Jonas Claims Challenge Discussion Presumptive

Dean JonasAntigua St. john's - Candidate on the Antigua Labour Party ticket for the St. Georges Constituency Dean Jonas is not amused by the public pronouncements made by Senior ALP officials and others about his possible replacement in 2014.

Jonas, who also serves the ALP in the capacity of Public Relations Officer, has further rejected the outcome of a recent poll carried by this newspaper at the beginning of this month between himself, the incumbent Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro (UPP), and his rival within the ALP Michael Freeland. The results of that poll saw Jonas coming in last.

Caribarena spoke with the senior party official on Monday and questioned other public notions of the possibility that he had signaled his interest in contesting alongside former ALP leader Lester Bird in St. John’s Rural East, should the proposed constituency changes come to fruition.

While he did not reject outright the possibility of him taking up the challenge in that area, Jonas said such a change has not yet been made and he could not in any fairness speak to it.

He noted also that until an official stand has been taken, the whole notion of the incumbent government moving to gerrymander the country’s longstanding constituency boundaries to suit its own cause remains mere speculation.

“Nothing official has been done about the whole gerrymandering talk. The whole thing is such a load of nonsense. I don’t know why people are getting excited. (And) I don’t know that the UPP is going to go through with this,” Jonas said.

The ALP St. Georges representative noted also that as far as the Antigua Labour Party was concerned, there are 15 Candidates on the ticket to contest the upcoming election, including himself, with only two constituencies in dispute.

ALP Leader Hon. Gaston Browne has also come out against the public presumptions of who will run where on the party ticket.

Browne has sided with Jonas on this one, noting that matters of replacements and transfers were not one to be discussed in the public domain until properly decided upon by the party executive.

“I don’t see any need for any further discussion on the matter. Clearly, Dean is the incumbent custodian of that area and will continue to be unless if when we poll there is information to suggest that he can’t run. So, unless we have information otherwise, then he remains” Browne said in an attempt to put the matter to rest.

An official comment on the matter is likely to come from the ALP in due course.

#12 Reality Check » 2013-02-16 07:10

Dean need to learn interpersonal skills if he is going to represent his constituents, we are tired of politician who are too aloof to listen to our less than college level discourse. He may be intelligent but Is he compassionate? I htink anyone can beat Jacqui now, she has proven her lack of concern and down right incompetence over the years.

He is in this to win an Election & I expect him as leader of the party to make sure the wishes of the voters in St. George that will vote either for against the candidates will be heard and granted. St. George

@ Young Freeland

#4 CommonSense » 2013-02-12 14:35

Freeland has no bite in this constituency. His father blew the goodwill by leaving the ALP with a lot of bitterness for LB. But young Freeland brings nothing to the table by way of understanding the needs of the constituency or by way of meeting those needs. Now Dean isn't the best at interpersonal relationships but he is a damn good worker. He knows the people of St. Georges and is in touch with their feelings, hurts and needs. Name one thing that young Freeland ever did for St. Georges except that this father ran there years ago? Not one thing he did, not one thing... He can't bean Jacqui not he... Dean could

One vote, No Seat; Multiple votes, MP

#2 jt » 2013-02-12 12:06

It would seem that Mr. Jonas has time on his hands to give interviews on his own behalf but can never find the time to act in his capacity as PRO for the party. Where does this sense of entitlement come from?? As the writer before stated, he is just a caretaker. Gaston should commission polls in all the constituencies that have caretakers. Reality over sentimentally. The reality is that labour needs to win the election and whether or not caretakers brought their delegate votes to the convention is irrelevant now. Your 20 votes can't win the seat. We need winners on the ticket for 2014. So if some of the "incumbent caretakers" got to go, FALL IN LINE.

Clarify nothing - thin skin

#1 me » 2013-02-12 08:19

Dean is not a representative - Just a point of clarification. He is a Caretaker. In my view, the people of St. Georges will speak when the polling is done and then the ABLP will d whay it needs to do.
