Cocaine Dealer Convicted and Fined

Convicted and FinedA Cedar Grove man was ordered to pay $60,000 upon conviction in the St John's Magistrate's Court this week for drug possession. The police reported that Orland Euriel Weekes, 39, of Cedar Grove, had been charged with possession of 4.75 lbs of cocaine, possession with intent to supply, and drug trafficking.

He pleaded guilty to the first two charges, and the third was dismissed.

Chief Magistrate Ivan Walters convicted him of possession with intent, and ordered that the fine be reduced by two-thirds, to $20,000.

Weekes was to pay $10,000 by December 7, and the other half by January 30. In default, he will serve six months in prison. He was arrested in Golden Grove on December 2.

The police are investigating a break-in at a school in Buckleys during which 14 laptop computers valued at $1,288 were taken, along with an Acer Astire desktop computer valued at $2,000.

The break-in happened sometime between 5 pm on December 3 and 7:50 am on December 6.

During another break-in at Body Pond Estate, thieves took another computer from a woman's home. The desktop's owner went to work at about 8:30 am on Monday, and cam back around 1:40 pm to find her home had been broken into.

A pair of black-and-white Addidas sneakers valued at $295 was also reported stolen.

There is no money to squander in jail time.

The seemingly intelligent thing to have do over the years would have been to take fines charged and beef up the penal system; jails, jail officers, police stations, police officers, vehicles, help start community watches… With the crime rate increase in the past 15 years or so, our criminals foreign and domestic would have completely rehabilitated the method by which the streets of Antigua are policed.

But. There is no money to squander once spent on the community.

Does anyone ever get jail time in Antigua for drug possession and/or trafficking? Doesn't seem so. It's probably one of the best locations on earth for a drug dealer to be caught. Contrast Antigua's penal system with Singapore and several other southeast Asian countries, where I believe punishments include the death penalty for relatively small amounts of drug posssession. In New York, long jail sentences were routinely imposed under the "Rockefeller laws", which were criticized by some as being overly harsh. While there has been a growing push in the US to legalize certain drugs, including marijuana, drug-related crimes (particularly trafficking) are still serious offences that incur harsh penalties. But in Antigua, these offences require little more than a "desk appearance" before a magistrate where one pays a relatively small fine and goes home.

Criminals are dumb, let us stop them now

Now the computer crimes should be easy to solve, what will they do with the computer? selling them or shipping them will result in apprehension if proper police work is carried out. The guy selling or giving away laptops.

You can't be serious

So another one of our Magistrates get's it wrong again. The police catch a dealer with 4.75 lbs of cocaine, with an obvious intent to litter our community with it, and the judge decides to lower the fine to a measly $20,000... and the criminal gets off without any jail time.

Look up an American "street value" calculator on how much 4.75lbs of cocaine is worth. It will blow your mind. Even the initial fine of $60,000 was low considering the value of "goods" he was caught with. To lower it to $20,000 and no jail time is an abuse of power and at the very least neglect of their duties as a magistrate to ensure the safety of the rest of us that are struggling and working hard to provide for our families.

Our Island is never going to get any better as long as the leaders in our justice system provide such leniency to the most serious of offenders. This wasn't a case of a little "weed" for personal use. It was the possession of one of the most dangerous and addictive drugs known.

If we can't count on our court system to execute justice then get ready for yet another year of high crime and violence.
