Murder Update- Another Tourist Murder

E-mail

Murder Update- Another Tourist MurderThe police have now confirmed that the woman  killed on a beach close to Pigeon Point on Tuesday was an American tourist.

She is 30-year-old Nina Elizabeth Nilssen, who was discovered on Tuesday afternoon at Windward Bay with a stab wound to the neck.

The police told Caribarena this morning that there are a number of solid leads, but declined to reveal any details.

It does not appear however, that there is anyone under arrest.

Latest information has revealed that the woman was travelling aboard a yacht due to sail to neighbouring St Kitts soon.

A bag was found close to her body with personal documents inside.

The police are asking anyone with information to contact the Dockyard Police Station at 460-1002, the Criminal Investigation Department at 462-3913/14, or Crime Stoppers at 800-TIPS (8477). All information will be treated with the strictest of confidence.

This latest incident comes almost exactly a year after Australian boat captain Andrew Gollan was shot and killed in the presence of his girlfriend and child as they were walking home from dinner.

police officers

hiring AMERICAN Officers to work in Antigua so the can do what? the same thing? More training needs to be done. Antigua is not used to all these murders and unsolved crimes. Get the people who are there illegally out of the country. Make the laws more harsh so that criminals are dealt with severity. Life is prison for someone who has nothing to live for is a dream come true. Also the officers need to be recruited with seriousness and decent pay.

Antigua Police? What?
written by Kyle Varner, February 07, 2010
The Antiguan police are a terrible joke. They're a bunch of thugs. When I lived there I had to pay a police officer not to arrest a friend because my friend...gasp...asked to see his badge number! Another friend spent three days in jail for trying to stop a police officer from committing rape. After the cop failed to show up in court six times, the "a*sault on an officer" charges were dismissed against my friend.

Does anyone have any doubt that the serial rapist in Antigua is himself a police officer? THAT IS WHY THEY HAVEN'T CAUGHT HIM.

The police in Antigua are corrupt and quite frankly, evil. The people of Antigua don't seem to care...they stood by while the foreign officers brought in to clean up the police force were driven out of the country.

I have an idea: how about you put all the Antiguan police in jail, and hire American police officers to come and patrol your country!

Only way to deal with these scums
written by ANU resident, February 04, 2010
Is to inflict the same punishment on them (when and if it fits) right before a slow excruiating death. Only then will they stop and think before commiting such a crime. Disemboweling these scumbags sounds like a fresh start!. It's time all law abiding citizens stop taking all this bul!sh!t lying down!!

I lived there for 8 months... I was robbed twice while I was still sleeping! Police didn't do anything. If you ask me, everyone is in on it down there cause everyone knows everyone and they take advantage of tourists! I will never go back... EVER!

Do you have any pictures or video while you were there? Maybe you might have captured an image of this man that you might not know of. Maybe he was walking away or walk towards Pigeon point. PLEASE people check your pictures, video, and please help us find the person that has done this to our friend.

Simple answer
written by Cee, January 27, 2010
The answer to these terrible incidents is to get a decent police force. If the police are incapable of dealing with these paracites then get help from a competant foreign force who would probably have an arrest in days.

i boast with pride daily to my friends about our beautiful island of Antigua and then to get on the website and read about all these crimes being committed against locals and tourist alike is devasting. We can maken the excuse its the Guyanese or Jamaicans all we want the reality is its our islands reputation on the line. Without tourism Antigua will only face harder times and who will come to our island given these circumstances. We all need to get involved to bring positive change. Co-operate with police, report what you kow and let's try to restore our pride for Antigua and Antiguans and who dwell or visit our shores.

I use to live in Antigua and was robbed a few times. A few friends were held up by knife point and I have even heard of others being help up by gun point. Furthermore, with the number of murders and rapes this island is totally out of control. Yes there is crime everywhere in the world, but I was shocked to see how few people live on the island and how violent they are.

I don't know why there is so much crime in Antigua. One thing for sure don't expect the police to do anything about it. I have been to the police station in Antigua and they just gave a blank look to me. There are Antiguans that have stolen from me and I even provided names and numbers and the police did nothing. I'm so glad i left that place.

American Tourist
written by TBA, January 24, 2010
I just returned from Antigua on January 23 after vacationing for a week with my wife on the island. We were at Pigeon Beach Tuesday afternoon when the young lady was murdered. We spent the rest of the week looking over our shoulders and we stopped going to any secluded beaches with our rental car. We will not return to Antigua and we plan to share our experience with as many of friends as possible, so that they will understand the risks of going to Antigua.

To me what is most depressing is to read how people are worried about tourist trade or how we should punish the killer by hanging or reinstate capital punishment, around this young woman's death in Antigua more then anything else.

I would think that the drug issues, the crime, the mix of wealth brought in with tourism when others struggle would be more to the point of how the killer exists in the first place, and how this young woman could be on the other end of this whole dilemma. I think we continue to solve problems without handling the fact that "this is like this because that is like that." Reading Thich Nhat Hanh's poem "Call Me By My True Names," addresses more fully all our responsibility in the suffering around us and how it was possible for this lovely young person to die needlessly and even for this killer to exist.

We continue to think in good guys and bad guys rather than deal with the bigger picture which is not going to change much no matter how many people hung or punished.

there are crack heads on island...mentally ill wandering due to lack of services...really bad sorts wielding guns..does anyone mention the recent death of shopkeeper Raymond Chin, a recent Jamaican national who died defending his shop? Antigua has a crime problem...it's not paradise...Crime Stoppers is one vehicle for change..the police patrols are another..the island's societal framework is lacking services, educational support and a general demise in the value system...I used to enjoy Carnival..two years back was my last when we were scared to death of the gold teeth gangsta sorts..I felt like I was in Curacao...I remember Antigua in years past and miss those days..oh and by the way, there was murder back then. A local guy Bob was killed by my crazy rasta neighbor..cut of he head with a cutla*s..ya, crime is everywhere...rant over..

Step up Antigua
written by griffiths, January 21, 2010
Everyone is going to say "how dreadful" and "someone should do something" but the answer lies in the hands of us who live here.. Our island is small, everyone knows everyone- you know the bad men in your village, you know when a stranger comes around - find this murderer and hand him over quick - and do the same for the other bad men you turn a blind eye. Antigua need to get in the news for catching and locking up and deporting criminals- make the island so "hot" for the bad men they go elsewhere. Everyone has to actually do something- name names-ring Crimestoppers - or be very ashamed for doing nothing.

A bright and shinny star has fallen. From all of us at home, in Taos, NM we are going to miss you Nina. I am so glad to have gotten to know you the little that I had. I enjoyed your enthusiasm for your study of music at the university in California. I hope you are playing music with all the greats that have gone on before you. We love and will deeply miss you.

Here we go again...The government does not seem to realize that soon we wont have a tourism product. Personally i knew for quite sometime that tourismin antigua will exantually get to the point where we would be literally paying people to come and visit antigua...for whatever reasons, the supposed smart individuals making the decisions that matter the most to the country are still focussing all of their efforts towards revamping this blood stained industry, instead of creating a back up plan in the eventuality that we can no longer rely on tourism for our bread and b**ter. Its time to think of new ways to survive...

Nina was a wonderful person !!
written by Anthony, January 21, 2010
Nina was friend, a bright individual, caring, loving, talented, and respectful to all that is living. She just moved into a new place only a block away from me and I was looking forward to seeing her more often. She loved to see the beauty in this world. She was a kind and gentle soul. Since I've known Nina she never had a negative thing to say about anyone. She was always smiling & enjoying the company of her friends and family.
I am asking all of you to please help find the person who has taken her life. Anyone that might have a photo, or has any video footage of their stay there. You might think there is nothing there or there is nothing you can do, but any documentation of this person will help. I hope everyone that is reading this can open up their hearts and help us find this murder. Nina would be really thankful if you could help her. She would have invited you over for dinner to tell you "Thank You, for your help!". Nina, we love you !

Antigua has spent the last 30 years trying to become a pariah on the world stage, the "friendly island" act was their last card, it has now been played and trumped (in this case by reality) .

The only choices are beg the British to regain order or starve.

This is a very sad situation. Before we go pointing fingers however, let the police do what they are paid to do and see what happens. For all anyone knows, she could have been murdered by someone who does not even live here and already sailed away.

Another Sad Story
written by Foreign Observer, January 20, 2010
How will your nation market tourisim now? "365 Beaches - Come, you might just get killed on one!!"

Everyday there's another stain on Antigua. With all the tourists getting killed off, it may be time for the flies to find another main industry.

I'll get the rope. This girl was killed for whatever change she had in her pocket. There's now a sailing ship full of mourners instead of wedding guests. The murderer ended the life of a sweet and beautifull young lady, and ruined the lives of many others who were her friends and family. Not to mention the lives of all the residents of Antigua who will pay for this crime with a lot more than the money it takes to house a murderer in prison. There were many victims of this crime. Hanging just may be too good for the murderer.
