Police Want Licenses Revoked

Licenses RevokedSenior officials within the police want to see the license of anyone convicted of dangerous driving revoked.  This is according to Assistant Superintendent Joseph Hughes of the Traffic Department, the assumed architect of the initiative.

Antigua has already recorded its third fatality linked to dangerous driving this year, in comparison to 5 in total last year.

ASP Hughes plans to consult with the traffic chief about the idea.

In a message to drivers, he said, "All I am asking is you obey the traffic rules."

Hughes said accidents are not only costly to drivers, but also to victims and families, and weigh heavily on the health care system.

The problem with a law like this is that some people will get off scott free (because they know someone) and others will bear the full brunt of the law. Like everything else in Antigua, it's who you know.

What is needed is for the Transport Board to have fully qualified inspectors taking these people out on driving tests and to be strict about who they give a license to. Right now we have people out there driving vehicles who do not have the mental capability to be allowed in charge of a donkey. This should be part of the test, a mentality test should be included. People have to know about the relationship between speed and stopping distance, if they are travelling at 40mph, then they have to be 120' behind the vehicle that is in front. How many people here even know what 120' is ?? Not many, I see these morons driving at 10 or 20' behind the car in front of them, and then we wonder why there is so many of these 'shunt' type of accidents. As the law stands if you hit the car in front of you then the onus of blame is squarely on you, you were too close.

Agreed

The fact of the matter is many people don't respect the traffic rules in Antigua! And, these are the same people that will call all sort of names, if you dare say anything to them! We just can't continue to have people killed or injured in car accidents, when some of these accidents could be avoided! Having a driver's license is a privilege, and not a given right! If you're going to drive recklessly or drink and drive, your license should be suspended or revoked!

Thats a good idea. Also the insurance premium should be drastically increased on automobile owners who committs such infractions.

The traffic rules in Antigua&Barbuda should be revamped, but in an Anitguan culture and behavior considering the free spirited attitude of the youthfull opperators. It could be a great idea to design a driving course focusing more on safety to pedestrians and other motorist. I F Drivers continue to disregard the traffic laws ,and is caught more than once, their vehicle plates should be suspended six months to a year with a heavey fine plus doing the class all over again.Once you lose the use of your vehicle for this length of time you will be more safety contious.

I agree and also should add points on license. but then this means that they will need more radar guns, because just saying someone is speeding to me, is not sufficient enough to win the case in court. However, they will say they do not have any money to buy the radar.

This is a good revenue and safety precaution for the people.

revoke

#7 carvaa » 2011-01-31 07:06

If you put cops on the roadways to catch and seriously ticketed these drivers heavily, and i mean a four hundred dollars ticket for speeding or passing on a double line these drivers will learn.
This could be a big money making revenue for the government with all the speeders out there. Now if these drivers fail to pay these ticket fines and you happen to pull them over again with an outstanding ticket unpaid thats when you put them to sit in prison and revoke there license.
Traffi c police needs to be out there on the roadways driving up and down or park on the side, day and night and pulling over these drivers. You may even raise the ticket fine.

May be not point blank revoke, but something needs to be done. First lets look at one, two, or three year suspension for repeated/guilty offense. Then they have to reapply and given a limited drivers license. Meaning that they cannot drive between 10pm and 5am unless its work related for two years. After this they are allow to apply to remove all stipulations. If their record is clean throughout those periods then, the judge can make a decision to give them back full driving status. Now tell me this won't make the drivers think twice before driving above the speed limit because after all the next stage for them will be revocation.

Mr. Hughes is on to something. There should be a process before your license is totally revoked. First starting with heavy fines second moving on to license suspension third revocation for repeat offenders....Bu t he's on the right path....

I surprise that the insurance companies are not pushing to get all these reckless drivers of the roadways, for it is costing lot money to replace and repairs vehicles. They should be taking the lead on this issue. These knuckle head road users are literally killing people, and should have their driving, and vehicle registration privilege revoked.

let the masgistrate/jud ge decide

#2 tenman » 2011-01-31 02:10

I do not agree with this happening across the board. As exists now let the judge decide based on the severity and possibility of it happening again.Let me also suggest, if not in existence, that for certain driving offenses that mandatory retraining be called for and failure to successfully complete the cl** should result in drivers license being taken away (this is done in the US).
