Lovell Confronts Lone Wolf Protesters

Lovell Confronts Lone Wolf ProtestersAntigua St John's - Lone wolf protesters took to the streets again this week but diverted from their usual march spot outside the Chinese Embassy and instead converged at the office of Finance and the Economy Minister Harold Lovell.

But unlike other picket locations this one saw an almost immediate reaction from the Minister who confronted the group on at least two occasions shouting criticism in their direction and demanding that they leave the premises.

The Minister's strong reaction was prompted by inappropriate comments and language on the part of the Lone Wolf Group.

Vere Bird III, spokesman for the group, said the gathering was in keeping with the Finance Minister’s announcement of a cabinet sub-committee involving him, Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro and Dr. Errol Cort.

The sub-committee was set up to investigate whether there are sufficient grounds to follow through with an independent investigation into the Wadadli Power Plant (WPP) as requested by chairman of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP), Gaston Browne.

According to Bird, the group’s intention is to grill the Minister on how he intends to sit on a sub committee to determine the grounds for an investigation of a deal that he himself signed off on.

“This is the Minister of Finance and he is dealing with our money and honoring this (WPP) loan that has not been authorized by the parliament for the people. They talk about setting up some sub committee in order to investigate the power plant deal after all these months when they were saying everything was fine,” Bird said.

He added that the United Progressive Party (UPP) government is trying to “baffle” the brains of the populace, and the lone wolves will not sit idly by and allow them to get away with it.

“He is honoring the loan and he is going to be on a tribunal to investigate whether the loan was above board. It does not make any sense,” Bird said.

Instead of congregating 100 feet away from a public building as prescribed by law, the lone wolves gathered immediately outside the entrance to the finance ministry, in the parking area. Police officials on scene tried without success to put a stop to the picket that lasted just over one hour

Attempts to reach the finance minister for a comment on the matter were unsuccessful.

Carib Arena appears to be another ALP playing ground for bird brainers. I would not give a second thought to any of the dialogue. Mr. Lovell is an honorable man, a leader with a heart who may at times come across as not decisive enough because he not only rules with his head he rules with his heart. Keep up the good works Mr. Lovell. You are a soldier, never let them see you sweat.

Jaimon -- Do you really want a reference to who robed “the tax payers of this country blind - With public project monies going into the pockets of those in power”? Check out the details of the IHI rip-off and don’t forget to also get the details of the APUP FUNDING scheme. They are all the handy works of the ALP. That is where the money gone!!

The UPP administration has exercised such wonderful control while dealing with the vicious power crazy ALP opposition who seem to believe that Antigua belongs to the Birds. For those of us who can remember the many times that “Old Man Bird” used tear gas on any group who dared to oppose him. There are hundreds of occasions during the past 50 years of the Bird domination of this country. It might we advisable for the younger forks to do some research – this would give you an insight of what the Labour party would do if they were ever returned to power- beware!!

Skywell, if you are suggesting that either Erol Cort, Harold Lovell or Jacqui Quinn-Leandro could be a future Prime Minister of this country, then heaven help us. I know God never gives anyone more than they can take and if we can't take them in their current positions; Prime Minister?????? No way! Anyway, the behavior of Mr. Lovell is certainly not that of a future Prime Minister.

My dear son, I admire your courage and tenacity in standing up for the interests of our country and our people including those shameless ones who would rather join forces with the traitors and their alien co-conspirators . Several generations ago, the father of the nation, our national hero, your grandfather faced similar challenges and was fearless. Clearly HIS blood runs in your veins. One word to the wise, however. Be circumspect in all your doings since many of us see in you a future(sooner than later) Prime Minister of this our beloved country.

To imply that Citizens should be tear gased when they are standing up for their rights, tells me sevaral things.
1. You would like to see the physical enslavement of people of Alkebulan/Afric an decent all over again. This is not the Mediterrian under Islamic/Arab dictatorship, even though they have great influence over our present leaders. Our foreparents died already, and many of us are prepared to do so all over again.
2. You are a coward to suggest such actions when this type of action was never used onthe UPP supporters when they were in the opposition. The UPP appears like they want to hold on to power, by any means necessary.
3. You probally don't live in Antigua or Barbuda...

Young Analyst, I will have to agree with you on that one! The Chief Loyal Supporter should just continue to read the "National Enquire" for the "juicy" gossip he likes, on his "high rise" balcony in the US, as he has nothing to worry about (life is good for him)! For a man who have so much "loyalty" for this government, and has a banking background, the Chief should come back home and help this government, in doing what's "right!" Afterall, he promised not to return under the likes of the ALP. Guess he is waiting for Leopard to come home, before he really step a foot back here!

#21 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2012-07-11 16:03

The ever reliable TENMAN.
Law enforcement officers do not necessarily have to rely upon the "PUBLIC ORDER ACT" in determining "...Distances" for the maintenance of order.

There is a duty to "...Prevent Breaches of the Peace," thus there are powers under Section 23 of the Police Act, Chapter 330 as well as powers exercisable at "...Common Law."

Distancess may be determined for "...effective crowd control." It matters not whether the Picketing was "...lawful orunlawful," if "...Public Order or Public Safety was threatened, apprehended or likely to be occasioned, Law enforement was duty-bound to initiate "...appropriate action" in eliminating any such threat or occasion.

The Act speaks to 100 yards the officer at the picket yesterday told us to stand 100 feet away from the building which is what I was referring to. The office has the discretion to tell participants at meetings and marches to remove to 10, 20, 50 100 feet or yards from the designated area(it is the officers discretion to determine how far away is needed to preserve the peace.

The Lone Wolf group are only replicating what the UPP did as an Opposition. We seem to forget when past ALP Ministers were blocked from entering their offices or were forced out of them period. Harold and Dr. Dr. are only getting a piece of their own "strong arm" tactics.

Vere C. Bird III, the public order act speaks of 100 yards NOT 100 feet. Section 22:
Quote:
"specified distance" means the radius of one hundred yards from any point within the curtilage of any scheduled premises.
Yes you are correct it has nothing to do with pickets.

First you have the PM calling the people "criminals" and "mercenaries!" Now, we have the Finance Minister and "possible(???)"
Future PM of this country telling the people to go to "hell" for trying to get "answers" why he is sitting on the Subcommittee to investigate "himself?" Obviously, this is not a "conflict of interest" to Lovell, since he himself have turned a "blind-eye" to any "corrupt" practices by his government! He has allowed the investigation of the "Fencing" scandal to "sweep under the rug," and given the Senator a "slap on the wrist!" Lovell, for your reactions to the Lone Wolf, you should be "ashamed" for the "language" you used and even trying to violate the Group's right to picket!

Although itwould have been better to get more independent individuals, it is within protocol for them to look into this internally, They have 14 days to report, so let them report. It is impossible to know the future. who knows, one of potential future PMs my love country over party. In order for the plant to be returned because it is defective, old or new, if it does not work it have got to go. The government must be sure. For some this could be a career changer.

#11 Vere C. Bird III » 2012-07-11 07:45

100 feet is not prescribed by law for pickets only for marches and meetings. Read Public Order Act section 22 and 23 and the Second Sechedule.

#10 tenman » 2012-07-11 07:25

MP Lovell lives by the notion that the world is a stage. Always ready to smile for the camera. As far as the 100 yards (not feet) criteria goes, it does not apply to pickets. As far as permission for this picket, this is not a requirement of the public order act (see section 22 2a). Section 25 also makes it clear that the distance requirement (at least 100 yards) will only apply to a march or meeting (not picket) when there is an order by the police for it to disperse

#9 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-07-11 07:22

Get up, stand up, stand firn, stand steadfast for equal rights and justice. We only want peace when the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently abandoned. Harold Lovell who began his political career in the same fashion(the Antigua Grammar School Protest March of the 1970's), the ACLM led protests etc seems to have forgotten what and who gave him his confidence, status and power
He needs to STOP THE H(IPOCRACY or is he a "wolf in sheep clothing," saying, "do as I say, not as I do." We are doomed, if that's the caseed

How on earth could “Police officials on scene” try “without success to put a stop to the picket” when it was an illegal picket? Where is the police commissioner; the minister of justice; the AG; the PM? If the UPP and the police are helpless against unarmed illiterate ALP yard fowls, why would we have any confidence that they will be able to protect us from the foreign gunmen running riot all over Antigua?

Horrible Harold Strikes Again

#5 Miss Taken » 2012-07-11 06:41

I cannot believe that a person with Harold's position would allow the LW to drag him down in this manner. I heard the expletive & couldn't believe what I heard. Come on Harold you can do much better than that.
I however want to thank Vere Bird III, for taking the fight directly to the politicians & people who commit the ills on our society. How can we expect to sit by waiting for Harold to call himself a failure & to say without a doubt he is an idiot for not reading the contract fully before signing for old, over used, delapilated, engines. This will never happen if Harold is judge, jury, & executioner. Keep up the great job Lone Wolf enquiring minds NEED answers.

Oh Harold, Why Harold are you contunually protecting the wrong doers in your UPP Government. You know I had your back over the years in City East, and I supported you as a future Prime Minister, BUT you have not moved to purge the party of it's corrupt and dangerous elements! I believed in you when you came to my home and said that your government stands for transparency and accountability, and I voted for you twice! But now, you cannot imagine my level of dissapointment in the performance of my Government after passing such great laws on integrity and anti-corruption ! Oh Harold it appears the more things change the more they remain the same. But truthfully, UPP has turned out to be far worse than the ALP! I am sorry but I will never vote for UPP again!

#3 Jaimon » 2012-07-11 06:12

When backed into a corner for answers about the obviously corrupt Unbelievable Power Plant (UPP) rip off, Minister Lovell, Guardian of the Nation's finance tells citizens peacefully asking questions, to F*** OFF! The nasty languge from the Minister did not end there. He then engaged in an argument with one of the protesters about who love B**** more! An obvious reference to a certain law passed by the UPP administration apparently legalising a certain lifestyle. This is the kind of low down political games that the UPP mal administration is playing in an attempt to hold on to power and rob the tax payers ofthis country blind. With public project monies going into the pockets of those in power, it is little wonder that Antigua has the worst performing economy in the OECS states! May God Help us!
