MPs Respond to Missed Opportunity

MPs Respond to Missed OpportunityAntigua St John's - Two opposition members have spoken out about the lost opportunity to move a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer in the House of Representatives.

Molwyn Joseph and Robin Yearwood issued the following release on Wednesday after their political leader was unable to attend Parliament because of health issues.

Their statement is reprinted in full.

Joint statement by the Honourable Robin Yearwood, and the Honourable Molwyn Joseph

We, senior leaders of the Antigua labour party, utilize this medium to express our deepest disappointment at the loss of an opportunity to debate the motion of no confidence which we expected to have been tabled in the lower house yesterday.

We recognise the fact that ALP supporters in particular, and the people of Antigua & Barbuda in general, are disappointed and chagrined that because he was unwell, our comrade leader Lester Bird, who is on record as the mover, caused the motion to be withdrawn.

We, however, wish to assure the people of Antigua & Barbuda that the work that we have been spearheading to keep the public informed of developments of critical importance to the well-being of the nation will continue.

We maintain the position that the policies of the upp administration represent the greatest threat to the future of Antigua & Barbuda, and that those policies will continue to bring further hardship to the people of this long-suffering nation.

We note that, even during this sitting of parliament, the UPP has passed legislation to further increase the already unbearable tax burden they have placed on the backs of the people.

We pledge to the people of Antigua & Barbuda that we will vigorously pursue the proper and patriotic struggle to rid our nation of the terminal threat posed by the discredited united progressive party.

We will not permit the attention of the horrified people of this abused country to be diverted from the destructive record of the UPP as exemplified by the EC$54 million dollar fences affair, and the EC$140 million (USD $52 million) dollar Chinese power plant scandal, and the continuing decline of our already ravaged economy.

Now, jointly, we reach out to all right-thinking people of Antigua & Barbuda to rally together in support of the salvation of our fair nation.

The struggle to rid Antigua & Barbuda of the unaccountable and lawless UPP must be brought to a successful conclusion. To that end we pledge our unremitting efforts.

I agree with aj and his blogg 'We de people'. It is time for all of us to stop waiting on the politicians to do it all. If the people of this country get it together, we will see the back of the UPP immediately if not sooner. "If the people will lead, then the leaders will follow". We all complain of Lester Bird not been fit and too old, but we the fit and young ones sit on our laurels and just wish that things will happen. "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride". It is time for us to put shoulders to the wheel, work, talk is not what we need. If we are going to take Antigua from the UPP, we've go to toil and toil and toil.

Lester if your health is failing you can no longer represent us as leader. As a concultant you can teach the younger politician to put the people first and their personal enrichment second thereby they can keep their seat for many years. fix whatever ails the labour party now , the people need your help desperately :-x

The time has come for us as a party to look seriously at a change of guard. The Leader has done his turn and should be given his props, However, this is not automatic this it is given to the Deputy. I am of the opinion that we need to look deeper than Gaston. He is a good politician however, I think he would to the ALP more harm than Good. It its time for Molwyn Joseph and Robin Yearwood to put up or shut up and take this organization that is greater than all of us seriously and make a bid for the leadership thereof.
We cannot simply take the hard earned sweat of the g** root people in this country and trample on them. Remember that there are people out there who have given of their very last to see this movement continue.
I therefore call on Comrade leader to resign and in doing so, I will also call on Gaston Browne and Asot Micheal to do so. Time for a fresh start.

Statement should read

#21 Help » 2012-05-31 13:24

The Statement from the two ALP members of parliament should have started this way....."We, the senior members of the Antigua Labour Party and Parliamentary Representatives for OLD PARHAM ROAD, regret not being able to represent our constituents in the House of Representatives on Wednesday."

Was Lester really sick? Or did he suddenly realize that he was making a fool of himself before the world and decided that he and Asot would stay away from Parliament?

Alp members are a bunch of talk show bullies. Any decent opposition would have certainly made UPP a one term government. We are stuck with an incompetent bunch and a greedy dishonest opposition waiting to march at hab deed drums.

#16 Harris. TJ. Smith » 2012-05-31 10:16

Its now time for Labor to rally around its roots and allow Molwyn/Robin to purge the IHI deel maker from the Instititution'. .... Labor has been sold out again and again and will sellout the next election unless the IHI DEEL MAKER and his supports are purged..
There money is not needed and very little will have to be spent on the next elections if that liability is not involved,ON BOTH SIDES'''!!!!
Both UPP/ALP patriots have to come together to save the Nation...

Changing of the guard

#14 Time up » 2012-05-31 09:58

Can anybody tell me what exactly are Robin and Molwyn saying? This half-cocked, so called diplomatic statement does NOT help to reenergize the party base and certainly represents nothing to the wider electorate.
Leadership NEEDED for party and country.
The country is ready and ripe for female leadership. I hope Dr. Dr does not find willing hands to scuttle this one.
Lester, Gaston, Robin and Molwyn fail........... . Time for Gail

Changing of the guard

#13 Time up » 2012-05-31 09:52

Lester Bird has played into Peter Wickham's assertion about his age, medical condition and inability to lead a modern party.
It's now time for the ALP to respectfully and quietly (unless he resists) resign Lester Bird in the party, public and national interest. Do not allow him to do any more damage to the party's chances of winning at the next poll or to his own checkered political reputation.
I want to start the movement for new, fresh, bright leadership in the person of Gail Christian. Let the waters divide!!!

Are you kidding me? The ALP provided the distraction to the nation by making a big deal of this no confidence motion - which had as much a chance of passing as a snow bxll's chance of survival in hell. After the build up and asking people to come to Parliament in their numbers, we have this anti-climactic conclusion - Lester Bird's no-show for the presentation of his motion.

The ALP is as bad an opposition party as the UPP is as a ruling party.

Time for Lester to go

#8 Judge Dredd » 2012-05-31 08:25

The ALP can jump high and jump low but unless Lester Bird retires their party is finished. The man can't stand. He can't sit. He rarely attends anything. What value does he bring? Time for Molwyn to stop talking and step up to the plate and take control of the ALP.

Let's get serious...is this the "new" look of the ALP?

Get ready for another term in opposition Labourites!

By the way, no where in that Statement did they say that they visited their leader after the report of his illness. Something doesn't seem as it looks!

#6 Bush Doctor! » 2012-05-31 07:47

This picture has done Maulwyn and Robin more harm than good! They represent the "Old Guard"!

I think the reason why they have issued a joint statement is because neither will allow the other to be Leader! What is not shown in this picture is the knives drawn at each other!

I still can't get the gist of this Statement? In addition couldn't they as "Senior Party Members" called a meeting of the Party Executive and send a letter to the Leader about their concerns? Or meet with the Leader and leave with a firm commitment from him about his resignation - due to his ill health?

I guess there is none more foolish than an old fool ...except two old fools!

Really? Is this the best these two clowns could come up with after this fiasco? It would have been better if they had said nothing!

Even in this time of their Party's crisis where you would think they would show some Leadership and outline a plan of action moving forward, they seem to be "angry" yet are careful not to step on Lester's foot! If they think Lester needs to leave, then say so!

Sorry...I really expected more from these cowards! I think Magic should challenge Lester...everyo ne else seems so afraid!

They look like they're lost!

Hardened Heart

#4 JB » 2012-05-31 07:22

On this issue...I must say, I am a little disappointed. However, I always thought that even if the resolution was tabled that it would not be passed. As a person of faith, I remember the words of Babbie Mason, in her song, "All things work for our good, Though sometimes we don't see how they could
Struggles that break our hearts in two, Sometimes blind us to the truth
Our Father knows what best for us, His ways are not our own, So when your pathway grows dim, And you just don't see Him, Remember you're never alone. God is too wise to be mistaken, God is too good to be unkind, So when you don't understand, When you don't see His plan, When you can't trace His hand, Trust His heart."

God could have freed the Israelites from Egyptian bondage immediately, but instead he choose to prolong the deliverance process, by allowing Pharoah's to harden his heart until he learnt his lesson...so be it...until then!
