UPP Poised to Welcome Three New Candidates

Antigua St. john's - The United Progressive Party (UPP) is considering at least three new candidates to fill constituency vacancies before the 2014 constitutionally due general elections in Antigua and Barbuda.

UPP Spokesperson and Senator Joanne Massiah, declined to reveal details as to who these individuals are.

Speaking with Caribarena on Monday, Massiah confirmed that the party was seeking to fill slots made available in St. John’s City South, St. Mary’s North and one other constituency.

Caribarena sought clarification on at least three names including Winston Henry and Mervyn Richards, both of whom have reportedly made their intentions to contest on the UPP ticket public knowledge.

But the Senator refused to make any official pronouncements on the matter until due diligence is completed.

“Certain processes are still ongoing, so I can’t really speak to who the new candidates are at this time,” Massiah said.

She added however that their identities could be made known before the March 16-17 UPP Convention if the necessary processes are completed hassle-free.

“We know a couple of things. We know that Lenworth Jonson has indicated that he would not run again so there is a vacancy there. And two others have also withdrawn, so there are at least three constituencies in which there are known vacancies” Massiah said.

The Senator noted that as soon as “things are a little more firm” in terms of the candidates, the public will be informed.

The UPP Convention is set to take place in a month’s time and it is not expected to be as eventful as that of the Antigua Labour Party Convention in November 2012.
