You are indeed a young analyst. Sean is a Bird but he did not win in rural south. Michael Freeland is being polled because he has indicated his interest to run in St. Georges by writing to the ALP exec.

To Over Taxed

#82 the Man » 2013-01-31 21:29

you touch upon something very important. PEOPLE, WE DO NOT NEED 17 MEMBERS. This is terrible waste, not only from the point of view of salaries, but from the fact that nothing ever gets done here. Let me give you some examples to illustrate just how crazy us antiguans and barbudans are.

The United Kingdom, on which our Government style is based, has a Parliament with 650 members of parliament, and the Cabinet has 23 ministers (including the prime minister). Now, according to the world bank, in 2011 the population of the UK was 62.6 million. Work out the math, and there's a member of parliament for every 96,000 people. I'd hate to try and repeat the same math here in Antigua.

Now, here's another funny example. In Canada, there is a town called St. John's with a population of 106,172 and a size of 172.2 square miles, so this city is slightly larger than Antigua. It has a Mayor, a deputy, and 9 Councillors. There are no political parties. And believe me, those 12 deal with a lot more trouble than little Antigua. Furthermore, Antigua is not so geographically or economically segregated that it should require 17 constituencies. We're just crazy, and we love it.

Sorry, This is just how i see it.How else can you describe someone who almost drowned because he/she ventured into too deep waters, survive that ordeal, and jump right back in? There is only one word to describe that person" Foolish" As to the entire UPP clan, to describe them in one word, dont know about they personal acheivements,an d dont care, but as a Govt the word is F-A-I-L-E-D.Giv e me one productive reason why any sane intelligent working class person would vote for the UPP again. If you can give me a decent reason,i will apologize,if you cant then my comment is justified.

#80 Over Taxed » 2013-01-31 20:40

With less than 100,000 people, can you explain to us why we need 17 representatives ? It just means more wastage of tax payer's money and more salaries for life for the possibly 60,000 people who are over taxed already. Until you find politicians who can lower my taxes by getting rid of half of these over paid freeloaders, there really is little point to these polls, real and pretend.

#77 loyalist » 2013-01-31 18:45

This poll should be a lesson for Dean. Dont be a xxxxxr. Stick to your principles if you have any. Looks like Gaston Brown has some decisions to make on your candidacy. For me, I am a Jackie Quinn supporter, not a UPP supporter. I am not happy with the way her party has done some things, but I am staunchly behind her. Next time Michael. 2014 goes to her again. My family wishes and prays for her speedy recovery. God bless!

Down with Dean Jonas. No person with the mind frame of Dean should be allowed to run on the ALP ticket. Dean Jonas is the wxxx xxxx to the ALP I know. How soon we forgive and forget. To actually have him as a bosom buddy with Gaston Browne says a lot to Mr. Brown's mental state and his ability to pick suitable people for his cabinet and ticket. Lets not forget Dean's role once the UPP took over in 2004. Good Luck Mr. Freeland you are MY choice for St. George.

I think the younger people in antigua lack brain power, moreso than the older ones.Just look at the nonsense they can write, why they would support a candidate. So because a woman makes history, she becomes a great candidate for a politician, what has she done not just for her constituencies, but has she really contributed anything positive to her govt, as Min of education, has she stood up to the wrongs her govt is doing as a woman and a Mother. She is part of a failing govt, and no matter how charming you may find her,she goes down with the rest miss Nellie.

fellow people

#56 the Man » 2013-01-31 13:46

Dear fellow people,

I have a question for you. Antigua is 108 square miles. We have roughly 100,000 people total. I'm not sure about how many are eligible to vote, but let's just say a fair 60,000. We are hardly the size of a small town. Do you honestly believe that the national view is that different from a particular constituency? We are not the US or Europe, St. George to St. John's is not like California to New york. If a national poll with a fair sample size shows a leaning to a particular party, that party has a higher chance of winning in any given constituency, not including the major strongholds. Moreover, from what I have seen, we are a people of party, not person. We do not vote for "Leandro" or "Jonas", we vote "UPP" or "ALP". So, say what you will, these "non-scientific " polls you frown on so vehemently have more truth in them than you'd care to admit. I will say this though, the UPP have not yet started campaigning, and once they do, the battlefield may begin to change.

You're wrong Tenman

#55 Teacher Mildred » 2013-01-31 13:34

Tenman: I am neither UPP or ALP. I am just calling a spade a spade. Who in their right mind would see this as a true reflection of the current position in St. Georges? How did Michael Freeland's name end up on the ballot? It is obvious that this is an exercise to feel the pulse of the people but the methodology is flawed and as is obvious, the results are misleading. I don't give a hoot about any of the two parties at the moment because they both have major weaknesses. I cannot even speak of the lesser of the evils because no one knows how the ALP and its new leader will perform. However, in my opinion, he has already made a major mistake by having close to his chest, some people who have heavy suitcases. Hope the baggage doesn't weigh him down. He ought to know by now that he who pays the piper calls the tune. I know he has some huge gonads (figuratively speaking), but it is left to be seen if those gonads produce enough testosterone that will make him act like a true leader when the time comes.

Teacher Mildred don't you notice that consistency the UPP candidates keep getting in the low 30th percentile when you subtract the overseas votes? This has not only happened with the caribarena polls but also the FFEL poll. Why are UPP members turned off from participating in polls? If you feel suspicious of the promoters of the poll, why not do your own on the UPP website and via SMS text? Is it that they are afraid of the results?

Even if one wished to acknowledge the results of the last 2 polls, the results so far today expose the fundamental flaw in this exercise. There is absolutely no way that a true poll in this constituency would provide the result we are seeing. The exercise should therefore be seen for what it is - an attempt to bolster the confidence of certain candidates or more likely, comic relief.

While I agree with you onsome facets of Jacqui's peronality, I personally feel she has failed to represent the people who put her there in the first place and has let down the women across this country.

Might I add, she is very arrogant, haughty and at times comes across as not very genuine, since her rise to power and fame! :-x

History or not, she needs to be humbled by a defeat and that she wil get in 2014!

What has Jacqui done for us in St. George's? Like the Government she has gotten complacent . So I am supporting change. Go young Freeland. Show you greatness.

I voting for Jackie Quinn. she has proven herself she can mix with us young people and still represent we anywhere in the world. she smart she bright. she beautiful. Freeland father disappoint us many years. Dean is a liar and a xlxxf. Jackie has dignity and grace. besides she is going to be our next prime minister. just praying for her health now.

com ashore on the blogs. I am still waiting for answers from yesterday but got nothing from Samantha and Brother B so I would like to know the position statement from Jacqui, Dean and Michael today on the government paying back the $500 million owed to Social Security, WPP, unemployment and high taxes. So if you see them please send this message to them. No one should be voting unless we get answers on what these aspiring politicians plan to do with our sacred votes.

I have studied the rise of this young lady since her days as a news anchor and talk show host. this woman has a cool confidence, charm, intelligence and genuineness about her. she has become the first woman to create history and I personally think she is headed for greatness. she gets my vote for the third time: 2004, 2009 & 2014

#16 PLEASE » 2013-01-31 09:18

LOL... Its amazing that people actually see this pool as a true representation of election results. We know that people from all over Antigua will vote and not just persons who reside in the said constituency. In addition this seems to be a favourite for Laborites so thats and added bias. I do not support any party and still waiting for an independent unbiased source for facts and not foolishness.

The winner. Mr. Freeland was born in that area. His naval string buried in Potters Village. He is a true son of the soil. Dean is not fresh blood red on the outside but bleeds blue. The Freeland family is strong on traditional values so he is expected to be of good character. Old papa Freeland was one of those ALP heroes fighting for our freedom pre our time. I don’t know where he stands on the issues but the people in St. George constituency will accept him. They want fresh and different.

#8 St George » 2013-01-31 08:43

For all concerned Michael Freeland is the son of Sir Adolphus Freeland who held the St George seat for many years.
Micheal is well respected and is a peoples person who will listen to all and get the job done. He will be there for all the people not some of the people.
With Micheal ALP is sure to win this seat.
