Murder Update- Business Owner Struggled with his Killers

E-mail

Murder Update- Business Owner Struggled with his Killers The businessman killed in Saturday’s armed robbery put up a struggle before one of his attackers pumped several bullets into his body, according to unofficial reports reaching Caribarena.

Brutally shot during the daylight robbery was Jamaican Raymond Chin, 35, who together with his wife, Jay, owned J Chin’s Top Notch, on Upper Church Street, opposite the old Catholic church.

According to informed sources, the attack was orchestrated by three masked bandits. One was the getaway driver while the other two robbed the store.

Chin, according to reports reaching Caribarena, resisted their demands and put up a fight. The getaway driver got out of the vehicle to help his partners.

Unconfirmed reports said it was the getaway driver who shot Chin, who died later at the Mount St John's Medical Centre.

One source told Caribarena the victim was shot as many as 15 times. The police did not confirm, but said several spent shells were removed from the scene.

According to the police, Chin's wife was in the bathroom at the time and came out after hearing an explosion.

She told the police she saw a man whose face was shielded by a hood leaving the store.

Further reports said the couple had been moving between their store and another establishment in St John’s transacting business, and could have been under surveillance by the criminals.

An undisclosed sum of cash was reported missing from the register.

The police are asking anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigation Department at 462-3913/14 or call Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS (8477).

Defying conventional wisdom, crime is not on the rise despite the miserable economy. Police records reveal that as the city faces a 10.3-percent unemployment rate and record numbers of homeless families, "the number of major crimes is continuing to fall this year in nearly every category," the Times reports.
So far this year, murder is down nearly 13 percent, to 413 from 473 at this time last year, while the numbers of rapes, robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies and car thefts have also fallen. There has also been a decline in shootings, people killed and wounded by gunfire.

tourism wussa dead now
written by roma, December 01, 2009
Maybe just maybe the Police Officers need an incentive to really produce good work. For instance, if they find x amount of guns in a week or month, they get a bonus. If they catch x amount of persons speeding they get a bonus etc, etc. For such a small country, it's hard to believe this kind of mess keeps getting worse and worse. How many tourist will really want to come to Antigua? I suggest that the government stop wasting money on tourism and spend that money on Agriculture if not, arwe go dead fu hungry.

What did this guy expect? Civilized treatment?

Anyone who comes from the outside and expects to be treated in a civilized fashion in a primitive, undeveloped, savage "country" should expect this treatment.

Let this be a lesson to anyone S****D enough to invest in Antigua.

Save your money, body and soul.

communication systems
written by tenman, November 30, 2009
I am really starting to doubt that there exists a proper communication system. The easy get away of robbers leads me to believe that if there is a system it is not working. Like "what if" I strongly believe that if the police had been on patrol and their communication systems were up and working that the killers would not have gotten way. I also find difficulty in seeing how if these things are in place, how someone could attempt to rob M&M service station and escape with no trace.

I saw the exact same thing! They were so casual with no sense of urgency... My mom and I thought the guy was already dead based on how the paramedics were moving but we couldnt understand why the paramedics were carrying a dead man and not the funeral home. Later to find out, he died at the hospital!
I do not want to get sick in Antigua AT ALL!!

written by what if?, November 30, 2009
After watching the news when the paremedics where removing Mr Chin fro the store it seem to me as if they just took there sweet time putting him in the Ambulanc. You did not even see them applying oxgen, No rush what so ever. When you have trama are you not suppose to move with speed? that was not the case here!!! Are these paremedics even in contact with the Trauma doctor via phone or cv radio when on the seen. this is what is done at other hospitals. what is the sence of having a stae of the art Hospitals, when infact " THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME"

Where were the police on a Satuday Afternoon
written by what if?, November 30, 2009
I have a great concern and it is about the Police. Are you telling me that Police were on patrol through out the streets and no body saw this getaway car to even see the license plate. the police could not even start pursute because they had no idea in which direction this car was going? If all of them (the police) would stop only patroling market Street, Redcliffe street, and oh let us not forget sending the same PLAIN CLOTHS POLICE OFFICER IN FRONT ABBOTTS JEWERLY STORE WEEK AFTER WEEK IT LOOK SOO OBVISIOUS AND DOWN BY THE DOCK WHERE THE CRUISE SHIP Pa*sENGERS COME OFF AT HERITAGE KEY IT WOULD SURELY HELP. POLICE START PATROLING ON FOOT ON BIKE ON EVERY STREET IN ST. JOHN'S!!!

Christopher Columbus
written by Wadadlian, November 30, 2009
We seem to have a modern day Christopher Columbus in Antigua. Instead of selling slaves and what not this new one is selling guns & ammunition. We need to catch them gun runners/sellers and put them away for a long time. In some parts of the world people get life for smugglin drugs and you don't see too many people going to those countries smugglin drugs. It is time we do the same for the gun & ammunition sellers and smugglers!

Badness Outta Style
written by Goodness, November 30, 2009
This is only gonna get NATIONAL attention when it happens to a prominent member of the Cabinet or ruling party!!! Why doesn't the PM come on television and speak to the youths? we should have a "Badness Outta Style" campaign going on here also in Antigua. I listened to the radio the other day and I heard a foolish DJ sending requests to "all his shotta friends who don't leave home with out them nine." he should of been terminated on the spot. Where else can someone go on radio and condone these acts? Not even in Jamaica where the songs originate do they get airplay. But our Radio owners and politicians either don't care or don't listen.

Act now you foolish politicians!!!
written by Caribman, November 30, 2009
I agree with G.L.B.B. We need to put much harder legislation in place for gun charges. Do these people realise that guns are killing people? Why no word from the government on the high rise in gun crimes? Why no community consultations? Why don't we have more officers on the road instead of behind desks pushing paper, watching tv and surfing the internet. We also got to get tuff on individuals who harbour these criminals because you should know what dangerous weapons are in your home & cars and all rent-a-car people should know whom they are renting vehicles to also. The time has long pa*sed for action and now it is WAY OUT OF CONTROLL!!!!

when ... when ... when???
written by George Lester Baldwin Bird, November 30, 2009
When are they gonna change the law that if you get caught with a gun it is mandatory 5-10 years and 1 year for every round of ammunition found also!!! Montreal had a real problem with Haitian gangs fighting Jamaican gangs and when they did the 1 year per ammunition allot of the gun related incidents went down significantly. I am sorry to say but they might have to make an example of Young Destroyer and also make him go around to schools and preach/sing against guns & violence!!! IT CAN"T BE BUSINESS AS USUAL ANYT MORE!!! People are killing you for your own money & things!!! Zero tolerence is needed now!!!

a cost
written by tenman, November 30, 2009
"perplexed" reading your response I find myself in agreement with you. I get the feeling that many people do not see money as a scare resource. They think that government can solve the problems by hiring or continuing what is basically a welfare program. When 70% of government revenues goes to paying wages that leave little to help provide tools for law enforcement. I hear people argue that job loss will lead to crime, however many people steal mainly out of greed not need. We need to find a way for government to free up the monies it spends on wages and be able to use those monies for more valuable purposes. Government must find a way to get those unneeded workers into value creating jobs in the private sector.

hoodies
written by lamanex, November 30, 2009
I was recently in Antigua and notice that in a country with constant hot temperature young men are wearing hoodies. There should be a law against such attire and anyone seen in them should be reported to the police since every crime or rape the perpetuator is wearing a hood to hide his face. Customs should also do more mandatory search of all luggage to find those guns being brought into the country.

How many of us are willing to be more vigilant and call the police when we see a suspicious vehicle or people who do not belong in our area. Many times some of these individuals are casing the area to see when is a good time to strike and if we the populous just ignore them and let them be, then we are the ones who pays. Look at the gas station incident, there are witnesses who said they saw the car parked up with the individuals and thought nothing of it.

We can type and type, complain and complain, talk and talk but until we begin to act ourselves then this situation in Antigua wil get worse. So very few of us right here on caribarena blog are willing to do more that just talk and complain. How many of us type meaningful suggestions, contact the police commissioner or any other police we know via phone, email, or letter to give them suggestions? How many of us are willing to start a neighborhood watch and actually stay up to monitor the neighborhood but instead would complain that we dont want to get shot.

For those who want the fast life do you really believe a job or good social programs will stop them from illegal gains, I think not.... If we as a society would not buying the stolen items from individuals with questionable character, if family members would turn them in, if we know see and know would stop hiding just maybe, the police can solve more crimes and that in it self would deter many of them from trying. But once again we want the government and the police to fix everything that is wrong without society, instead of us playing a more active roll. Some of us wont move or b*dge unless there is money in it for us.

While I am unable to a*sist this man with paying his bills, I can as a neighbor reach out to him with a meal daily as it does not cost that much more to cook for one more, and most days we have left overs we end up throwing away or feeding to a neigbor's dog. Now it is my hope that if more of us begin to help each other, who knows, maybe we can help take one criminal off the streets. And if each one helps one, I wonder what Antigua will be like. We calling on the goverment to do everything, we calling on the police to all things, what are we calling on each other to do?

suffering as well
written by Blossom, November 30, 2009
I am suffering as well. I am not out there killing or stealing ffrom anyone. Those friends and relatives who see their family members come home with large catch of money and know that they are in suspecting positions should report them. They are our start to settle this proplem. Then when they are caught no lawyer must plead for them to get less punishment than what they deserve.

He confessed that just to make ends meet he found that the only way for him to make money is to sell weed. Now some of you might find that to be a lame excuse but as he said, when he is hungry with no one to offer him food, he has to do what he can to eat because no one is giving him food. For months his electricity has been turned off and the other day the water went too. While I am not advocating the selling and smoking of pot, our police have bigger crimes that they need to solve so while I will give the weed seller a momentary reprieve, it just shows how easy a man can work against the law to survive.

There is no way to rehabilitate some one who does not want it and no amount of jobs or social programs will help those who are h**l bent on taking things that do not belong to them. Jail is the only place for them. The others, we as a society can help them. Instead of just calling on the police and the government, lets all reach out to our neighbors and help each other. Just yesterday I spoke to one of my neigbors.... a 36 deportee from the US with little education as he dropped out of high school. He is unable to find meaningful work so resorts to odd jobs when he can get them and burning coal just to get money to eat.

Antiguan unless someone or some persons are willing to invest in us by creating businesses and are willing to hire those with questionable past it will only get worse. The government cannot continue to function as a welfare job agency by hiring folks just for hiring sake, they already have a problem paying meeting current payroll.... and too many government workers have nothing to do all day. You are right people need jobs, people need monies to buy food and survive. There are two types of criminals out there.... The ones who want what is not theirs, who want to live the high lifestyle without working hard or honestly to attain it, and those who resort to criminal behaviors just to survive.

ANTIGUAN

.....my dear your point is valid but jobs or not they just have some undesirables that want to make a quick buck...and they don't care at what cost they get it....the television and the unsavory negative cultures that have filtered into our once peaceful shores and most importantly the parents that hids and cover for their spoilted untrained children are the cause of these happenings not just job situation!!

what we need
written by Antiguan, November 30, 2009
What the Government need to do is to create Jobs in the country for young old and in between. This is the only way we would be able to rid Antigua of so many crime, looking at the trend of crime you'd see the criminals are getting desperate........ The devil find work for Idle hands....

Hard to understand
written by Uni, November 30, 2009
How these criminals get all these guns is one thing, but what is being done to stop this rise in crime is another thing all together...I think that the police need to start doing more rades of the homes and hangout spots of suspected criminal or individuals suspected of possessing illegal fire arms. When the find these people they should charge them and have them spend a good amount of time in jail just for possession. This is unbecoming and if something is not done soon enough then the criminals might begins to rob and kill tourists if they have not stated yet...I doubt it we would like for the day to come when tourists wont come to Antigua for fear that they might be killed...
