Weapons Probe - Police Armory

Armory photoAntigua St. John's - An incident allegedly involving police officers, a gun club president regarding missing weapons from the police armory is far from over.

Police Spokesman Senior Sergent William Holder said on Tuesday that an active internal investigation is in progress to determine how weapons from The Police Armory were transferred from a former president Stephans Winter to new president Frank Theodore.

Winter, a local firearms dealer and current Chairman of the Police Service Commission, along with officers formerly attached to the police armory, have all been under investigations in what has been suspected to be inappropriate behavior.

Caribarena learnt in late 2012 of an ongoing internal investigation into the disappearance of several firearms from the police armory.

The police spokesman said the internal probe into the officers was still active.

Holder said he had no update at this time, and as it is an internal matter, an official statement could only come from the office of the Commissioner of Police.

Some members of the police force have reportedly been dissatisfied with the progress being made in comparison to previous probes involving members of the police service accused of crimes.

The apparent lack of expediency with which this case has been dealt with is cause for concern.

Efforts to reach Police Commissioner Vere Browne for a comment on the matter were unsuccessful.

Well let me say this, Antigua need a separate entity that has no ties to the Police commissioner that can be run by the head prosecutor known as internal affairs and seek justice. Browne need to be suspended with only half of his pay until the investigation is over. But wait Antigua is label as a cesspool of corrupted officials.

Shouldn't it be just as easy to get them back from the current President?

dead end

#18 Observer... » 2013-03-06 23:21

In our small Island where we are so closely linked to one another, situations like this will not go anywhere? Without making any accusations one knows the various relationships that existed between certain political figures and the Food City property sale. So here again I have to disappoint anyone who wants to believe that something might come out of this investigation. Case close, file lost or whatever. But ie nah go no weh. Dead end.

SlyThatGuy - get your facts straight

#17 tenman » 2013-03-06 22:17

SlyThatGuy, MP Benjamin is not a senator (member of the upper house). He is instead an elected parliamentarian (member of the lower house). He also serves on the opposition side and is not a government minister. If you were to examine the place where we inherited our current system, you will see the same practice where private members have the option of moonlighting (see www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2002/dec/01/uk.houseofcommons ** yes dated). The same thing happens currently in Australia www.theaustralian.com.au/news/breaking-news/sa-greens-to-push-ban-on-mps-moonlighting/story-fn3dxiwe-1226591513362. Once the person is doing a proper job and avoids conflicts, I don't see an issue.

Morris,That's a very interesting and thought provoking question you've asked. I think the reason why those types of things continue to go unchallenged is that those in a position to put a stop to them simply lack the ability to act with effectiveness. Something too which I often wonder about is how attorney Steadroy 'Cutie' Benjamin can work for the government in the capacity of senator and still be allowed to work independently as a lawyer(and even represent cases against the government he works for). This kind of stuff can only exist in Antigua & Barbuda because in a civilize country, he ether is a senator or a lawyer - not one instant he is a senator and the very next,he's a goddamn lawyer. The only thing I can say is responsible for that is incompetence.

You're absolutely,100 % correct, NOT...
the DEMONIC system which controls our Governing body loves thoughts such as yours, and of course, speech which is free can be foolish at times.
An investigation of this magnitude should never become a COLD CASE.
It involves the highest level of management which is responsible for National Security
What you have suggested is food for the PARASITIC NATURE of Our Society
I'll leave you with these words
..
HYPOCRITES AND PARASITES, WILL COME UP AND TAKE A BITE, and Satan loves blood; there's no wonder many in Our Society have become his meal ticket

What another embar**ment to the police force and government to have the chair of the police service commission under criminal investigation and still in his position. What a conflict of Internest. The chair must step aside until the investigation is over. But my friends, the investigation will never be over....the police chief will drag it out ad noseum...to protect the principals. When the police say the investigation is ongoing, it means they haven't got enough evidence to charge someone! They know what happened and who did what, but they don't have enough to charge. But still winters must resign until his name is cleared...

I don't see why Caribarena would want to report on this old case when it is fully aware that it has no new information to provide. Why waste the people's time with recycled news.

Antigua and Barbuda - A very strange place

#4 Dax Rebel » 2013-03-06 08:09

How can the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, with power to terminate the services of Police Officers or stifle promotion for active officers, be investigated by the Police, and not asked to relinquish his position as Chairman, is beyond me. In any democracy, the Chairman would have been asked to resign, pending the outcome of the investigations. That procedure is in place for Police Officers.

What happens next, if the Police decide to file criminal charges against their virtual employer? We are treading on a very slippery surface, and the lack of expediency in this strange saga ought to be evident to the PM and Minister of National Security who are mum on this very vexing issue.

Will the Task Force set-up by the Minister of National Security headed by a Captain of the Defense Force look into such matters? Will the ONDCP, which reports to the said Minister investigate this matter?

When "we" have POWER and AUTHORITY, "we" can always say TO HELL WITH WHAT THE PUBLIC THINKS. WE ARE IN CONTROL.

Until.....!

Did no one in "leadership position" in the Police Force ever consider Winter's PSC position and his business dealings to present conflicts of interest? Absolutely amazing how these type of things continue to go unchallenged at every level in ANU.

Why the slow pace, are they afraid that some I leadership positions could be implicated? This was/is a major breach in in operations and requires priority efforts. In case they forget, these guns can hold and fire lots of bullets that can kill many innocent people. Perhaps the fight to reduce the spate of gun crimes is against some of these very weapons.
