ALP To Mobilize Against Gerrymandering

ALP To Mobilize Against GerrymanderingAntigua St John's - The opposition Antigua Labour Party is getting ready to mobilize a series of protest actions against plans by the governing United Progressive Party Administration to make drastic changes to the electoral boundaries on Antigua.

Caribarena.com has learned that drastic changes have been proposed for 14 of the 16 constituencies on Antigua. The two that will remain relatively intact are the St John’s City West and St John’s City East constituencies. Minor changes have been proposed for St John’s Rural North, but all other constituencies will see radical changes if the proposals before the Boundaries Committee are accepted.

Against this background, ALP Political Leader, Lester Bird, said he is convening a meeting of all the party’s candidates and other officials on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

Reports from sources close to the commission said the attempt is to have an equalization of the number of voters in the constituencies. But the ALP is not
buying that claim as the proposals so far challenge that assertion.

“It is not just a question of equalization,” Bird stated, “it is a little more complex than that. An attempt is being made to ensure that they (UPP) have an unfair demographic advantage in the (general) elections.”

Bird noted that the Commonwealth Observer Group that has observed several elections in Antigua and Barbuda had recommended that the country should
seek to have an equality of electors in each constituency. But he added that what is being attempted is not what the Commonwealth Group had in mind.

“This is gerrymandering of the highest order when you consider that the proposal includes removing Potters from St. George’s when it is known the ALP candidate Dean Jonas is from that community. The same thing is being attempted in my constituency, they are taking away those areas where I
was strongest in an attempt to ensure that (Dr) Errol Cort can beat me,” he explained.

He provided other details of the proposals that include creating a single St Mary constituency and a single St Phillip. “The UPP won two elections based on the current electoral boundaries, why try to make these changes unless the party fears that it is has no other chance to win the next general elections,” Bird
declared.

Bird was speaking on the ALP radio programme, Insight, where host Steadroy Cutie Benjamin, an attorney, said he had been researching cases of electoral
boundary changes across the Caribbean where challenges by the opposition have been successful.

“I have researched three or four of these cases and the courts have often asked a number of questions. These include; to what extent has there been
participation by the opposition, what has been the level of consultation with the communities affected, and have the people been shown the proposed changes before they are implemented?” he noted.

Benjamin said the courts have always wanted to ensure that before these changes are recommended and implemented, that full and open discussions are held with different stakeholders, including the opposition party. He said none of this took place in Antigua.

Why can't we as a people see the WPP debacle for what it is and mobilize ourselves? That like many other issues on hand (fencing, romantic rhythms , sidewalks, roads surrounding SVRS, foodcity, bencorp, the new IRD building at woods, 89,000 dollar bathroom and the list goes on...) is to clear for us to be depending on the alp for action. How come Antiguans appear so soft all of a sudden??

Well said. If only they will listen. They read the comments and say oh that's only a few people . We'll just continue to do what we 've been doing. They don't realize by staying quiet about the WWP is ensuring the UPP another 5years

Bounderies commission are at work all the time around the world in democratic societies so this idea that government is gerrymandering the lines is unfair, this line of thinking is totally stupid and selfserving, in oder to claim such hanky panky one has to see the lines first before you can lay such claims, my question is has the commision finished its work, was it presented to parliment for debate, was it approved by both houses, was it signed into law if not its time to act as a responsible opposition and stop creating panic when there is none. Should you regain power and God forbid your government will have to perform such an exercise and then what, be vigilent yes but please stop madness you cant fool me anymore.

ALP really don't get it

#4 It Is Me » 2012-06-27 15:32

How come the ALP never mobolized and held a special meeting to get to the bottom of the Wadadli Power Plant issue?

The ALP better realise if they do not satisfy the public with their militance on the WPP issue they can fight for all kinds of gerrymandering etc... it won't matter they will lose the election without the people behind them!!!

If they deal with this Wadadli Power Plant issue like the people expect them to then they won't have to worry about any gerrmandering because no matter who goes where UPP should not win another election with all this corruption on their hands!!! No matter what part of the island you live nobody in their right mind will vote for more stealing and corruption!!!

And they think gerrymandering can win or lose elctions nowadays? It is and always will be "ALL ABOUT THE ECONOMY STUPID" ... as former president Bill Clinton so wonderfully reminded us years ago.

You should be glad they making your constituency smaller, because you can't walk properly!

By the way, where exactly you holding this "big" meeting on Wednesday? You going actually leave your house and go to your office? Impossible! I would hazard a guess that you will have this meeting at your home and gather all the Comrades around your bedside!

Carib Arena please let us know where this "important" meeting will be held!

You just don't get it? Time for you to make way for another Leader who is in better shape! Why you want to stay beyond your time? Are you implying that there is none other in the ALP who can take the mantle of Leadership?

If I were one of the ALP candidates I would feel ashamed!
