JOSEPH SAYS ALP IS UNITED

United?Antigua St John's - Opposition member for St Mary’s North, Molwyn Joseph, and one of the men said to be jockeying for the leadership of the Antigua Labour Party, is dismissing suggestions that the party is disunited.

Speaking on Sunday’s Big Issues programme on Observer Radio, Joseph said recent conflicting public statements issued by senior members of the party was more an issue of disagreement rather than disunity.

“What’s going on in the ALP is more a question of disagreement rather than disunity. These should not however distract us from our goal of holding the government accountable for its actions,” he stated.

Last week, an ALP motion of No Confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer, failed to reach the floor of the House of Representatives after the mover, ALP leader Lester Bird, did not return to the sitting of the house due to ill health.

That act raised the spectre of an aging and ailing Bird and his ability to withstand the rigors of a general elections and governing should his party succeed at the next poll in 2014.

Immediately after the motion was aborted in the House, both Joseph and St Phillip North representative, Robin Yearwood, issued a joint public statement which they claimed was designed to calm party faithfuls that ‘all is not lost as the fight continues’.

The following day, ALP chairman Gaston Browne, issued a separate statement suggesting among other things that the statement by Joseph and Yearwood was their way of making a case for a leadership convention. Both men replied separately to Browne’s statement claiming that it was he, Browne, who really wanted the convention since they had not made a call for one.

These disagreements have been played out in the public domain giving rise to fears that the discord is symptomatic of a deeper problem of serious disagreements among the leadership of the party.

Political scientist, Dr George Bell of Barbados, said what may be happening in the ALP is a situation where the leader is not able to stamp his authority on the organization. He said a leader must have the vitality to lead, although, he cautioned, he does not subscribe to the notion that because a person is of an advanced age, that that person cannot lead.

He said the public disagreements among the leadership represent a challenge to the existing leader. “When a party is in opposition, it is more likely for the factions to voice their positions. It is when people would more openly challenge the existing leader,” he noted.

The intellectual added that a united party reflects a strong leader and a party where factions are openly contending is a party not yet ready to take over the leadership of the country.

He said an opposition party must quickly deal with the issue of factionalism if it is to exploit whatever weaknesses there may be in the governing party.

The Chairman of the Party and the Leader should be the firtst of make statements on the deferral of the no Confidence vote. Robyn and maolwyn are demonstrating their lack of respect for the leadership of the party, they need to be taught their place :-* .
Though I am not sure of Gastons ability to lead the party because of my lack of knowlege of his character please enlighten me.
Get it together boys we must get rid of the UPP please dont mess this up I would hate to have to migrate I love Antigua.

Molwyn is a very arrogant person who has no clue as to what is going on around him. Molwyn should not be speaking for the ALP. Molwyn lack genuine analytical skills. Molwyn should just go along with the leaders of the party and stop trying to have a party voice. How could Molwyn and Yearwood not aware that Lester was not going to show up for the no confidence? This is an insult to them. Lester see them as irrelevant. Therefore, there was no reason to inform them of his intended absence.

I decided to keep out of this one but the other bloggers have now seen Molwyn for exactly what he is. A spineless Jelly fish who will sing any tune to be seen and to be heard. The same Molwyn said on Fire & Steel three weeks ago that the party is disunited and that he will unite it. This is the leader the ALP wants ? Vere Bird 111 you must stop hating Gaston, you are no match for him and he is the ALP's answer. If he doesnt emerge your backside will remain a poor, destitute loser for five more years as an adult dependent of Vere Bird Jr. By the way, I understand you say that you are taking over the ALP. wishful thinking. Wheel and come again.

There is a division within the ALP.The so called senior members are jockying for position. So,mis ter senior party member, please do not tell us other wise.It would appear that the so called senior members Robin and Molwin think they are the ALP.I wonder what the other members of the party are thinking.I am referring to the elected members of parliament.I have known the man when we were kids growing up in Jennings. He thinks back then,he was the best at everything. He would do anything to win at meaning less games. Some of us have grown up and change our childish ways. This man is living in the past.Reminder,e veryone cannot be a leader. If one came in second it is not all bad.If you are greedy,be greedy about something worth while to the population and not self preservation.Yo u will not become the leader of the ALP.That is my opinion.

LIBERATE YOUR SOUL

Did you know about the blue chicken propaganda, the torching of the cane fields, the AFF, the Post Office bombing, the torching of Donald Halstead's residence.

Liberate your soul, before you speak. And by the way, did Bloom Cooper not condemn your daddy?

Because Vere Bird Jnr and Lester Bird made their contributions when they came home as young lawyers fighting PLM, more so than anyone whose main claim to fame is that they beat papa lazy 3 times. Even a gay crack addicted Marga Dawg could accomplish this feet if put on the ticket in City West.

Gaston should not be the leader. Anybody who is susceptible to persuasion by means other than educated advice is most definitely not what Antigua needs at this time. The much more aware and informed public of this century are fed up with the “wheeling and dealing” style of politics. There are other negatives to Gaston being a leader of this country but suffice it say that at this totally screwed up time in Antigua’s history I truly believe the country needs a leader who is selfless, experienced and methodical surrounded by advisors who are equally selfless and intellectually astute in the various fields that it will take to pull Antigua back up from its’ present cesspit of ineptitude, narrow mindedness and corruption. This citizen (and family) does not need to be assured daily about “unity”! Unity will come after the party creases are ironed out. This citizen wants to see strength, integrity and worthwhile vision for the future put into action by a caring individual who is capable of leadership. Think (nonpartisan for a while) carefully “godfather” who/whom has shown the mentioned qualities to the public? Gaston? Asot? I think not!

HOW COME?

#9 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-04 10:34

If leaders cannot decide or influence, why were so many Birds in the government? Review the many appointments made by your grandad and uncle. Gaston is the best choice for leader!

It may not be, but its looking that way

#8 young analyst » 2012-06-04 09:28

I maybe in agreement the minister joseph in the there may not be any disunity within the party, its important for you guys to realise that to the general public it may be looking that way. Thus measures must be put in place to ensure that these opinion be keep in house as to help maintain the convidence of the public that you are united for the cause of country and not for power.

leadership Challenge

#6 tenman » 2012-06-04 08:31

For the benefit of those who may have missed it, a bit of a re-post: Robin Yearwood has already declared his interest in leading the party. One occasion he did this was via the Collin Sampson show on April 19, 2012. It can be heard at the following url www.justin.tv/caribarena/b/315472340, 59 minutes and 40 seconds into the show (simply move the slider to that location). As perhaps an attack against GB, a few minutes earlier he stated no one can be anointed as leader, only the convention can make this decision. LB already made it pellucid that it was his wish that Browne take over from him, when the time comes, and he would back Browne at the leadership convention.

#2 Slapping Hand » 2012-06-04 07:12

Therein lies Maulwyn's problem...sayin g one thing with a straight face while the opposite is playing out for all to see!

A leader must be trusted! I guess he is at least telling the truth when he says he is not interested in any leadership convention?

He needs to do a crash course in matching his speech with reality!
