Yearwood Slams Re-registration- Boundary Changes

Yearwood Slams Re-registrationAntigua St. John's - Opposition parliamentarian Robin Yearwood has said "no" to plans for a complete re-registration of voters and adjustments of constituency boundaries.

The St. Phillip's North representative said the re-registration would cost too much money, and he chastised politicians who have failed to properly scrutinize the list of electors.

"We politicians don't check on these things until two or three weeks before elections," he said, "We have people in the registration booths, both parties, and you're going to tell me that we can't check that?"

"The cost of doing re-registration could be $50,000 … it's $50,000 that could be spent on something else," Yearwood said.

Both the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) and the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) have been mobilizing their support base, though the ALP have accused the UPP of gerrymandering and has threatened legal action.

Initial reports were that St. John's Rural East, St. Phillip's North and St. Mary's North - all represented by ALP members including Political Leader Lester Bird - are among those that would be affected.

The Boundaries Commission is scrutinizing the recommendations.

Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has said that the changes aim to correct disproportionate constituencies and are in line with recommendations of regional observers who have monitored general elections here.

In response Yearwood said: "We can't do that. Are we going to equalize Barbuda too?"

I BEG TO DIFFER- IN NEED OF REREGISTRATION

You can't put a price on democracy and its clear that for the most Politicians and Political parties would prefer to continue having Antigua & Barbuda people left uneducated and unenlightened about our rights and empower us to keep them all in check and accountable...

In addition to reregistration there needs to be a law that allows registered voters who take part in an election period to be able to sign a petition with 51% of everyone who voted at the last election, that would be legally binding in a court of law and force government and officials alike to do the will of the people... so we as a people can stop feel as if we begging or have our hands tied when the government or a prime minister feel he or she can do what they want to the people or with the people tax money...

Also come next election the voter ID cards should not be plastic, they should be just like a event ticket, numbered and sequenced to facilitate disputes or initiate citizen actions as suggested before so that voters can have a way of saying that they voted last election and the electoral administrators can also account for votes.

I BEG TO DIFFER- IN NEED OF REREGISTRATION

Voter Reregistration and Education most definitely needs to be done before 2014 and in my opinion for the most completely done for everyone by around September 2013 (so a good six months of debates and exchanges can be had for the citizens of our country to elect the next government - ( not no UPP or ALP or any kinda party government, but a united PEOPLE government )

More so the eligibility for voting needs to become citizens only.. very plain and simple eliminate the time wasted in verifying how long someone here for or whether they live overseas etc, Once you a Antigua & Barbuda citizen born or naturalized you can vote!!! Also Every reregistered voter, should be given a copy of the Constitution, and a booklet on how our Westminter System works and the respective roles and rights for citizens and politicians alike.

The boundaries also needs to be changed not for more but for less - from 17 to at least 8 (based of Parishes and one for the people to choose who will be Prime Minister) so we can bring an end to existing opposition grand standing nonesense in Parliament...

I agree with MP Yearwood, the re-registration thing seems like a wasted exercise. The MP used the example of the drivers license, how its simply renewed with the owner going in and updating whatever information and paying whatever required fees. I have also heard Sir Gerald Watt in agreement with MP Yearwood that there is no reason in law for a re-registration . I heard the host suggest a good reason for this is according to him, Barbuda has some 1300 registered voters but have only have about half of this usually living there. Ignored is that many Barbudans live elsewhere. Isn't it this current government that has argued that non resident citizens can be on the voters rolls once they show residency in the constituency for at least a month (while locals have a 6 month residence requirement)?
