Samantha Marshall For St. Marys South

Samantha Marshall For St. Marys SouthAntigua St John's - Casworth Aaron, Chairman of the St. Marys South Constituency branch of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) has said that the body stands firm in its decision to allow Samantha Marshall to represent its interests in the next general elections and has communicated its position to the ALP Executive.

Aaron’s comments come in response to media reports that Pascal Williams, who has also expressed interest in representing the party in that constituency, has reached out to Marshall requesting a meeting on the way forward.

“I, as Chairman of the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party (ALP) St. Marys South Constituency Branch, have been in touch with Ms. Marshall who is abroad, to establish the accuracy of that news broadcast and she has denied any such intention,” Aaron said.

He added that Ms. Marshall , who was the ALP candidate in the last general elections, “has no need” to meet with Mr. Williams, and that the branch has duly notified the party’s executive of their choice of candidate for the upcoming election.

“(Ms. Marshall) recognizes that despite the fact he (Pascal Williams) has resided in Canada for upwards of forty (40) years, he has all rights as every qualified Antiguan to seek high office,” he said. “This matter as far as we are concerned is settled and we are busy campaigning to win this seat for the ALP at the next election.”

One of the requirements to run for political office is, at a bare minimum, that the candidate be a member of the political party in question before being nominated by the constituency branch to contest the post. Mr. Aaron asserted that Williams is not in fact a member of the ALP.

Attempts to reach Pascal Williams were unsuccessful.

According to ALP General Secretary Mary-Clare Hurst, Williams is approaching the situation in the wrong way. She acknowledged receipt of a letter from Mr. Williams indicating his interest in contesting the branch seat.

But Hurst says: “Mr. Williams cannot write directly to me. He is going about it the wrong way. He has to write to the secretary of the branch and that letter would then be forwarded to me and I will read it on the correspondence to the executive and a response would be sent.”

So although Hurst has the letter, she has no power to act on it because it should have come through the “active”  St. Marys South constituency branch.

After this channel is followed, the ALP executive would have sought to determine the suitability of the proposed candidate through a series of assessments that include financial standing, duration of membership in the ALP.

“I am just hearing rhetoric and that is not going to help him. There is a time factor. You have to be a member of the organization. You have to be in good financial standing for at least a month,” Hurst said.

The ALP General Secretary suggested that Mr. Williams get a copy of the constitution and understand the procedures.

She said Williams must stop his “aimless” approach and follow the procedures. If he feels failed by the branch then he could seek an audience with the executive, but that failure cannot be determined without following the right procedures.

#14 Daughter of Klaas » 2012-07-14 11:57

Saints preserve us! Especially Mr/Ms "United States", be advised.... no, be AWARE that Samantha's "look" in the photo reflects her true ethnicity - an unadulterated daughter of the soil, a daughter of Klaas, a daughter of class! Mr/Ms United States, just stay where you are among your hybrids and bleached blonds. Black people, of all people, by now should have learned that integrity, intelligence, dedication, decency, capacity and potential are NOT measured by false notions of outward appearance. Do NOT be distracted, Ms. Marshall.

Fellow Bloggers why are some of the comments based on Ms Marshall's picture? It was caribarena who post the picture on the article and i wonder how many of you took the time out to read the article? The article speaks about due process for a person who has interest in entering into the political race a political party's ticket. The party branch plays a pivotal role when choosing a candidate to represent the party in an election. The ALP party branch in St Mary's South has voiced their satisfaction with the present candidate and it should'nt go un-notice. I know when it comes to the subject of politics, we should agree to disagree but some of these comments are just immature and childish. Smh.........

#12 my way of helping » 2012-07-13 19:30

some one see the hurt of the people, i don't know this william, but this is how you talk to someone who wants to be apart of your team, a member?

ALP dissapoints me, yes, there are procedures but is it logical to make a person who lost, re enter without careful consideration of others? I practice law but sometimes i think for justice, for peace, for and from the spirit of the law people should sometimes ignore procedure, so that justice may win.

I do not support political parties but the best interest of the people. Miss Samantha Marshall, you were caught in a moment of time, which shows the intensity of your thoughts. They must have been very serious. YOU HAVE THE FACE OF AN ALKEBULAN/AFRIC AN WARRIOR QUEEN. I prefer that anytime vs 'a smiling face' in front of me with demonic thoughts of robbing, **king me over, lying with a smile on their face and a dagger hidden in their hand. JUST BE FOR AND ABOUT YOUR PEOPLES POSITIVE UPLIFTMENT AND ENLIGHTMENT.

Please give me one good reason. Why anyone in their right mind would vote for that person Marshall. Her demeanor would surely chased me away if she was running for pubic office in my State. As a politician you are supposed to be approachable,ni ce and be people friendly.Poor Antigua and Antiguans if these are the breed of people you wish for, to run the country of my birth.Perhaps caribarena should print a better picture of her.Do her some justice.Iam not picking on her gender. It does not matter if the picture was of a male/female.I woud said the same darn thing.

I am a member of that constituency and i have never heard of, never seen that individual pascal williams. I cannot even confirm his existence. I was made to understand that he was complaining that the constituency needs someone who is available on a regular basis and i would like for him to understand that Samantha has been there and done that. Although she might not be visible in the constituency on a 24 hours basis a quick call to her law firm or cell phone would guarantee you timely attention. I would like to know why did he waited until less than two years before the elections to indicate his intentions to contest this constituency? where was he since 2009 when Ms Marshall lost to the present representative? What has he done to convince us that he will be a better representative and the list goes on and on. I am warning all those pretenders out there who are trying to take the electorate for a ride to just think before they act because we are very curious of who represents us. Leave the Marshall alone for you guys will be found wanted x or x.
