Cannabis in Ackee Cans Seized by ONDCP

Cannabis in Ackee CansAntigua St. John's - On Friday 15th February, 2013, Officers of the ONDCP conducted an operation at the V.C. Bird Int’l Airport, and arrested a 41 year old Jamaican female who had arrived on board a Caribbean Airways flight from Jamaica, with cannabis concealed in 24 cans of Ackee.

ONDCP officers on duty at the airport conducted a detailed search of her luggage, which revealed a cardboard box containing 24 factory sealed cans of Ackee with compressed cannabis inside.

All of the cans contained illegal drugs, which when weighed, amounted to 23.21 lbs with an estimated street value of approximately  ECD$90,000.00

The female is expected to make a court appearance on Tuesday 19th February, 2013 where she will answer charges of possession of cannabis, possession with intent to transfer, being concerned with the supply of cannabis, drug trafficking and importation.

The ONDCP remains committed in its effort to tackle drug trafficking on all fronts. It is not uncommon for drugs to arrive in Antigua through the airport using various methods of concealment. Drug traffickers continue to exploit every available avenue in their efforts to avoid detection.

Just to make a whole heap of money quickly, some people will risk their lives smuggling drugs. What a waste of freedom! And it's easy to see that this smuggler is not so smart. She probably doesn't even know that the two things that may have tipped off the agent and contributed to the bust are the weight of the marijuana sealed in the ackee can, which is less than actual ackee, and the way the can behaves when shaken. Ackee sealed in a can would behave similar to soup in a can when shaken and makes a sound;marijuana behaves more like cotton-soundles s.

Even if we do not legalize full scale which I dont see happening in the near future we should at least decriminalize the possession of small amounts. The simple reason is that we cannot afford the costs of enforcing marijuana laws at the expense of policing violent crimes. New York state just last week introduced a ticketing system where if one is arrested with small amounts of weed you are issued a warrant/ticket to appear before a judge to pay your fine. No jail time and you will not be saddled with a criminal record. I think this is a feasible first step for us from where we can revamp the archaic drug laws we now have on our books.

LEGALIZE IT

#22 Professor » 2013-02-18 19:13

Effects of Legalization:
1. TAX REVENUE FROM DISTRIBUTION & SALE
2. HUGE SAVINGS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, COURTS AND PRISON (MORE THAN HALF THE ARRESTS, CASES AND INMATES IN ANTIGUA)
3. PRICE OF THE PRODUCT WOULD BE SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED
4. SUBSTANTIALLY MORE TOURISTS
5. CREATION OF A VALUABLE AGRICULTURAL CASH CROP, INCLUDING TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE OF HYDROPONIC TECHNIQUES
6. REMOVAL OF THE CRIMINALITY, DELINQUENCY AND VIOLENCE ASSOCIATED WITH THE ILLEGAL ENTERPRISES
7. ADVERTIZING REVENUES
8. RAISE AWARENESS F THE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF MARIJUANA
9. CREATION OF THE RELATED HEMP INDUSTRY
10. MARIJUANA IS A 100 BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY ... SUBSTANTIALLY BIGGER THAN INTERNET GAMBLING
11. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, PARTICULAR LAT NIGHT RESTAURANTS, BECAUSE ONE OF THE DELIGHTFUL SIDE EFFECTS OF MRIJUANA SMOKING IS "THE MUNCHIES."

Sirier48, I suggest you do some research, before you comment on marijuana again.
Cannabis pacifies, Alcohol KILLS!!!
Maybe you should light up a lickle Tampi and see for yourself, just make sure you chain up the fridge, and get a big bottle of water ready 8)
More than half the world has either legalised or decriminalised the recreational use of marijuana, and many more countries are considering doing so.

There is not corelations between smoking and crime in opposed to those who don't smoke. By the way most people do not know this but one of my degrees is a BS in Psychology with Substance abuse as the emphasis/focus so you know I have done tons of research and to date I have found nothing. In fact our research found smokers are very mellow and peaceful in general. What I like most about hemp is its industrial qualities. I import clothing from Africa made from hemp. It is good for people who can not wear synthetic material because of an alergic reaction. When I went to Amsterdam I was suprised to see so many cafe's selling various brands and flavors of the herb. I believe the agriculture ministry should investigate to see if we can develope a medical grade for export to US and Canadian and EU markets...serio usly.

I did not think you had it in you but you are 100% right. Just a few week ago I saw a can of hemp tea in the supermarket. We need to get ahead of the curve on this on. A major economic boost. You see we are a bunch of hypocrites. some of those same ministers in government are serious puffers and nobody smoke more than police and soldiers.

@SIRIER48 ... LEGALIZE IT FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

#16 Professor » 2013-02-18 17:41

I HAVE TO INFORM YOU THAT THE SLIPPERY SLOPE (LOGICAL FALACY)) ARGUMENT AS IT RELATES TO RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA USE HAS BEEN DEBUNKED BY SEVERAL REPUTABLE STUDIES THAT HAVE SHOWN THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF MARIJUANA USERS HAVE NEVER USED OTHER ILLEGAL DRUGS. MANY OF THESE STUDIES WERE FEATURED PROMINENTLY IN THE DEBATE OVER COLORADO'S LEGALIZATION OF RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA USE.

THERE IS GROUP OF USERS OF HARD DRUGS, WHO ALSO SMOKE MARIJUANA, BUT THEY ARE NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE CORE GROUP OF MARIJUANA ONLY SMOKERS.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MARIJUANA SMOKERS IN THE CARIBBEAN IS AN EXAMPLE OF PERSONS WHO GENERALLY DO NOT ENGAGE IN THE USE OF HARD DRUGS.

ONLIKE MANY DRUGS THAT START OFF AS PLANTS AND HAVE TO BE PROCESSED TO CREATE THE DANGEROUS END PRODUCT, MARIJUANA IS USED IN A VERY NATURAL STATE ... IT IS SIMPLY CURED AND DRIED. MARIJUANA SMOKERS ARE SMOKING A PLANT THAT IS LESS DANGEROUS THAN TOBACCO.

#15 SIRIER48 » 2013-02-18 16:41

Lord have mercy you might have a point, but as of now it is illegal in Anu, so I say, lock them up and throw away the keys. what kind of a society of weed smokers are you asking us to be. it goes from weed to crack to heroin and crime escalates to feed these habits. Cant you see where the country is already? What we need is a drug free ANTIGUA.

Legalize it

#13 Lord Have Mercy » 2013-02-18 12:00

It is nothing short of a travesty, the amount of money that law enforcement spends on investigating, interdicting, arresting prosecuting and imprisoning persons for marijuana related ofenses.

As a substance that is clearly less dangerous than alchohol, it should have been legalized a long time ago. We need to stop waiting for permission on how to run our country.

A tourism destination where persons could smoke marijuana legally, bould be a tremendous boost to our economy. We have several countries in the world , the primary one being Holland (Amsterdam) more than 20 states in the US (the most recent being Colarado ) that have proven my point.

I'd like the time to say thanks to the ONDCP and all other law enforcement for their efforts in this drug bust. Often, their failures and inadequacies provide us with a target-rich environment for expressing our disappointment and concern with goings-on in Antigua. So, in equal measure, when they succeed, I feel it only fitting that they be commended. Press on, ladies and gentlemen

You do realize that amount of contraband is being consumed in antigua. all this shows you once you have a market here it will continue to grow. The average herb smoker has increased in the past 10 years. Some are highly educated and continue to be good people in the community. Is there any correlation between Herb smoking and criminal behavior. If not de-criminilize and control

Marijuana should be decriminalized to stop this smuggling and reduced other crime. Afterall marijuana was made illegal because of political and profiteering reasons. If you have 10mins watch these to vdeos

It is about time that Antiguans realize that those people are destroying us . When they are finished they will go back to Jamaica and make it better. Antiguans will never ever be able to do such an awful thing in Jamaica. Antiguans please wake up and put your country first. We were living very well without them,we do not really need them ,they are down grading us. Please remember in all the land in east or west I love my native land the best. We are always a loving careing group of people and we are letting it slip away.

Just a reminder not to voice any negative comments on our Caricom brothers and sisters or else the full wrath of the thought police will be brought down upon you and your character will be brought into question. Self loathing and xenophobic are some of the terms you'll have slung at you.
Please turn a blind eye to the drug smuggling, prostitution, shanty towns and noise pollution that has overcome this 'small island'.
Haiti is an exception by the way, we have already imposed visa sanctions on them despite the fact that they have no history of criminal or anti-social behaviour. Maybe it's because they are a shade darker in complexion so don't qualify as 'looking like us". (Haiti should team up with Shanique Myrie and take us all to the CCJ but that's another story)
You are encouraged however to view the tourists/invest ors from the USA, EU Canada and China who keep our economy afloat with a healthy view of suspicion and disdain. They are after all only here with one goal in mind - to re-colonize us and to make matters worse they don't look like us.

TRADE SANCTIONS

#7 Watchman » 2013-02-18 09:43

This is a very serious matter. It demonstrates that there is a very sophisticated operation in Jamaica. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the Government of Jamaica has a responsibility to our communities in their attempts to smash this operation. The lady must fill in the blanks. If the Ja, Govt, wont cooperate, we should place a temporary ban on certain products from JA. that could be concealing canabis. The ANU Govt. should report this matter to the Caricom Secretariat and get them on board by putting pressure on the JA.Govt, to hunt down, find and destroy this criminal manufacturing facility. Its product will destroy the youths of the caribbean.

She was allowed to pass through the airport in JA because the drug smuggling rings permeate all levels of society and government and I might add sophisticated as these cans appeared to have been sealed.
I believe however that the ONDCP were tipped off. This is how these criminals operate - they send two or three mules into the country and tip off the authorities about one (usually a poor desperate woman). So while the officers attention are focused on the fall mule the other/s walk through customs unnoticed.

This almost weekly seizure of drugs on CA flights from Jamaica is way past ridiculous. I cannot understand how all of this drugs keep passing Jamaican officials undetected (every week) unless someone there is either getting paid or in charge of this scheme. Perhaps ANU should consider putting sanctions against JA and see what effects that would have.

In Antigua People of that high position do not get investigated. It is against the law to arrest a high level government official. You as a poor man can not say anything or they file law suits against you and will spend too much money to stop you. How dare you accuse the PS who like Jesus is immune. Yest that case was swept under the carpet by the broom of a legal threat. Only poor people are allowed to go to jail in Antigua.
