Bandits Beat Elderly Robbery Victim

Crime updateMasked bandits struck again on Wednesday at Wireless Road, laying in wait for an elderly resident and forcing him inside his home, then robbing him and escaping in his vehicle.

The 75 year old got home at about 1 pm, and was confronted by two gunmen who started beating him, and took his wallet, house keys, and Blackberry. The bandits then went inside and took a Citizen watch before leaving in the victim's silver-and-blue Toyota Liteace van, C6342.

Both assailants were described as about 5'7", light-skinned, and slim, dressed in dark hooded shirts with yellow caps, blue shorts, and black ski masks.

In other news, a 10 year old was arrested and charged for breaking into a Jennings home and allegedly stealing a Sony PSP player valued at $600, a Sylvania mp3 player valued at $100, and an Alcatel cell phone valued at $40 on January 10.

The police also reported that a fast food restaurant on Fort Road was targetted by thieves who took $130, five cases of leg quarters (valued at $280), and a microwave valued at $500. The break-in took place sometime between 10:30 pm on January 11 and 10 the following morning.

Two truck batteries were also stolen from a vehicle, G74, at the Bendals Quarry while it was parked there sometime between December 31, 2010 and January 2.

Meanwhile, a nurse at the Mount St John Medical Centre returned to the parking lot in front of the main entrance at 7 am on January 11 to find that someone had broken the front passenger window of her white Suzuki Ignis. She had left the car there at about 11 pm.

The police have also revealed that a post mortem on the body of the 44 year old from English Harbour who died on December 23, 2010 showed that Michael Sylvester Barton succumbed to acute cardio respiratory failure as a result of drowning due to cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart).

Officers are continuing their investigation into these matters, and appealed to any member of the public with information to come forward or call Crime Stoppers at 800-Tips (8477). Information provided will be handled with the strictest of confidentiality.

Right On W.T.F.!

W.T.F. hit it on the money! I've worked with the police in my area and we have a steady stream of repeat offenders that plague our neighbourhood. They are so predictable it is almost laughable if it weren't so serious. Our last conviction was of a person who had 23 prior convictions and had burgled the house of an elderly couple while they were home! Did the priors and robbery of an occupied home mean anything to the magistrate? No. The man received less than two years of which he is only likely to serve a fraction.

When will we start making and enforcing laws to protect those who follow the law vs. those who don't?

Protect the elderly

#8 Dig It » 2011-01-14 12:32

I am sad to hear, and wish the 75 year victim is okay, and is given the necessary medical assistance. Anyone that committed crime against the elderly, should be dealth with the full extent of the law. I call upon the powers to be to pass tougher legislation to protect the elderly. Those who committed a crime against the elderly shouldn't get away with slap on the wrist.

It's going to take more than Police involvement to make things better.

The lack of resources to allow for effective policing is the least of our problems. The court system here is the real obstacle in gaining control of the situation.

Pol icing only works well when the court system works well. Convicting those found guilty of crimes is THE ONLY SOLUTION.

We need to demand better from our Judges and Magistrates. For they are the ones in control of dealing with the ciminals in our own backyards.

Reg ardless of one's financial means, violent crime should be dealt with the utmost of serious consequences. Or else, the Wild West mentality will continue to prevail.

Watch out for 2011 it looks like it could be a bad year for us.

These bandits in Antigua not easy. I feel like that place is a real wild, western town with no sheriff to protect the townspeople. I better keep my so and so right where it is. Ah Fraid!

The van was recovered, but I doubt the couple's sense of safety will ever be repaired.

Too sad...

Give it a complete try

#2 my way of helping » 2011-01-14 05:27

My plan is still available, I notice Commissioner Browne ha implemented a part of my recommendation from my research paper and have town hall meetings every 3 months, even thou i requested every month in every village. However, it is a step forward and the other important parts must also be implemented immediately. The P.E.A.C.E and the F.R.A.N.C.I.S system will drastically decrease crime in the United Islands of Antiguan and Barbuda.

I suspect there are no comments to this story because this has now become to regular. I truly hope that the police get moving on the often repeated "community policing " idea. I am so tired of hearing about it can we see it in action?
