Third Murder Reported for 2011

Third Murder Reported for 2011Justice Minister Dr Errol Cort has reacted sharply to news of another murder, the third for 2011. This followed word from the police that a 21 year old from Tindale Road had been shot to death near the Bendals Quarry at about 8:15 this morning (Tuesday).

No further details have so far been released.

Dr Cort, in a statement issued this afternoon, warned the perpetrators, and others engaged in violence, to "Stop and stop now!"

He warned, "These infringements of the law will not be tolerated, and when caught, you will face the full extent of the law."

The minister added, "The proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition MUST and WILL be stamped out of our society. The police will be redoubling their efforts in investigations, stop and search activities, as well as other forms of community policing, in a continued effort to curb this sudden spike in gun-related criminal activities taking place."

He called for residents to stay calm, and, most importantly, to observe and respect the rule of law.

Dr Cort at the same time commended the hardworking officers of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force for the good job that they have been doing, and encouraged them to continue to give of their best in protecting and securing citizens, residents, and visitors.

Both the police and the justice minister appealed for anyone with information to come forward immediately and contact the nearest police station or call the Criminal Investigation Department at 462-3913/14 or Crime Stoppers at 800-Tips.

In further information sent out by the police, a 38-year-old Federation Road, Gray's Farm resident has been charged for the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, and robbing a man and his son of their cell phones, jewelry, and cash on January 20 at Cooks Hill.

Two young men from Cashew Hill, ages 19 and 22, were also jointly charged for attempting to murder a 22 year old villager of the same address on January 18.

Wow, what can I say after those severe and terrifying words from Mr Cort I am handing in my guns, my cutlass and turning my back on crime.

Yeah, Right! Mr Cort you are and the PM are incompetent, if Stanford's was still paying a retainer to your law firm for you to live off no doubt we wouldn't hear anything from you.

Your out of your depth, inept and incompetent so go back to what your best at acting for foreigners in taking lxxxx from Antiguans.

You are to be blamed for a lot of the mess we are in today . We cannot finance our police force because of you recking our economy . You said things were great while we were busted . I do not believe or trust anything you say . Your aim was to become prime minister of Antigua . You spent our money in your area only and built a useless stadium in Johnson instead of YASCO . You know what difference that could have made for our youth . Thats why Lester Bird bang you like that . Mr. Pm we are waiting for the nuckle corner project to assist our Grays farm youth and keep them away from crime . MR. PM all Errol is concerned about is to snub at us and put our children behind bars. Tell him to invest some of the money he made from his friends ( Axx/ Standford ) in education at grays farm . Death Penalty

#40 Mike » 2011-01-27 05:49

Bring back the Death Penalty. The previous GG seemed to have been against it, but we know the present one shouldn't have any problems with it.

And let us start with the two young men that murdered all those people a couple years ago - the student home on vacation, the Middle East guy, the Jamaican shop-keeper and the two Welsh tourists.

Let them be an example. Young people will buck up when they see what happens to their peers.

Guns don't kill people ... People kill people

#39 The Scarlet Pimpernel » 2011-01-27 05:39

Just a short comment … modern crime fighting is a complex, sophisticated science that cannot be structured with antiquated methods, sporadic training and mediocre leadership. The prevailing criminological studies are in agreement that the complete criminal network of a society is generally between 5% -7% of the population, and infiltration is the most effective crime fighting strategy (“Just an Observer” is right). Community policing and random searches sound good and make good press blurbs, but are effective for fighting a particular, limited segment of the crime matrix.

Some crimes are planned and others are impulsive (reactionary); harsher penalties will not reduce murders, and other aggravated "offenses against the persons", because they are usually the result of impulsive action, where the perpetrator never took the time to think about consequences.

My way of helping, please post your plan, maybe we may be lucky enough to get a Patriot or two to help get it into the right hands.

patril would not have helped deter this crime or any crime?

#38 tenman » 2011-01-27 05:14

I have read where someone suggested that because this took place near a bushy area in Bendals police patrols would not have helped to prevent the crime. Though I agree that chances are the police would not be patrolling uninhabited areas I would think that if they are on patrol nearby (Antigua is simply 108 sq miles) that knowing they are present persons would think twice before acting. If they are nearby would they not be able to more quickly respond and apprehend the perpetrator? Persons need to pay attention that in the limited patrolling that does occur they are really drive by's and not police patrols. All that happens is that the police quickly drive through some communities with lights flashing and then head back to the station to continue whatever they were doing before. The key to knowing whether police patrols are effective is when you start to feel as if the police are really an active part of the community they serve

I will not attempt to give reasons why u have been soo unlucky, what i can tell you though i have am speaking from facts, persons who do not own business, or any particular positions own guns,I mean licensed ones, could it be a case of who you know? Another thing, where do the criminals get all this opportunity to steal weapons? not saying it do not happen, but on what scale, and if that,s the case, why are the persons who has the responsibility for securing these weapons, not been held responsible. From my experience i still say,too many persons has legal rights to own Guns, we are not in the wild wild west. I am getting ready to attend a funeral for someone who blew his brains out with a licensed Gun, what was his profession? An APUA employee.Maybe if he did not have a gun,he would have been alive today.

This is antiguan that is giving a proprosal for free.... the gov't past and present are willing to pay outsiders for this type of information that in the long run does not help as it is not based on our cultural factors etc. At least this person is willing, so again, why such hatred and venom?

We point fingers at the police but we need to look at ourselves. I can remember my mommy and grandmothers sending me to the store when I was a child and I had to go and come right back. The same thing after school no hanging out with friends. Parents want to be their child friend instead of been a parent. We as a community have to report suspicious activities to the police. People help the police solve crime by reporting what they saw. When we become more involved crime will decrease. When you point at some one remember more of your your fingers are point back at you.

@ Buss i totally agree with you.

The latest murder victim got shot on a hill side not even where an ambulance could go. How do we expect the police officers to patrol in places like these. Police officers are patrolling. There are so many police officers in unmarked vehicle and we don't know. so how are we gonna say they are not doing there jobs.

Some of these same gunmen are working people. He was on his way to buckleys and ended up in bushes far from where he was going.

USAF VET, a small arms expert, no criminal and a decorated hero. Still waiting. They will keep my money and will run me around. Google Antigua and guns. it's not the criminals (I should take that back) that's bringing in the guns maam. The criminals is stealing the weapons that are here. can you see a poor person buying a gun and shipping it to Antigua and bringing it through Customs? In my head I see visions or guns coming in by the crate load. Stocking up, ammunition depots with computerized inventory systems. "I DON'T KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE" I just think it. I just feel it, I hope that's not so. I believe in upholding the law. I support the Police 100% if they are also upholding the law. we the citizen is also responsible to do our share

I am concerned how easy it is to obtain a Gun licenses in Antigua, not saying that whoever perpetrated this crime had a licensed weapon, but listening to persons, there are lots of ordinary people out there who has legal weapons, for what and why?? Some of these people are highly Ignorant in they way of thinking, with a gun, they are like a Bomb just ticking away, extremely dangerous to say the least.

pol itical interference; While maintaining it's sovereignty, and rights as a member of the community of nations, Antigua has continued to exploit it's sovereignty by extending it's services outside it's territorial boundries, (internet gambling) and allowing it's financial institutions to masquerade as regulated and insured entities when there was neither regulation or insurance (SIB). Also Antigua feels free to decide what bilateral agreements it should or should not honour (Leroy King extradition).

supply chain disruption No problem here. If Antigua and Barbuda were to sink tomorrow, no describable trade would be disrupted

legal and regulatory risk. This criteria is entirely subjective. If you're sleezy enough to collect a lot of other peoples money and spend it on Cricket, a tacky restaurant, and buying the government of a tiny country, you have absolutely no risk as long as you're not dumb enough to leave, and get stuck in a Texas jail. If you invested with such a Knight, you're just as screwed as he is.

They don't see none of what you saying unless it hit them personally. People live nice in Antigua. Some people don't want no changes cause they don't know what will happen it they did things another way. One of the problem is that no matter who the government they seem to want the government to make profits. The more they tax the more they believe thay will have to live the good life. And there are others who really don't want anything. They happy just one day at a time. It is a culture. and it is what it is. By the way no one is listening to you guys. I hope you know that. do good to your fellow man, God will work it out. There have never been a bad person that ever won in the end. Trust in God. For what you sew is what you reep. If anyone with authority is reading this, i am willing to come back to Antigua and Barbuda to implement these system. They will save our country, well if we want to be saved and facilitate the plan.

Writing this i just got dejavu, weird, like i was sitting at the same place and typing the same thing to Dig it, seriously weird. However, I am confident it will drastically decrease crimes.

I do not believe that the customs is to be blamed for all the guns on the streets. I do know that our shores are porous given the fact that we do not have a large maritime force and adequate equipment to properly patrol our waters. However, my military instincts tells me that there is much more to it than that. I would propose that they do some inventory/audit s at the police evidence room to see what and how much of these weapons and ammunitions are being recycled through the system, and to also take an inventory of the army ammunition supply point to make sure that there is proper accountability of ammunition.

I think many share your frustration, but a return to capital punishment is regressive in so many ways. Antigua & Barbuda has exempted itself from the remaining handfull of countries who still use this barbaric practice and we should be proud to be disassociated.
Global consensus grows, that capital punishment has never proven itself a deterrent and there's lot's published to prove it.

If you look smarter than them then you know you idea will not even be looked at especially if you are from Antigua and you have black skin. This has been that way from Alp days to the present. wild wild west or gunsmoke

#5 Shocking » 2011-01-26 07:18

In a previous post this week I asked the question “wild wild west or gunsmoke” and someone tried to answer the question but got the question all wrong. The Wild Wild West is an American television series that ran on CBS for four seasons (104 episodes) from September 17, 1965 to April 4, 1969. And Gunsmoke was an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman MacDonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. These were only television serious but we are sort of looking like the old west in Antigua. I was trying to say the bandits were well taken care of by James West and Marshall Dillon and deputy Festus. We need that type of brave police heroes to take care of all those loose bandits in Antigua.

Lawlessness begets lawlessness

#4 justice » 2011-01-26 07:03

The goodly minister of National Security is playing the Ostrich game and pretending not to understand the correlation between crime and povertty (widespread unemployment) and the age old adage which explains the mirror effect of those at the top (monkey see, monkey do or follow the leader).
When the parliament of Antigua and Barbuda illegally suspends a member of the Senate without due process and without confirmation of his alledged infraction, then it is obvious that the rule of law has been thrown out and Antigua and Barbuda can now be declared 'the wild, wild west'.
How could the president of the senate preside over the suspension of a senator without herself hearing the comments attributed to the member? How could she allow a motion without specifics of the charge against the senator? The stage is set for lawnessness by our law makers. Quite ironic. Heaven help us. We could add the handling of the ABEC report to the mix and so many other illegal actions by those in charge.
