Spencer Addresses Tamo’s Absence

Spencer Addresses Tamo’s AbsenceAntigua St. John’s - Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has broken his silence on the extended absence from the country of government Senator Elmore “Tamo” Charles, by telling the country that the matter would be resolved by the end of the month.

In an Observer Radio interview, Spencer said Charles, whose absence has extended to more than a year, has been in contact with the relevant authorities, notably the President of the Senate and the Clerk of Parliament, informing them of his absence from the state.

“The matter of his absence has been the subject of much discussion over time. The reality is that the member has from time to time been in touch with the President of the Senate and the Clerk of Parliament. It is not the most comfortable position to be in, but there has been a measure of an explanation. As far as I am aware, this matter is going to be addressed by mid-July. No, let me be much clearer, it would not extend beyond the end this month,” he said.

Spencer declined to discuss allegations that Charles has been experiencing serious financial difficulties, stating that the matter may have been overblown in the media.

On the question of whether or not Charles’ supposed financial difficulties would render him ineligible to be a candidate for the United Progressive Party (UPP) leading up to the next general elections, Spencer said he is not sure that these issues have reached the level that would disqualify the senator.

The Prime Minister noted that the candidate issue is an on-going process in the UPP and that no decision has been made one way or another.

“There’s no firm decision on just who the candidates will be and where they will carry the UPP-banner. This has to do with party strategies and what are the best options for the party in certain areas,” he noted.

However, Caribarena.com understands that while Senator Charles has written several letters to the President of the Senate and the Clerk of Parliament indicating that he was seeking medical attention in the United States, none of these letters has been accompanied by a medical certificate from a doctor as is required by the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Code.

Finance Minister Harold Lovell recently confirmed that Senator Charles is still being paid every month despite his extended absence.

Charles’ financial woes include the fact that, to date, his Clock Tower Mall, a centrepiece of the UPP’s 2009 election campaign, remains unoccupied and has been placed on the auctioneer’s block by a local bank.

Notes From A Native Son of The Rock. We have been called the most corrupt SIDS in the OECS & Caricom. It is said that we are a "small place" without a reading public.

How many even had a clue that the lad was the junior associate of the Hon. Min. Of Public Works. Not A Peep from this Minister who for his inept management has been taken to task by his colleagues in the lower house and the House of Sober Second Thought. Why was he not screaming bloody murder about this errant slacker or wayward urchin? Maybe, just maybe, They are still Soberly Thinking with Sobriety. Check his Compensation Packet. Even SAM has cleaned up this practice of Misappropriatio n of Public Funds. As a young Project Manager, this was one of the practices you kept an eye open to.

The rot starts at the top. Investigate the dying Palms.

Go Well! Respect!

John French as usual your comments bring back memories. I recall when discussing the Labour Code Amendment 2011, April 2011, in the senate, that the great Dr. Cort made the comment that nationals need to do better. He stated we need to be more serious about our approach to work and sited as an example the problem they are having, in getting locals to work in hotel management. What now stuck me is as he is saying this, Tamo is, or about to go, on leave for now over a year dealing with personal issues which have nothing to do with his health. Truly shows the bad example is coming from the top.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock.

No show Jobs at the Highest Level Of Government. Cabinet approves. GoAB approves. Senate - The Upper House Of Second Sober Thought - approves.

Why therefore, are you surprised at the performance and productivity levels being exhibited throughout the Nation?

I don't see what the big fuss is all about! have any of you ever heard Tamo debate in the Senate? I think he's doing more for the level of debate in the Senate by not showing up!

I believe that Baldwin asked him to stay away so as to reduce the embar**ing contributions made in the Senate by him!

They have no one in line to run in St phillips north.Maybe thats the reason they are planning to tie it in with St Peters, they know they will never have that seat,so it will not affect them,it will just make it one less for the oppostition, the PM may not be good at Maths, but he is brilliant when it comes to scheming and dexxxxing.

Who will run in St. Phillip's North then? As I heard a commentator say during the results of the 2009 elections "St. Phillips North has never left the Labour Party"

So who is on the UPP ticket to run in that constituency?

Part I was ceereeus® Now, the darker side of these Tyrants are shinning through. Questions...sho rt or long term disabillity on any job, is covered under one's insurance coverage, which Insurance Co covers Parliament?: Or, do they have their own private coverage, NOT Mt. Obama's healthcare? How can he vote or debate on legislation from where he is? As a scene from the movie, "cirQue de La Antigua", the parliament building(built like the boat house at roman's) is torpedoed, it sinks, all (UPP & ALP & THE THRONE STAFF) are all rescued by Siboney Natives on 'daggalag', brought to Old Road where they stand trial before King Obeah and are found guilty of Mutiny against the Citizens of Antigua, Barbuda &Redonda. They are then transformed into cackling hens and ordered to lay enough eggs to make up for the lost of Mac Emamuel chicken farm. Ant decent, they go to Skywill's slaughter house to get ready for someones pot.

ANTIGUAN WOMAN according to Tamo over 3 months ago:

Quote:
I had a number of personal issues and also I used the opportunity to have a physical check-up, and all the results are back and I am in good health," the senator said.
Antigua Woman, the senate was in session within the past week and Tamp was absent. This is another example of how the government does not value properly spending tax payers moneys

Senator...forfe it his pay back to the State!

Quote:

So let me get this. It is okay for Senator Charles to be "absence" from the Senate for an "extended" period of time, as long as he "checks" in with "relevant authorities." The actions to allow the Senator to still "collect" a monthly check from the backs of the "tax-payers, with no "legitimate" excuse, shows how much the PM condone the "wrongs" to remain "right!" We all know the Senator has no "medical condition," so why not the PM ask him to "forfeit" all the salaries he has collected? Only in Antigua!

Spencer Addresses Tamo's Absence

#15 Anu » 2012-07-04 11:33

The car park failure, Wadadli Power Plant, The silent Venezuela 50 million loan, 65 million dollar fencing scandal, Senator (Tamo Charles) still being paid although being absent from the senate for over a year and the list goes on and on. I guess the thrilogy of legislation: TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY & GOOD GOVERNANCE represents the above failures of the UPP Govt. How much more deceptive can this Govt be? Their blatant disregard for the laws that governs this country of which they are apart of, clearly demonstrates they are above laws. I guess the thought of leading by example is not an option in their style of leadership.

We are all talking about his salary as a Senator. During the same period of his absence, is also being paid as the Junior Minister of Public Works? The UPP made Ghost Workers a pillar of the 2004 campaign. Now in power, they have Ghost Senators and Ghost Ministers.

These people have strayed from every single thing they preached when in opposition. Can’t wait for them to get the hell out of Dodge!!

Why is this newspaper suppressing the news?

#12 Vicnes » 2012-07-04 09:08

Caribarena, there is a High Court judgement, dated May 8, 2012, against Tamo in favor of RBTT Bank Caribbean Limited for the sum of 6 million dollars.

Why are you suppressing this fact? How can any newspaper in a so called democratic country suppress the fact that a public official has defaulted on a 6 million dollar loan? This is just surreal.

If the information is true, then the Senator should present a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner to cover his absence in order to continue to get his salary. This is standard HR practice.

Dr. Dr. seeks evey opportunity or non opportunity to bash the media. To suggest that the media has over blown Tammo's financial woes is just ridiculous. Is it safe to say that the Bank has over blown it also. What has happened to the proposed hotel project. Mr. Charles is my good friend and that has not changed, but he needs to come clean with the people and so too should Dr. Dr..

This Deaxxxat Is Not Sick

#4 Vicnes » 2012-07-04 07:46

The fact that Tamo has not attended any meeting of the Senate in over a year means nothing. The entire body is useless.

I strongly doubt that this guy is seeking any medical treatment. It looks more like he abxxxxed rather than xxy xxxT xxxk Caribbean Limited the 6 xxxon dxxxrs plus that he xxxs them.

Furthermore, the fact that the clowns in the government continue to pay this deaxxxat without allegedly any proof that he is really sick, only shows that they will protect each other to the bitter end.

there is a possitive

#3 tenman » 2012-07-04 07:07

Though I agree its wrong for him to be paid for doing nothing, even his presence equates to the same thing. His actions show that he accepts this conclusion. At least with the current situation, the senate sessions are less long and the public has less asinine comments to contend with. In addition, an interview over 3 months ago (march 2012), confirms his absence is not due to illness:

Quote:
I had a number of personal issues and also I used the opportunity to have a physical check-up, and all the results are back and I am in good health," the senator said. Read more: http://www.caribarena.com/antigua/news/politics/99963-tamo-planning-his-return.html#ixzz1zeNbJASQ
Is it now practice to absent oneself from the country for over a year to do a physical checkup?
