Daniel- I Am Running

Daniel- I Am RunningAntigua St John's - The announcement this week that the ruling United Progressive Party (UPP) may be considering new candidates in several constituencies is meeting resistance from at least one of the incumbents affected by the decision.

Representative for St Phillip South Wilmoth Daniel said he intends to be a candidate in the next general election, constitutionally due in 2014. “It appears as though the leadership of the party does not want me on the ticket for the upcoming elections," he told Caribarena.com.

"I have not indicated to anyone (in the party leadership) that I am not running. It therefore seems to me that the announcement amounts to mere speculation on their part."

The one-time deputy prime minister, who appears to have fallen from grace in recent years, said if he had intentions not to run, then the first people to learn of this would have been his constituents in St Phillip South.

“I have not told my people anything, so if they (the leadership) want to impose someone in the constituency, then that’s a matter for them,” he said.

Daniel said he fully intends to run, "whether they want me or not". He declined further comment.

Daniel was responding to news reports on a local radio station where a senior UPP member reported that fresh faces would form part of the party’s ticket going into the 2014 general elections.

ZDK News quoted UPP Public Relations Officer Joanne Massiah as saying that changes are coming to the ruling party for the upcoming elections. She said the party is actively recruiting new candidates ahead of the 2014 poll.

She named St Phillip South, St Mary’s North, All Saints East and St Luke, St John’s City South, and St Peter as five constituencies where the party will likely name new candidates.

In three of these constituencies, the party’s candidates lost, but in the other two, All Saints East and St Luke, and St Phillip South, the UPP candidates won.

There has been talk that Chester Hughes, the member for All Saints East and St Luke, may switch constituencies, while the UPP is said to be considering another candidate for St Phillip South.

I honestly cannot blame the leadership for wanting to jettison Wilmoth Daniel, because he should have been more careful in what he said about the party of which he's a member. If he's going to be unhappy, if he's going to let his unhappiness spill over into his relationship with party members, and if he's going to sow the seeds for conflict within the group by bad talking the party,I support getting rid of him. This party doesn't need any kind of distraction as it gets ready for next election in 2014. The prime minister is making a prudent decision.

I think that the decision to get rid of Daniel has to do with a letter that it is reported to have written lately to BS regarding the old generators.

I had an experience one evening last yr,it was raining cats& dogs and coming out of big banana, there was this young boy,no older than 12/13 yrs, crouching between a wall ,with tears running down his face, i was trying to reach my car before another heavy downpour, but just had to turn back after what i saw began to register, I asked him what was wrong,he said these exact words. "ME MAMIE NAR WORK,AN NO FOOD IN DE HOUSE FU EAT,ME WANT $10 TO BUY SOMETHING FU ME AND ME LITTLE SISTER,SO ME CAN GO HOME OUT THE RAIN" Honestly that made me shed a tear, just the way he looked and sounded. After i gave him some money,he said thank you mam, maybe three or four times. This is the reality in antigua today,i have witnessed beggars on the street in the past, but most were young adults under the influence, right now it is people who are even working and cannot supply all their basic needs, this is real, and the sad part about it is the Govt seem quite oblivious to what is happening.

its time to go

#10 rupert j. » 2012-03-30 17:14

In any organization there comes a time when changes has to be made for the proper continuty of the same so if means that some people has to go so be it, are the individuals more important than the organization or country that they serve, is it that the perks that they enjoy so plentiful that they do not wish to give it up. One of the fastest way out is to have lost favor with the leader and the other members and aparently some of these persons have lost it so if it's time to step aside do so and maintain what little self respect that one has left.

Daniel the buffoon

#8 Tobi » 2012-03-30 16:05

Daniel's head size has no bearing on the amount of brains therein. Every time he now opens his mouth, he confirms this. He is not a team player and is an embar**ment and disappointment to all who hoped his youth and vigor would have brought change to the practices of corruption in government. Alas, he leads the way there. He's got to get off the UPP train, regardless of the political consequences.

Branch don't fall too far from the root!

#7 Dig It » 2012-03-30 12:38

As the saying goes "the branch don't fall too far from the root." MP Daniel's internal gripes with his party, especially, the PM or his "fallen from grace" doesn't undermine the fact that he was a part of a regime that "squandered" the tax payers money in the last eight years! Therefore, because he takes his donkey and rode off in the sunset with a nice "pension" and a lot of golden-marbles in xx xxxxt, Daniel needs to be accountable for all the "wastage" and "bad-decision" of his government! I personally couldn't careless if this "Auctioneer" runs or not because the real issue is the "economy" and setting up the environment for the people of this country could reap the benefits!

We must be really playing Dolly house here. After your previous admission as to bribery from one of your own,the disregard the Pm has shown towards the allegations and towards you also, should make you glad to get out from among them.It should not be a closed case, either way, someone should be disciplined, the person who bribed,or the accuser if its a lie,it should not be business as usual, unless we,re living in a giant circus, this is unacceptable.

Mr. Wilmoth Daniel, you can say what YOU want, but if the party does NOT choose you as a candidate to contest the 2014 elections, then you cannot RUN. Maybe you can try running INDEPENDENTLY, but you cannot claim to represent a party if the party nah choose you fu run jak.

I cannot just up and go to a UN meeting saying I represent Antigua if Antigua nah appoint me nar send me as its rep to the UN. Ya check?

Now, are you going to tell dis kuntree ah who de "fellow minister" be dat offer you de likkle bribe? :-*

Chase those crazy bump heads

#4 skyewill » 2012-03-30 07:57

A lot more than that need to go. UPP has been one major disappointment. I accutually met poor families without food in their home for the first time in my life in Antigua just last week and now even women and children are begging in the street and a ton of our brothers and sisters from other island are leaving or have left. What happened to people first?

It is time Wilmouth realize that it's time for him to leave the scene! He doesn't want to be a part of the UPP Government and bad mouths them all the time, well if he feels that way either challenge the leader or jump off the ship and enjoy his retirement.

When will our politicians learn to gracefully leave the stage? Take a leaf out of St. Luce's book.

fresh faces old thieves or new personalities old politics equals same old foolishness and incompetence. If Daniel dont run, the UPP will lose that seat.

Daniel should apologize to Dean. What you sow you reap. You kicked Dean Jonas out and now they are planning to kick you out too.

Scorpion sang a song some years ago. I think the name of the song is "Cage Bird sings". I am listening Wilmoth. This is how I see it. Wilmoth you have information that could prevent this whole country from falling into an ABBYS under the U.P.P. You have a duty as an Antiguan to not have that happen. Should you so allow this to happen, I will ** on your grave should you go to the great beyond before me.
