A level students. The project would have been cheaper, and empowering to our people. Why do we always overlook the local talent pool for some foreign/interna tional solutions? And we wonder why the citizens don't have much confidence in their leaders or even want to cooperate in certain matters.

Mary what due diligence do you need to do on Dean? Just ask anyone who has had the displeasure of meeting him when he was the chief advisor to Wilmouth Daniel at APUA. Dean has spoken out against the labor party in such vicious & vindictive ways & now you want to tell me the same party he called corrupt, is the same party he is fighting to become a part of? The people of St George's rejected him twice are you seriously going to let it happen a third time?
Why don't you listen to the people save the money spent on the pollster & listen to us the people WE DON'T WANT DEAN JONAS TO REPRESENT US!

MY DEAR IKEN, THE ANTIGUA LABOUR PARTY HAVE A SUITABILITY COMMITTEE THAT INTERVIEWS ALL PERSPECTIVE CANDIDATES TO MAKE A DETERMINATION. MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE INQUIRE FROM INDIVIDUALS IN THE AREA WHERE THE PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE SEEKS TO REPRESENT; IF THEY WOULD BE AN EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATIVE. THE COMMITTEE LOOKS AT THE ABILITY OF THE PERSPECTIVE CANDIDATE TO MOBILIZE AND TO TACKLE THE PERTINENT ISSUES. WE THEN MAKE A DETERMINATION TO PROCEED.

THIS TIME AROUND THE EXECUTIVE DECIDED TO GO VIA POLLS SINCE IT WAS DECIDED THAT PRIMARIES WERE DIVISIVE AND IN A DEMOCRACY THE MAJORITY RULES WHETHER OR NOT YOU APPROVE.

WE ARE VERY THOROUGH, NOT PERFECT BUT WE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO GIVE THE CONSTITUENCY WHO THEY WANT. WE DID IT WITH TECO, CHET (TO THE POINT WHERE WIGGLEY GEORGE RAN INDEPENDENT) MAX FERNANDEZ, MELFORD NICHOLAS MORE RECENT AND IT GOES ON AND ON.

AS GENERAL SECRETARY, I STAND ON MY RECORD AND HONEST PEOPLE WILL CONCUR. I AM FAIR, YET FIRM AND CANNOT BE MANIPULATED. I FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION AND THE DIRECTION OF THE EXECUTIVE NEVER MIND WHO IT HURSTS.

How would this be done to know if one has such ability, what do you look at their personal accomplishments ?
