The PM Is Free To Speculate - Browne

The PM Is Free To SpeculateAntigua St John's - Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says Chairman of the Opposition Antigua Labour Party Gaston Browne has all but told him that he is convinced that what his colleagues in opposition are saying about the Wadadli Power Plant (WPP) “are absolute lies.”

“He almost told me that today,” the PM told a gathering on Thursday as he recounted bits of his meeting with Browne earlier that day.

Spencer added, in regard to the ongoing protests and other public statements, that: “He (Browne) went sometime ago as far as to say…  that they have a bunch of people within the Antigua Labour Party who are paid to do what they are doing.”

The prime minister admitted that the engines do indeed have problems but assured listeners that the issues have nothing to do with whether or not they are new or used.

“I want to reassure you that those engines are new engines and they are performing,” he said.

When contacted Gaston Browne said he had “no time for foolishness” and that PM Spencer was free to speculate as he wished about his (Browne’s) true feelings about the power plant.

Browne maintained that he has not taken a position for or against whether the engines are new or used and all he is interested in is finding out whether Antigua got “value for money”.

“The prime minister is free to speculate. He did not say I told him anything. He said what he believed and he is free to speculate whatever. The reality is that I reiterated the call for an investigation into the Wadadli Power Plant issue, he gave an undertaking to address the issue subject to a discussion with Cabinet,” Browne said.

Browne noted that he greatly respects the fact that the prime minister has opted to first discuss the matter with his Cabinet before making a final determination.

“I just hope that at the end of the discussion with the Cabinet they would have concluded that there should be an independent investigation into the Wadadli Power Plant,” he said.

I thought you advised me to be mature in my comments. Its a good thing i can detect a hypocrite from a mile off, you,re just that.It seem my comment directed towards DAVID SHOULIN,stirke a chord with you more than anyone else,is it because both David Shoulin& the good Jackie Spence maybe one and the same?? I fail to see how someone commenting on his/her desire to migrate makes his comments comedial, its things like these that pushed me to say what i did about the intellectual capacity of some persons, you now seem to fall in that bracket, whom the cap fits let them proudly wear it,since my previous comment was not directed at you,you choose to pick it up,then thats your problem. I am an Antiguan, and you or no one else will intimidate me,i am free to speak my mind. Just like you find my rantings comedial,so i find the fact that Antigua sits back and allow the Govt to do whatever they please and the only thing they can do is blog and blog, that is what i find to be comedial, again if the cap fits you wear it proudly,i perfer to put my energy into more productive areas.

I see there is a great obsession with Gaston Browne going on. Everyone seems to be trying their best to gut the Chairman. I don't blame them though; the young man has a lot to show for himself. Gaston keep pressing on brother. I like how you state your opinion and let it be. They need to learn to respect others and their positions. Jealousy and selfishness are just getting the best of them now but im certain YOU WILL PREVAIL IN THE END.And remember... Dear Sir,

There is an old saying in Trinidad which goes like this: "Dog does play dead to catch cobo (buzzard)"!

See what you can deduce from this fable.

As an aside, would Wilmouth be the "spider" and Baldwin the "fly" in you fable above?

THE SPIDER AND THE FLY

#50 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2012-06-30 20:05

Hello Fellow Commentators,

Read with particular interest the 49 commentaries emanting from the subject matter. A high percentage were well reasoned-some attacking; ...some defensive; ...some offering suggesstions; ...some fascinating and some, well, somewhat troubling.

As you must know, the "...politicking " is not an area to my liking. But somethings seemed reminiscent to the fabled story of the "...SPIDER AND THE FLY."

The cunning "...SPIDER" invited the unsuspecting "...FLY" into its "...PARLOR" only to be entangled in its web. The poor "..FLY" could not escape and fed on for a meal. See what may be deduced from such fable.

Lively interaction. There is no need to quarrel and fight. Best wishes to all.

Peter you think the worse of the current leader of the party yet u vote ALP. it is obvious by your constant attack on Joseph you don't like him either. You can see the faults of everyone in the party except gaston. Why don't you make a public plea for both honorable gentlemen to give back the campaign contributions from standford while they were both negotiating with the standford group. The depositors would be delighted. Go easy on Joseph. Years in your party has helped him to spot corruption after all he exposed the fencing scandal.

NO NEED TO SPECULATE

#46 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-30 17:51

MP Gaston Browne, is on the right track, corruption still exist within the ALP. Neither democracy nor contrary views are part of ALPs new agenda, old lies are forever repeated, Gaston is now ALPs scapegoat.

Additionally, PM Baldwin Spencer should be more tactical with words, and not be part of the covert attack against MP Gaston Browne. The latest news fodder in addition to the campaign of lies against the WPP needs a quick resolution.

And MP Browne patriotic assertion that monies were paid to known individual is the begining of that resolve. So, there is no need for speculation!

To APUA Engineers and our Politicos: The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer is a ritual for students about to graduate from an engineering program at a university in Canada. Out of the list, The two most vocal on this matter have been Molwyn Joseph and Lennox Weston. Gaston Browne has launched his objection to Joseph & Weston argument that the power plant is old. I have never heard either of the two gentlemen attack Mr Browne via the media. The last time i check, Vere Bird 3 is an attorney at law and the founder of the Lone Wolf Picketers. It's very shortsighted of Gaston Browne not to have foreseen party supporter's displeasure at his going it alone in a meeting with the Prime Minister. And what did he accomplished from doing that? Absolutely nothing! Only he came away feeling good about an empty promise made by the Prime Minister to talk it over with his Cabinet members - yes,the same Cabinet members who voted unanimously that there was no need for an inquiry into the matter. So,Gasto n,you really didn't make any progress there.

The Issue Of Value For Money

#40 Anu » 2012-06-30 14:07

If Gaston Browne wanted to know if we got value for money, he would have had the previlage as a statesman to get the information. Every company that manufacture power plants sells their product at a price per megawatt. The UPP govt claim that they purchased the 30 megawatt WPP for U$47 million, which means they spent aproximately U$1.5666 million per megawatt. I highly doubt that a power plant that can only consume HFO (Bunker C) fuel, would cost so much money if they are new and base on the performance of the WPP, definitely not a new power plant. It is incumbent of the govt to tell the nation the whole truth about the power plant. Gaston please do some research and report back to the nation.

Birdwoman, unfortunately, you totally and recklessly took my post out of context! I am sorry if I am not saying what you want me to say! For the record, I NEVER said on this forum that I support MJ or any of the ALP senior members for "leadership!" Please stop "speculating" and spreading "childrens melee!" If you are "regular" blogger on CA, you would know that I support an "inquiry" into WPP, and call for those involved in "corruption to be dealt with "at-the-fire-at -the-gate!" My calls for "accountability " and "leadership" from our leaders have no "color" or "origin," as the country comes before any "politician" or the "sycophants" that suppot them! Yet, I am sure that wouldn't put your mind at "ease" as you are clearly more concern about adding "fire" and see "blood" to an already heated battle between GB and MJ for leadership! If that is your cup-of-tea, it is up to you! I am here just to see the people get their "justice" and sound\honest "representation " from their leaders!

Time for some action

#35 It Is Me » 2012-06-30 12:45

It is obvious that Baldwin Spencer has something to do with this scandal now. Why would he be stonewalling for so long. It is obvious that their is allot of wrong with that power plant.

Unity is strength and the PM has all of the opposition divided. It's Machiavelli style at it's best!!!

Now if all the ALP, Lone Wolf, Observer, Caribarena and all the NGO's were to get together we wouldn't be in this mess still.

We need leadership on this issue ... let's see who will step up to the plate!!!

Pressure has to be brought on the Chinese embassy RIGHT NOW. They came and told us the plant was new at the press conference. They even threatened to "reserve their right to sue people". It is our time to "reserve our right"!!!

I have to give Baldwin Spencer credit for one thing ... when he was in opposition he did a good job of bringing these forces together for the same goal. Something which the ALP is lacking right now. Could it be because their leadership only cares about one thing ... waiting for elections so they can win by default.

Prove it, that is the reason. you can address other avenues with a more convincing argument. Let me educate. China have a ton of factories built brand new, never used sitting in rural areas all over china. Companies from all over the world come to mainland china and buy these plants. map, chop, ship and reassemble in another country. Some of these plants are illegal to operate in China and sit for years never used until someone sell/broker it. The key is parts. If you can't get parts in a timely fashion you shoul not buy it. @ Birdwoman. With all due respect to you, your statement was'nt all accurate. Mr Brownes letter to the PM did ask for an INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION OR A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. In my opinion, Gaston has made many blunders in the handling of this whole WPP issue. He has made public statements via the media talking about his colleagues attacking him based on third hand information. He has also made threats to his colleagues to expose their agenda via the media but he never did. I have never heard Mr Molwyn Joseph made attacks on him, only to rebut some of his statements. After the back and forth challenges about New or Old or value for money, Browne wrote to the PM and a meeting was conviened. He should have never attended that meeting alone, since their are others in the ALP party who has been more vocal in the public with this matter, they should have been apart of the dialogue. If this was done, this situation about my words againts yours would have never happened. Gaston speaks about his colleagues trying to achieve one up manship with the WPP, however his actions is supportive of his own statement. Mr Browne, consider doing some reflection & redemption at this time.

John French II, your post helped me recall a forgotten memory. There was a similar meeting between MP Browne, MP Lake and the government some years ago. Just like now suggestions were made that Browne stated things that he later claimed he did not. The meeting was about the procurement act. The opposition leader, in about Feb 2010, then made a mandate that no member can meet with Government members without at least 3 senior ALP members (may have been 2). Seems Mp Browne may have forgotten this policy dictate from Bird

The Gaston Browne you defend so vehemently is no better than those mercenaries. He said that people in the ALP got money to push the power plant issue. That is clear bribery. It is corruption in its purest form. Why is he not revealing those persons? It has been several weeks if not more since Gaston made that statement. Why is he defending those corrupt ALP officials? Why would Gaston deliberately say he knows ALP officials have been bribed, and then never utter a word as to who they are. He is defending corruption, like it or not. I think that Gaston should either come forward with what he knows, or he should be charged as an accessory to that crime. He is no better than the rest.

That is a very "strong" statement that some would say should be a "defamation" suit! Mr. Chairman, this is not about "foolishness," it is about protecting your "character" and "reputation," which is now all speculation and running a muck in the hands of your opponent! Such may ensure ELECTABILTY, further cemented by convincing assurances of “…ACHIEVABILITY” and timely “…DELIVERABILITY” on electoral promises, void of deceit. - Rawlston Pompey

I think it is a shame that Robin wants to be Leader of the ALP and so forceful about the WPP - when he rolled over the previous agreement to APC in 2003!

That should be the next "deal" to be independently investigated! maybe if the UPP is clever enough they could get the investigation to include this deal?

In the mean time I suggest my friend David Shaolin gets a good lawyer! Maybe he could get a reference from our Dear friend Asot?

Look at injunctions! Lard me belly!

TREACHERY AND BUFFOONERY

#13 CLASSICUS » 2012-06-30 08:05

PM Spencer had revealed what might now be reasonably seen as a clear case of treachery and buffoonery on the part of MP Gaston Browne.

This usually happened to opportunistic people and those who were indecisive and sitting fences. In any group, it is about unity of purpose, one accord and speaking with one voice, not twisted tongue and glib talks.

See CLASSICUS' earlier comments to Gaston letter struck chord and PM Spencer's reply to Browne's letter.

Both Browne and Spencer appeared to be at variance as to what really transpired at the meeting. Who is to be believed? We are told that the meeting was informative.

But meetings where no participants could say it was cordial, fruitful and outcome was receptive, often ended in confusion and doubts.

Mr. Spencer, if the engines are new and that they are performing, then how come at one point recently, as many as five of the engines were off line? If the problems APUA is facing with the engines have nothing to do with whether the engnes are old or new, then tell us what is causing the problem. Dr. Dr., every time you open your mouth, you put your feet in it. It is time that you start the engine of your brain before you put your mouth in gear. You are simply the duncest Phd. in the world. It is clear that your Phd. stands for 'Permanent Head Damage'.

Dr. Dr. can say what he like! Maybe Brown "almost" told him he liked his pink shirt?

Maybe he "almost" told Brown that many of his Cabinet colleagues don't believe the engines are new?

Maybe he "almost" told Brown that he believes that Shoul advised him badly on this one?

Maybe Brown "almost" told him that when the Independent Investigation is completed Antiguans and Barbudans will forget about the results?

Maybe he "almost" told Brown that Shoul told him that the engines are indeed old?

Maybe he "almost" told Brown that one of his Senior Party colleagues got "tons" of money from the former "roll-over" generator deal?

This is all "almost" so funny?

RE: The PM Is Free To Speculate - Browne

#9 R. Berry » 2012-06-30 07:46

New or used is an issue, because our Government has repeatedly told us that they're new. So if they are actually used, that means the Government has been lying to the public.

Value for money is also important and as the PM admitted (The prime minister admitted that the engines do indeed have problems), it certainly seems the engines are not performing as they should.

I think the public of Antigua can say with a high degree of certainty is that everything at the WPP is not as it should be and somewhere along the line the public has been deceived.

What does a politician and/or Chinese have in common....they both tell lies for a living.

Congratulations to Gaston for getting the investigation moving. The irony is, now that the PM is looking to have the independent investigation, the hawkish elements in the ALP dont want any investigation. They are now looking at ways in which they could frustrate having an independent investigation. PM Spencer call the investigation and embar** them.

Like I said in an earlier post a few days ago that that statement by GB was going to come back and bite him: "Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says Chairman of the Opposition Antigua Labour Party Gaston Browne has all but told him that he is convinced that what his colleagues in opposition are saying about the Wadadli Power Plant (WPP) “are absolute lies.....He (Browne) went sometime ago as far as to say… that they have a bunch of people within the Antigua Labour Party who are paid to do what they are doing.”
Gaston has been played like a fiddle; if the PM thinks that he does not have to give an account to 80K plus citizens, what makes him think that the PM will submit to his wishes?

Gaston may have been played, also I agree with browne that new or used is not the issue. If they used that will come out eventually. Are they worth $47 million and if not how much.

I guess if worthless CDs are the #1 export, one could only expect that worthless generators would be the #1 import.

Why is it that Antiguans think that the rules are only suspended for them?

If there are people "within the Antigua Labour Party who are paid to do what they are doing.” that money almost certainly came from the Stanford investors.

Where are Wait and **less? Shouldn't they be getting that money back?
