A Cedar Grove man was ordered to pay $60,000 upon conviction in the St John's Magistrate's Court this week for drug possession. The police reported that Orland Euriel Weekes, 39, of Cedar Grove, had been charged with possession of 4.75 lbs of cocaine, possession with intent to supply, and drug trafficking.
He pleaded guilty to the first two charges, and the third was dismissed.
Chief Magistrate Ivan Walters convicted him of possession with intent, and ordered that the fine be reduced by two-thirds, to $20,000.
Weekes was to pay $10,000 by December 7, and the other half by January 30. In default, he will serve six months in prison. He was arrested in Golden Grove on December 2.
The police are investigating a break-in at a school in Buckleys during which 14 laptop computers valued at $1,288 were taken, along with an Acer Astire desktop computer valued at $2,000.

A pair of black-and-white Addidas sneakers valued at $295 was also reported stolen.

HIGH CRIME LOW FINE
OUTOFANTIGUA
Unfortunately
The seemingly intelligent thing to have do over the years would have been to take fines charged and beef up the penal system; jails, jail officers, police stations, police officers, vehicles, help start community watches… With the crime rate increase in the past 15 years or so, our criminals foreign and domestic would have completely rehabilitated the method by which the streets of Antigua are policed.
But. There is no money to squander once spent on the community.

You can't be serious
Look up an American "street value" calculator on how much 4.75lbs of cocaine is worth. It will blow your mind. Even the initial fine of $60,000 was low considering the value of "goods" he was caught with. To lower it to $20,000 and no jail time is an abuse of power and at the very least neglect of their duties as a magistrate to ensure the safety of the rest of us that are struggling and working hard to provide for our families.
Our Island is never going to get any better as long as the leaders in our justice system provide such leniency to the most serious of offenders. This wasn't a case of a little "weed" for personal use. It was the possession of one of the most dangerous and addictive drugs known.
If we can't count on our court system to execute justice then get ready for yet another year of high crime and violence.
