I Cut No Deal - PM Spencer

PM SpencerAntigua St john's - Prime Minister Spencer has added his own remarks to the flow of statements precipitated by Opposition Leader Lester Bird’s withdrawal of the Motion of No Confidence in his stewardship.

In a statement issued today, PM Spencer took pains to specifically refute speculation that he had “cut” some sort of deal with Mr. Bird in order to deflect a bruising parliamentary debate over his performance as prime minister.

Prime Minister Spencer’s statement follows:

Fellow Citizens and Residents: Yesterday, May 30, had been anticipated to be a seminal moment in the life of this government, the Parliament, and the Nation of Antigua & Barbuda, as Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Lester Bird, was slated to table a “Motion of No Confidence” in me, as Prime Minister.  Instead, we suffered the collective disappointment of what amounted to a no-show by the mover of the Motion.

I and my Government were prepared to vigorously defend our position and were utterly confident of our success in defeating the Motion.

Accordingly, we feel a strong sense of frustration at not having the opportunity to lay our case before the discerning people of this country even though we would have preferred not to engage in an exercise that had the potential to be bitterly divisive to the people we serve.

The Chairman of the ALP, the Hon. Gaston Browne, proffered apologies on behalf of his Leader, and cited illness as the reason behind his absence from the proceedings.

However, only the mover of the motion, himself, can speak to his decision not to deputize another Member to move the Motion.

What I can say, categorically, though, is that, contrary to the malicious rumours making the rounds, neither I, as Prime Minister, nor any Member of the Government bench, “cut any deal” or collaborated with the Opposition Leader on his decision to, in effect, withdraw the Motion of No Confidence.

There would have been absolutely no need for us to do so, given our level of confidence which is grounded in facts and in performance.

The Standing Orders make clear provisions for any Member to move a Motion and for a Member to move a Motion in place of another Member, as a Parliamentarian of Mr. Bird’s experience would know.

Therefore, Mr. Bird’s reluctance, or unwillingness, to have any of his colleagues stand-in for him might better be construed as a vote of no confidence in them.

Again, while we were and are prepared to stand and debate Mr. Bird’s Motion, we are pleased that our time can be better spent in working to realize the ambitions of the people of this country, which is the mandate we were given not once, but twice as a demonstration of the confidence reposed in us by the citizens and residents of fair Antigua & Barbuda.

May God continue to bless us all.

Maybe it is the global crisis that introduced at least one new tax every single yr since 2005,and have nothing meaningful to show for it. It was the global crisis that told them to purchase Gas guzzlers inorder to increase our already ridiculously high utilitiy rates, after promising us that we would see a reduction. The entire region is part of the planet Earth. How can you try to defend a Govt who has been in office for 8 1/4 yrs and have not introduced one single avenue for sustainable/lon g term employment.how do you really even attempt to defend that? On what record will they(you) come back to the people for re-election??

If someone loses his/her income, and cannot put food on they table, who should they blame, the Global meltdown?? Frankly i am really sick and tired of hearing those words, its worn out diatribe, and will not work anymore.Second, i never told you i lost my income, although its shrinking daily, with the help of the almighty i eat daily, i speak not just as an individual, but from the bigger picture of whats happening all around the island,if you cannot see or understand too bad,but dont settle comfortably in the thought that persons will understand that they cannot put food on their tables, accordin g to you,but it is the fault of the US/Europe.That will never cut it.Please------ -----.

And was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to contravene his countries own laws by purchasing the Chinese generators without parliamentary approval?

Was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to refuse to provide an open and transparent investigation into why we have old generators from the Chinese and why currently only two of which are working?

Was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to allegedly illegally commence building of the new airport terminal on land the government does not own?

Was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to waste millions on the fencing scandal and which he refuses to have an open investigation.

Was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to suppress the report into the FSRC?

Was it the collapse of the global market that caused Spencer to throw his full support behind Cort without the benefit of any investigation into his activities as Finance Minister receiving xxxxxx from Stanford?

Antiguan Woman, those who took the time to look at this issue from a logical point of view, will agree with me on this one point:the prime minister did not bring about the poor economic state of the nation. You're just saying that because you may have lost your income and are struggling to put food on the table and pay your rent and bills.Yes,you know what i'm talking about, the truth is, the collapsed global market has dealt a really hard blow to our already weak economy. This placed Antigua & Barbuda into a deep, deep hole.Shortly thereafter we got hit by the adverse effect of Sanford's ponzi scheme, which resulted in many people losing their jobs and incomes. You can say that we hit bottom at that point, and you can anticipate that it will take us years to dig ourselves out of it,considering the economy is still slowing around the world. It's okay for us to put pressure on the prime minister to fix the economy and relieve our suffering; It's not okay to say,"He has shown or taken no responsibility for the state he has bought us into."That story is specious!

You,re soo correct, his mother had great foresight unlike him, when she gave them that first name, the initial fitted perfectly with the last name to create what he is now,a real Bull **ter/barefaced scamp. Never in my lifetime have i experienced anyone like this,i,ve read of them, but never actually experienced for myself. How can they expect anyone to respect them, when they stand with eyes open wide and tongues lashing with blatant lies, telling us they are working in our best interest, things are going well in the country, they are open and transparent and Antigua never had it this good,it is obvious that they think we are all **s,we are that stupid that even our stomachs are growling form hunger,we are using candles at nights to give light because Apua has taken their electricity becuase we cant afford to pay the extortionate bills, our children walk aimlessly on the streets, because they cant find jobs, we pay taxes inorder to get a better life, instead all we get is complains and more taxes, but yet when Baldwin Spencer(DD,for double dumb) opens his mouth we should believe every word that comes from his mouth.

I ain't killin myself for no so-called politician. What if these so-called politicians are all a part of some so-called secret society, where a so-called honcho determines who does what? What if their so-called animosity btwn both parties is actually just a sham. Who knows what goes on behind so-called closed doors? If I choose to, I will go vote and choose the so-called lesser of 2 evils. We live in a WICKED world where human beings think dem head bigger than fu God. Let's not lose our souls and get heart attacks quarreling over so-called politics.

"For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil." Ecclesiastes 12:14

"And he changes the times and the seasons: he removes kings, and sets up kings: he gives wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:" Daniel 2:21

#18 Dig It » 2012-06-01 09:09

I guess those who "strongly" view Peter Wickham's insights can ask him if the PM or any members of the GOAB "cut-a-deal" with the opposition to kill the motion of No Confidence? I heard of our politicians cutting deals in dark-alleys or back-doors but if this is the case, the ones who "suffer" from these "infractions" are the people of the country! Yet, what took place in the dark will surely come to light? I recalled a elected parliamentarian saying a member of the opposition "beg" him to call off the troops (whatever went down is still a mystery). This is why we should "always" put country over party, and, stop being "oblivious" to what's going on in our country! We should be able to call a spade a spade, if they broke the "trust" of the people and put the country into economic despair! It is time we stop letting our leaders make a "mockery" of the country, with their actions\inactio ns to govern!

What was BS and his government looking forward to defend? The Wadadli Power Plant with only two of the six engines working? The failed housing projects? (Caribarena really need to take a look at the Follies project and see how termite eating away at houses). Can you defend the failed economy. One business owner said to me yesterday that total sales was less than $200 when it used to be more like over eightthousands at the same time during the year. How can this business pay rent, wages and salaries and other expenses on this kind of income. Soon will be out of business and more workers on the breadline. BS, defend that. It is clear that BS stands for a lot more than Baldwin Spencer.

One question for mr PM, where was your former deputy? that i think you should be studying at the moment. I think it is obvious that because of his absense the opposition had to come up with a way to stall this motion, as it is believed by them that he would vote against you. And you said "Therefore, Mr. Bird’s reluctance, or unwillingness, to have any of his colleagues stand-in for him might better be construed as a vote of no confidence in them" these cheap statements are so 70's and 80's politics, if the opposition leader cant make it back for what ever reason why would he allow the motion to continue? who would vote for him? I wont want to even touch the topic of cutting deal, frankly i dont know who would think that a deal was cut with the PM and th eopposition leader smh

Delegating another would be dwnright foolish

#8 Dax Rebel » 2012-06-01 06:27

The argument promoted by a few that another Opposition Member could have tabled the Motion of No-Confidence is downright foolish. The Speaker and UPP Members of the Lower House would have rushed for an early vote, realising the Opposition would have been one vote short. This action would clearly have defeated the purpose of the motion.
