Six Years for Denzil Howell

Six Years for Denzil HowellAntigua St. John's - The man accused of killing Nevaldo Quintano was sentenced when he appeared in the High Court before Chief Justice Keith Thom.

Zenroy Denzil Howell previously pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter in the stabbing death of the Cuban doctor. The incident occurred on Feb. 16, 2010.

According to reports the then 16 year-old youth was walking on the All Saints Road at approximately 7:30pm on said date when he met the Quintano and was promised games for a PSP he had. He subsequently accompanied the man to his Willy Dee’s apartment.

It is said that when Howell was invited to enter the man’s dwelling he refused, saying he would stay at the door, since he was only there to collect the games. The deceased however convinced him to enter adding there were nosey neighbours around. The man is said to have locked the door once he was inside.

The youth said he was playing the games when he noticed that the man was trying to rub his body against his, and suspecting that he was about to be violated wrestled with him. Howell said he then used a knife he was carrying to stab Quintano three times before fleeing from the apartment.

The post mortem examination however revealed that there were six penetrating wounds to the right inner chest and four lacerations on other parts of his body.

In offering mitigating facts attorney for the defendant Delicia Thomas told the court that Howell did not have the benefit of parental guidance, since both his parents are dead. The youth was abandoned at the hospital and it was an aunt who took care of him until he was four. The relative however left the jurisdiction leaving him in the care of a cousin. Following this he lived with three other relatives, a homeless shelter and the boys’ training school, before living on the streets.

Thomas also told the court that Howell had not gone to the apartment to commit a crime, since he had left his shoes outside before entering the man’s place; also adding that a neighbour had heard them conversing before the incident.

The 19 year-old also expressed remorse and apologised to the court, the police and to the victim’s family.

He was sentenced to six years in prison with time served taken into consideration. He has been on remand since June 2010.

The Poor Have Dignity Too

#12 CG » 2013-02-18 15:51

For all of those who are saying that the penalty is too lenient...what if it was your child that had to defend themselves from a sex predator.? First of all, why is a grown doctor allegedly inviting a young boy into his home like that? He knew the kid was street smart...wasn't he afraid? Also, if the doctor felt that the neighbors were nosey, then that was all the more reason to pass the video games through the door instead of inviting the young man in. That's why the Bible says to shun the appearance of evil. Then neighbors would have thought worse if the young man went inside as opposed to stay on the steps.

And why six stabs? Because as a woman, if someone tried to rape me, I would keep stabbing the ** until my hand fell off. It's anger that causes the person to keep stabbing. The young man trusted this doctor and he allegedly only wanted to take advantage of him because he is poor and homeless. Even the poor and homeless have their self respect.

If the reason for the killing the doctor as stated in the article is true. Then in the interest of fairness. The youngman should be freed taken into consideration time served.
These kind of people should keep their nasty lifestyles to themselves and their kind and not force it on normal ppl. I really dont have a problem with their choices but as me granny would say "go and find you own b.u.l.l".. Dont prey on ppl like that. Just sickening.

Your comments were excellent ones. You asked the question, why carry a knife. Maybe it’s because you have to have a way in Antigua to protect yourself in case someone try to rape you The other question why not run. He reacted to the conditioning our society provided for him. I don't know about you but If a person of the same sex as me touch me inappropriately he will be hurt. I wonder how the court would react if he was a 16 year old girl. Following this young man’s past, I find him to be a classic case of child abuse and it conditioning. Our cultural norms also played an important role and I believe he was repulsed at the alleged act. According to what I have read about this story, it was a classic predatory behavior that started this mess. That boy did not leave his home to go commit any crime. He was a victim who used excessive force to protect himself. Growing up the way he did and still at an age of mental development made his situation volatile. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge which is a trick by a system where the attorney may have been appointed because he had no means to pay. They simply took the path of least resistance.

Only Six Years

#9 Future P.M. » 2013-02-17 07:38

Something is totally wrong with our system of justice. I could not give a hoot what defence strategy the accused concocted.. after all, dead men tell no tales.. A life was taken.. Manslaughter is applicable when the intention was not to kill. However, ten stabs and cuts tell a different story. Just pulling a knife on the man, if his story has any merit, would have been enough. The Hispanic man should have backed off. Are we looking at a deeper picture here? A Hispanic sex-worker was also stabbed to death and the perp got ONLY SIX YEARS.. Is there now some sort of discrimination towards Hispanic victims? Armed robbers get 15 to 20 years in jail. Rapists get eight to 18 years.. and murderers who kill Hispanics? ONLY SIX YEARS... Justice guidelines? Gimme an asprin.. Why was Ron Gederon given 25 years then? He too said that he did not intend to kill Monique Ramsay..but got the death sentence, which was later commuted to 25 years or about 19 of our years... LAWD?? Help our Judges..

How do people know what is true or not true about this case? How do we know what to believe or not to believe about this case? Remember, there are always two sides to a story, but all we will ever have the benefit of hearing is just one side of the story as told by this 16-year-old juvenile delinquent who carries a knife around with him - the other side may be totally different but, unfortunate ly,Mr.Quintano is not here to tell his version. All I say is this:Given the background of this young man, this killing - his first violent crime - should well be considered to be the harbinger of future things from him,and so the authorities need to keep a keen eye on him.

What's wrong with this picture?

#7 Cojo » 2013-02-16 09:44

WTF?

So let me see if I get this straight...a pexxxxxe attacked a youth. The youth then defended himself by fatally stabbing his attacker and the Antiguan justice system punishes the victim by sentencing him for 6 years in jail??? I thinking that the pxxxxxe got what he deserved and judge in this case should serve 6yrs in jail for being an ixiot!!!

Are you Ph*kn kidding me? Six years for killing someone? If it is self defense like I believe it might be in this case, set the man free. On what grounds are you jailing him then?

But if you are gonna sentence him for the crime then let the punish speaks to the severity of the crime; make an example.

I have two questions:

1. Why was he carrying a knife?
2. Why didn't he run for the doors and scream for help?

Oh and 6 stabssssss..

Error Caught and his team has failed the people of A&B again.

response to : sentenced as juvenile

#2 nix » 2013-02-16 05:01

It must not be forgotten that a man's life was taken.....while it is true that it seems as though he was about to be molested and needed to defend himself....the amount of times the decease was stabbed is also taken into consideration during sentencing..... I think it was a fair sentencing....t he young man will be out in about three years time

He should have been sentenced as a Juvenile

#1 From The Sideline » 2013-02-15 22:13

Given what I have hearrd of the story this youngman is a juvenile and should have been sentence as such and furhter I believe there was a case of self defence. So he should have been freed. Dead man can tell no tale. I should never have been placed in prison at that young age. Trust me he will not come out and stay on the right path. Our judicial system is broken. he should have had the benefit of the doubt. And he pleaded guilty which his lawyer is in fact guilty for, if you listen to his story. I guess a richman shooting a man on his yard will not go to jail for manslaughter. Cause deadman can tell no tale.
