Poll results - St John’s Rural North

Poll results - St John’s Rural NorthAntigua St. John's - Following the announcement that Caribarena was conducting polls that would put ALP, UPP, and independent candidates head to head in their Constituencies, some of our visitors expressed concerns about the accuracy and legitimacy of our polls.

One of these concerns was foreign influence. Caribarena’s polling technology allows us to see where a voter in the poll comes from, and thus, separate voters via region or country.

Charles “Max” Fernandez (ALP)
Total Votes: 361
Votes from Antigua and Barbuda: 294
Votes from Overseas: 67
Percentage of Local Votes: 81.5%
Percentage of Overseas Votes: 18.5%

The ALP’s Charles “Max” Fernandez received the highest amount of votes with 361, 294 of which came from Antigua and Barbuda. 18.5% of Fernandez’s support came from foreign countries.

John Maginley (UPP, Incumbent)
Total Votes: 304
Votes from Antigua and Barbuda: 213
Votes from Overseas: 91
Percentage of Local Votes: 70.1%
Percentage of Overseas Votes: 29.9%

The UPP’s John Maginley, who is the incumbent in the poll, received a total of 304 votes, with 213 votes from Antigua and Barbuda. 29.9% of Maginley’s votes came from foreign countries.

Sean Bird (ALP)
Total Votes: 161
Votes from Antigua and Barbuda: 112
Votes from Overseas: 49
Percentage of Local Votes: 69.6%
Percentage of Overseas Votes: 30.4%

The other ALP Candidate Sean Bird, who is contesting Fernandez for representation in the area, received 161votes, with 112coming from Antigua and Barbuda. 30.4% of his votes came from foreign countries.

None of the Above
Total Votes: 52
Votes from Antigua and Barbuda: 23
Votes from Overseas: 29
Percentage of Local Votes: 44.2%
Percentage of Overseas Votes: 55.8%

The “none of the above” option received 52 votes, with 23 coming from Antigua and Barbuda. 55.8% of these votes came from foreign countries.

Total votes on this poll 878, 642 votes came from Antigua and Barbuda. In the final results, ALP Candidate Charles “Max” Fernandez led the incumbent UPP’s John Maginley by 81 votes, or 12.6%, amongst Antiguan and Barbudan voters.

The Candidate with the most local support was Charles “Max” Fernandez, with 81.5% of his votes coming from Antigua and Barbuda.

Maginley followed him, with 70.1% of Maginley’s votes coming from Antigua and Barbuda.

Sean Bird was a very close third, with 69.6% of his votes coming from Antigua and Barbuda.

In the 2009 election, Maginley beat Fernandez by 5.1%. While the Caribarena poll did not rely only on votes from the St. John’s Rural North constituency, and cannot predict what will happen in the future election, the poll does show a general downturn of favorability with Incumbent John Maginley.

Bird received significantly less votes than the other two contenders, but as a newcomer to the political arena, Bird’s performance appears strong.

Note to our Readers
Our systems cross-reference data between Public IP Databases, Google Reporting Platform, and our own Polling System’s Protection Layer. Known automatic spam systems are automatically blocked, and users with fake IP Addresses are flagged and highlighted for further monitoring by our teams.

Our systems did detect attempts by visitors to use forged IP addresses in order to double-vote. These attempts were blocked, and those users were prohibited from voting more than once.

The Independent , if we agree this is more a national poll than a constituency poll, based on results of another recent national poll(FFEL), you will most likely win that bet

#24 The Independent » 2013-01-30 16:27

My bet is that every ALP candidate will come out ahead of the UPP candidate at the end of the Caribarena poll. I say this, not on the basis of any special knowledge I might have about political climate in Antigua and Barbuda - no more than anyone else - but simply because it is what I would expect from a poll such as this. Any bets?

This poll shows nothing. Anyone with a cell phone (or two or six) could have voted in this. What a waste of people's time and money. :zzz

The Independent, thanks (enjoy learning). Note though we have probably had 8 elections in the forty year span, since then, showing them reflecting the national trend. You don't think that latter information reveals that the 1971 difference was simply an aberration?

Tenman,
Denfied Hurst won the Rural North seat in 1971, although ALP lost the election. I offer this for your information only and not as evidence of a likely outcome in the next election. More of a history lesson, if you like. Any by the way, I am no a UPP - or ALP -supporter.

you read to fast. Try again:

Quote:
While the Caribarena poll did not rely only on votes from the St. John’s Rural North constituency, and cannot predict what will happen in the future election, the poll does show a general downturn of favorability with Incumbent John Maginley.
They even recognized it does not rely on votes from St. John's rural north, and that the poll shows a GENERAL downturn of favorability.

you said:
Quote:
But to make a conclusion about John Maginley's popularity in Rural North on the basis of these online poll results is simply not sound reasoning.
I say you only see what you want to see and hear what you want to hear. You can say that this poll means nothing, but the fact of the matter is that 600 Antiguans and Barbudans from around the island voted yesterday in a poll, and most of them voted Fernandez and not Maginley. Moreover, even Cool Ruler and his trickster friends could not turn the tide, despite the fact that Maginley got 11% more support from outside the Island.

This poll isn't everything, but it also isn't nothing.

Independent I agree with you that no one can really say that the results of the poll truly reflect attitudes on the ground in Rural North. The only good argument may be, if true, that Rural North tends to reflect the national results. I don't recall a Rural north MP ever being an opposition member. Whats telling in the poll is John's figure 34% are inline with the results of the Free and Fair election national poll for the UPP 31%.. The 3% difference can be explained by John's 3% more votes from overseas than Fernandez. Persons supportive of the UPP can continue ignoring these recurring numbers (from two separate non scientific polls) at their peril

#15 ANTIGUAN WOMAN » 2013-01-30 12:45

Polls reflect the mind of " People"not of Domestic Animals, are these not the same persons who can vote in an actual election? Or is it that the people who vote is saying, they will vote for Fernadez over Maginley if they lived in Rural north, but will vote for the UPP candidate in their respective constituency?? it can definitely be a reflection of how the nation on a whole is feeling at present.Conside ring the fact that all the votes for Maginley was not from Rural north either, the general consensus is that the UPP is not the favored party.

Little Johnny, if the writer of the article was comparing total UPP votes in the last election with the poll results and and making a conclusion about UPP's popularity, then there might some - albeit not very much much - merit in the conclusion. But to make a conclusion about John Maginley's popularity in Rural North on the basis of these online poll results is simply not sound reasoning. Please note that I do not support UPP or John Maginley, but simply have a problem with this kind of "deceptive reasoning".

This shows that the UPP is very unpopular. Add to that a disappointment as a Representative and a Minister, and you have a losing seat for the UPP.

"the poll does show a general downturn of favorability with Incumbent John Maginley"

To compare the results from and online poll - where anyone from any constituency can vote any number of times - with the results from a General Election, where voting is limited to registered voters in a particular constituency, is a bit like comparing apples and macaroni pie.
The above conclusion says more about the persons involved in this poll than it says about the results.

Cool Ruler; I suspected you voted 3 times given the details you submitted below. However, like some of us over here in NY from St John’s Rural North we were able to vote because we could not resist the temptation of trying out the cool Absentee Voting being offered by the smart capable team at Caribarena. We are hoping also that the government will take heed and recognize the growing interest we have for Antigua and will update their technology to allow credible online or mail-in Absentee Ballot. This poll may be slightly rigged because of poor IP technology but close enough (+ or -) for the candidates to pay attention and start delivering the goods to the people.

I did not take part in this charade and have no intentions of doing so what, however are you guys saying that someone like myself who uses at times three ip address all genuine none fake to visit your site in a day could not have voted using different monitors? How would your so-called smart technology catch that? In the morning on my way to work on the train, I may use my phone or tablet, later I may even log on from work and later sill log on from home on my computer, all using different ip address. Your explanation to reassure persons of the fail safe methods does not pass muster.

This poll has absolutely no credibility and cannot be taken as an accurate indication of the minds of the people. Even the way the numbers (results) are presented is grossly misleading.
