Several Robberies Reported Over the Weekend

Unlawful possession of 319.25 lbs of cannabisAntigua St. John's - The police were kept busy over the weekend responding to several reports of robberies and wounding.

In one incident, a 22-year-old Jennings man reported that he and his fiancé had been robbed by three men in the English Harbour area early Sunday morning.

They had reportedly been hanging out at a popular restaurant in the area, and had just used an ATM machine to get some money when three men approached them and started an argument. The victim was hit over the head, while someone robbed him of his money. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, a 34 year old from Willikies also reported that two men robbed him at gunpoint of his vehicle and money at a popular nightclub late Sunday night.

The man said he had been standing in the parking lot when someone held him at gunpoint and ordered him inside his vehicle. Another man got into the vehicle and they drove to a remote area, where they ordered him to get out and drove off.

He was also robbed of his cell phone, along with several important documents, and an undisclosed sum. The police are asking the public to help locate a black 2007 Toyota Yaris, A27979. Anyone with information was asked to contact the nearest police station, or call Crime Stoppers at 800-Tips (8477).

A 45 year old from Athill Street, Villa was hospitalised after he was beaten and robbed by three men near his home in the early hours of Saturday morning. He and his fiancé had been walking home on Athill Street when three young men brandishing knives approached them and demanded money.

A struggle ensued between the man and his attackers, and one of them stabbed him in his abdomen. He was then robbed of an undisclosed sum. Doctors at the hospital said the wound was not life threatening, but required surgery.

The police are also investigating several reports of wounding that led a number of people to seek medical attention at the Mount St John’s Medical Center.

A 15 years old boy from Whenner Road reported that he was wounded in the face by a group of young men. He and a friend had been walking along a road in the Golden Grove New Extension Area when a group of young men armed with sticks and stones began to attack his friend. He went to his friend’s assistance, and was struck across his face with a stone.

In a similar report, a 17 year old from Swetes reported that he had been walking along a by-road in the village on Saturday morning when he was attacked by an unknown man who chopped him in the head with a cutlass. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

A 23-year-old woman from South Street also had to seek medical attention at the Mount St Johns Medical Center after she was wounded by a man in the early hours of Saturday morning on Joseph Lane.

She said a man walked up to her and tried to talk to her in the club. She refused his requests, and he struck her in her face with a bottle, injuring her in her forehead, cheek, and neck. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors reported that the wounds were not life threatening, but required surgery.

Meanwhile, the police arrested and charged a number of people over the weekend for committing several drug-related offences and escaping lawful custody.

Kenroy Marshall, 30, of Jennings, was arrested and charged on Saturday for escaping lawful custody and failing to report to an immigration officer.

In addition, a 61-year-old man from Browne’s Avenue was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of 319.25 lbs of cannabis and possession with intent to transfer. The drugs carry an estimated street value of $650,500.

Similarly, a 57-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, both of St John’s Street, were jointly charged with possession of 300 g of cannabis and possession with intent to transfer.

The 21 year old was further charged with possession of 6.5 g of cannabis. These offences took place at around 3:15 pm on Saturday, after members of the Narcotics Department and the joint task force conducted an operation in the Point and Villa communities.

A 16 year old from Kentish Road was charged on Friday with possession of cannabis and cocaine after he was found with of 2 g of cannabis and 8 g of cocaine in Bolans.

Also, in two separate incidents, two Willikies men were arrested and charged for cultivation of cannabis. A 25 year old was charged after 17 plants were allegedly found on his premises, while a 22 year old was charged after 29 plants were found on his property.

My take on this is the Police and the Army should work together 24/7. If it be that more soldiers needs to be trained and employed to come up with a good number as the police force so be it. There often is a tendency where Police are seen patrolling only when a crime has been committed then you don't see their presence especially in the area anymore. We need Jesus now more than ever. I am tired of people crying down the Government because we are actually crying down ourselvs. We must not fail to remember that we are the Government. The persons elcted to run the country I would say is the Executive Body. The whole nation needs prayer. We need to get down on our knees daily and bring this nation of our before God. Let's do what we can do to protect this island of ours. Hanging definitly must come back on stream. If we have to have March to ear our views and le the ones who are over Justice/ Law hear us and act, well so be it.

Living in Antigua is like living in the States and the UK....What happen to this once beautiful Island. Police only know how to raid a house and collect a little little bag of weed. Yet the real crimals are out there making life hell for the Citizens of Antigua and her visitors. Its not the govemrnent fault. Back in the days when poeple had to wait six month for caine crop etc.., they were no crimal behaviour, and l am quite sure we were more penny less and hungry back then. The men and women who sign up to become police office thought at the time, Antigua is safe, no problem, but lets face it they are just normal people like you and l with no real training and no tools to do the job. Every thing we do in Antigua is still on paper, no linked computer system, no CT camera's in the street. Antigua will always be a playing field for crimals, cuz she makes it to easy. Antiguans...if you know who these people are, you better speak up, or you live to regret it!

sudden rash of crime

#14 worried » 2013-02-26 12:18

When you have a rash, you need to get some ointment. When you have a problem you need to find a solution. So, police officers need more training as far as surveillence and patrolling. The youth need to find something to do after they finish their schooling. The government need to create more jobs and opportunity for the employment of citizens. If the gov't does nothing, then the tourists will go somewhere else. Antigua has NEVER been like this before. Where there's a will there's a way. Let's not let the bad will of others lead Antigua in a bad way!

Economic growth is what we need, this cannot be accomplished by the police or defense force but by the private and public sector. How ever the economic state we are living in along with govt debt which we don't have the resources to pay or govt just doesn't want to pay have put us in a deep hole. We must work together to create jobs if we hope to reduce the misery of our citizens and the criminals. Let us not bash the govt or law enforcement but let us contribute to the economy and find ways reduce unemployment

Police always find the weed and cocaine. Is this because these people can be fined for such? I'm not one to be scared by the gun crimes that plague the nation but as a tourist destination we have to to protect out image. Not only that, what if a loved one is the victim of one of these crimes, this can make a good person fear for their lives or turn into an animal and take justice into their own hands. I must commend law enforcement for the work they are doing as I do see them out on the street more, but it will never be enough as crime is a business. How ever citizens of Antigua must feel free to walk the streets and by-roads of Antigua day/night/dawn without fear of being robbed/attacked .

The police station is less than 3oo yards from the ATM where the man was beaten and robbed in English Harbour. The cops were inside watching TV!
If we tried to look more incompentent we couldn't.

If drug possession was the only crime plaguing ANU I would give the Police an A for their effort; however, the same cannot be said when it comes to other crimes. The 90 day deadline is fast approaching, yet crime only seems to be escalating, and I am sure that there are many more crimes that are unreported. I wonder what Cort's speech would be at the end of the 90 days or what actions will be taken. My gosh, this is unbelievable.
All of this is happening while we have an army sitting on a compound getting paid to fight a notional enemy. In case they haven't notice, the rise in crime is the enemy.

Truth from the youth

#4 skyewill » 2013-02-26 07:29

Last night a young man who I know personally asked me for $5 to buy a bread. I gave it to hom. Hes said. "Skyewill, me almost have to consider selling weed or robbing people. I have no work and no money. This is a young man I know who normall work for a living and have never been known even to beg for money. Later last night I went to a friends home and she was not at home. She had left to walk another friend home because they were afraid to walk alone. The lady works part time and made just $200 EC over the last month. She did not have any money to buy food for her kids. Within just 3 - 4 hours a out 4 -5 people begged me. I am warning this government, please focus on job creation. Since 2002 I have been saying this and Now I believe it is too late. Unless something drastic happens, this place we call home will self distruct.

I hope we are not calling this place a tourist destination - this is what happens
When you fail to enforce your immigration laws. People time to protect yourself, you do not have a competent police force - time to dismiss the chief
of police.

scary

#1 carvaa » 2013-02-26 05:31

Can we have a march to get rid of this Commissioner of police? In his last address he guaranteed us with this new crime task force, we will see a reduction in these crimes by the middle of this month. Mr Browne the month is now ended, what say you?
Look at the number of crimes commited just this week-end, even at popular spots as night clubs and not one arrest. On the other hand it's all about cannabis, cannabis, the easiest and most popular arrest for our officers. Why don't we go after the true criminals and gun bandits that now have our 108sq ml on lock down, scared to leave our homes, scared to wear our jewelry, have to drive with our doors and windows lock, walk in fear when alone and now natives who often come home occasionally are now staying put or finding other countries to visit. This is truly scary.
