Chaku Says No Confidence Will Fail

Chaku Says No Confidence Will FailAntigua St John's - Former chairman of the ruling United Progressive Party, Leon ‘Chaku’ Symister, says any No-Confidence motion tabled in the House of Representatives against the leadership of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and the UPP Government will fail.

Speaking in on a local radio broadcast, Symister also dismissed suggestions that there are divisions within the ruling party.

“There have been rumours about divisions within the UPP. I can tell you categorically, that there are no divisions in the UPP.

There are also rumours about No-Confidence vote coming in parliament. We are confident that a No- Confidence vote will fail,” he declared.

The former chairman also dismissed what he turned ‘rumours’ about possible early general elections. “There are rumours of early general elections. These are just that, rumours. The Antigua Labour Party has survived on a platform of rumours and it will continue to do so in order to make itself politically relevant,” he stated dismissively.

Symister also stated that the UPP is readying itself for a period of political activism starting with a public rally that took place yesterday night at Thwaites Corner and a town hall meeting planned for next week.

He said prior to the 2004 general elections that party had brought out its supporters on Labour Day, but since the call from the Trade Union Congress for a more labour-oriented set of activities to mark Labour Day, the party had reduced its involvement. However, he announced that this will change this year.

“We believe that we are in such trying times that it is time for the people to be told once again the challenges the government is facing and that Antigua and Barbuda is in safe hands in these challenging times under the leadership of Dr.
Baldwin Spencer,” he noted.

He added that the party is excited about returning to political activity. “We decreased our level of activity and we are now raising them again,” Symister said.

On the question of candidates for general elections constitutionally due in 2014, Symister said the process of candidate selection is just getting started and that no decision has been taken in that regard.

“Every political party in a modern society would look to reshape its policies, reshape its personnel, reshape its programme, and of course, as time goes by, some politicians would have to leave the stage and others emerge,” he explained.

However, he noted that the wheels for this process are now being oiled with no  definitive decision on candidates for the various constituencies.

He added that where incumbents exist, there can be challenges as the UPP is a democratic party, while in those areas with no incumbents, then the field is wide open. He said the preparation for the process (of selection) is currently in gear.

I have only one problem. ALP is the one calling for the vote of no confidence. Do not misunterstand me at all. The vote of no confidence should eb ecoming from within the ranks of the UPP. Baldwin has placed the Power Plant and Fence Scandal like an albatros around the neck of his other ministers. There is no question about Baldwin's ability as a leader. There is only one question. Will his ministers who were elected by innocent Antiguans allow Baldwin to drag them down with him. I do not think that any of them have the testicular fortitude and the ethical will to challenge Baldwin on these matters.
I beleive that the no confidence motion will fail. In parliament the I's have it. But i do not think that in two years time the VOTE of no confidence in THEM will fail. But can we as a people afford 2 more years of Baldwin.... Shoul..... and Lovelle......

The mere fact we are talking about no confidence vote against the P.M is a reflection of his extremely poor leadership. Captain your ship is sinking. Captain the seas are rough. I understand from reliable sources that the P.M does not call weekly, monthly, or regular meetings with his cabinet. I think that he is afraid of having them all in the same place together. What type of managerial style the P. M is implementing? Stanford, before his demise called the P.M an inept leader. Members of his own cabinet openly question his leadership ability. Mainly Mr.xxxxe. & Mr. xxxxel. The people of any country deserves a strong leader @ all times. How did it come to this that a vast amount of the people are asking for a no confidence vote? Mr.Symister party affiliation cannot drown out the voices of the people. Mr. Spencer need a good adviser not some party clown towing the line for xerxonal xxxx. Mr. Spencer is in need of an objective clear thinking person to guide him. Without that he is doom. Shouting and making alot of noise like Mr. Symister is not going to cut it.

That’s right, no longer will we allow the ALP to monopolize Labour Day to spread their lies and propaganda while we sit back and allow them to do so. Those who are now critical of Chaku’s statements have no problem with the ALP using the AT&LU as a front on Labour Day for their propaganda purposes or uttered not a word when poor Stafford tried to keep the politics out of labour day but had to run for cover from the ALP hoards that took over his podium.

The UPP deliberately stop their activities on that day in an effort to allow the day to be a day for workers under the umbrella of the TUC but the union that support the ALP would have none of that and decided to divide the workers once again for political purposes. I guess it’s acceptable in the eyes of those that hate the government for the ALP to use the day for propaganda but it’s a sin for the UPP to seek to counter that.

I recall the cries that politics should be out of the union. Its clear from Chaku's statement it was all talk. I saw it for the sham it was when the TUC was formed. Yes it would be better if this was a reality. However, the unions at their foundation are tied to political parties and a change will require new unions which at their core are about workers (not only union employees) sucess

Do you know how you can tell Chaku is lying? His lips are moving. Great job Chaku go out there and baffle your supporters with BS. Aren't you the same person who help shout "we go lock dem up"? The ecconomy is shaky because your government didnt deliver on the investments you promised (boat load of investors waiting off shore) xxxle millions of dollars from the Treasurey, paid 7 million for a fence at Yasco, 47 million for a USED power plant, spent millions on sidewalks that have had to be dug up, over paid for buildings from your main UPP supporters. Chaku the list goes on. The misbehavior in Public Office is alarming and I hope that the last of the monies you have, you invest it in the prision because thats exactly where you all will go. I believe BxLLWIN is shaking in his boots and I do believe he knows that the handwriting is on the wall but, Bxllwin and his cohorts dont believe they will fall. I hope they call a snap election cause this will prove me right. This is the UPP's final days just like the PLM. Bye, Bye UPP.

Safe hands?

#3 Mr Sabruski » 2012-05-04 07:53

The only thing that the people need is a proper government. The two parties both have their fair share of the 'dunce element'. I personally think that we need to give the new generation a chance and get rid of the the old corrupt generation. Enough of the jumping up and down on the stage shouting and screaming at political rallies. The politicians need to calm down and speak to us as people, we need to understand what they are talking about. Vote of no confidence? I am confident in either side. It is time for the young guns to stand up and get going.

Dear PM BS & Co,

The Power Plant Scandal will be your undoing! Isn't a pity that all your surrogates are not even a little bit principled?

Winston Williams was so disgusting...le ss than a week of him saying he didn't know if the Power Plant was old or new (on public radio to boot) he stands up behind the microphone and says he is in support of it!

I think PM BS has all of them in his debt! So the UPP chief choir members have all got to fall in line and sing!

Question to Chaku

If the "vote of no confidence" fails in the Parliament does it mean that it has failed in the "public"? :-*
