Gravy Shot and Wounded

Laban Benjamin'Gravy' - Business Focus photoAntigua St. John's -Popular comedian and business man Laban Benjamin better know as Gravy is in a stable condition nursing a gunshot wound to his chest following an encounter with masked gunmen last evening at about 9:30pm.

Reports reaching Caribarena suggest that Gravy had just returned to his home in the Mock Pond area from the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium when he was accosted by three masked gunmen.

According to reports and confirmed information from the Police, Gravy offered some resistance to the criminals as they attempted to search him and was struck in the face at which time he shouted for murder.

One of the gunmen reportedly fired a shot which hit Gravy in the chest.

Police say they have no eyewitness to the incident currently and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

Meanwhile in a press statement Police said the gunmen appeared from nearby bushes near the victims home.

Following the attack Gravy was rushed to the Mount St. Johns Medical Center by the EMS, where doctors reported that his condition is stable.

Investigations into the matter continue, and persons with information are being asked to contact the All Saints Police Station, or call Crime Stoppers at 800-Tips (8477).

In 2004 masked gunmen attacked Gravy while he was on his way home from his place of business in St. John's.

At the time he sustained gunshot injuries to his hand.

The victim is well known for his public performances at cricket events as well as business activities in the city.

The Entertainer & Entrepreneur Meets The Armed Bandits!

#40 John French II » 2013-02-10 18:24

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! My sincere hope for a speedy & fully recovery of this Antiguan & Barbudan Eccentric Icon. Best wishes to Gravy, his family, close associates & friends.
This commenter looks to many such as Pompey for guidance but this appears to be targeted.
Gravy, The Entertainer & Entrepreneur is known far & wide. His attack by these Armed Bandits was intended to send a most chilling message at home & abroad.
Travel Advisories: Quote:
UK -There has been an overall increase in crime ... including gun crime & murder which has affected British Nationals.
US- Violent crimes, including rape & murder, do occur, ... tourists have been targeted.
CAN- Petty crime & armed assaults against tourists can occur & incidents sometimes involve firearms.
We as a people can not allow these Depraved Bandits to have Distrau t Residents Cry or to have Gun Crimes - Citizens & Minister Rattled by this Continuous & Never Ending Cycle of Violenc e to Society and kill A&B's Golden Goose. Encourage all to reread Pompey's Captioned Articles which provide analyses & recommendations.
Oh Gad! Pray Fuh Gravy!

Antigua is small and most of these crimes are committed by more than one individual. Somebody knows something other than these people who are walking around committing these heinous crimes as whatever is stolen has to be passed to someone to get rid of or these criminal acts would not be worthwhile. Find the fences and if they wont talk charge them with the crimes. Get well soon Gravy. I also find the public outcry especially for someone of Gravy's stature was quite lukewarm. I hope it has not become a situation where we are developing a sense of apathy ie we have come to believe that these acts are a part of ever day life.

Prayers and well wishes go out to gravy. Now, I read alot of the responses and we are citizens and concerned people here, heres what I propose and I cannot see why it has not been done.

First, the very fact that he was shot is the worst thing to read, meaning??
He probably could have died, so the criminals should be addressed as murderers, treated that way and dealt with that way.

If I had the ability as a leader, I will have a public announcement to the people of antigua and barbuda that there is a law immediately, any one found committing a crime with a gun, knife or any item considered dangerous will immediately be sent to jail for 200 years, consideration will ONLY be giving for parole AFTER serving 150 years. If you are in the possesion of an illegal gun or weapon, then it is considered INTENT to COMMIT, so, that charge is 150 years. stick to it and im sure the society would clean up, tourism will improve too

The solution (part II)

#35 Concerned » 2013-02-09 10:50

The youths need to be monitored and special programs need to be put in place to do this. Gang behavior and truancy need to be attacked as you would treat an infestation of ** because that is what it is. Our youth have been corrupted. Every deported criminal needs to be monitored when they set foot on the island. Something caused the crime rate to spike, it is not just a 'way of the world' thing. I am tired of hearing people say "oh that's just how it is nowadays'. This kind of thinking is why we are where we are. We became complacent! Alas, there is hope! We need to reign in crime. All that needs to be done is to follow the example of places like New York. Getting tough means raids on suspects, imposing tougher gun laws, offering rewards to the public for information, obliterating gangs, and imposing tougher punishment on criminals. How about imposing a 3 strikes you're out program? Find the money and fix the problem!

The solution

#34 Concerned » 2013-02-09 10:50

Once again I find myself writing in this blog under terrible circumstances and once again I reiterate that the source of the problem is juvenile delinquency. We cannot keep pointing fingers at foreigners, political parties, or even deportees. We have to point the finger at ourselves too because we have seen the problems settle in, and we have let them permeate to this disgusting level. I am an Antiguan who lives abroad and was astonished to see the level of delinquency when I recently visited during the carnival season. I voiced my opinion and was continually told, 'Antigua nice, ebryting arite man'.

commissioners should be chosen inhouse

#32 shogun » 2013-02-09 10:20

I am not even on the island but am so damn angry right now. A new commissioner should be chosen by votes in force, that is the only way you can get close to a likable commissioner and one who no political party can control....thin k of it seriously. how in the tail you can control country when you cant control the force? seriously commissioner!!! !! this is the 21st century and you with your stupid and antiquated policing tactics. When people shooting people like GRAVY, a world renown comedian icon, change your game and think like the criminals. Send officers deep deep deep undercover..... .if you don't know how to send officers deep deep deep undercover(whic h honestly i don't think you understand) then you should already be deep deep deep into retirement..... ..and learn to respect and trust your officers for god sake man!!!! you think this job is ordinary or what....go on a few days retreat with few of your BEST officers, not friends and political allies and come up with a master anti-crime plan and implement it forthwith before the end of this month. Make us feel safe again commissioner, make us feel safe again.

#31 Helen Carr » 2013-02-09 09:44

Where do Antiguans stand in this critical moments? This crime episodes have now escalated into sitcoms. Antiguans have never been afraid to leave our doors open and go anywhere, we have never been afraid to walk any time any hour day or night, we were never been afraid to have all night parties on any beaches and we were never afraid to sleep in our homes, or to open our doors to anyone known or unknown, but due to lack of concern for Antiguans, the governments have taken in all those foreingers and deportees from USA, UK, Canada, and other countries who are looking to Antigua as a gateway to get out, instead of clamping down on these criminals that Antiguans can live in peace that we were accustomed to they are letting them running loose creating havoc and mayhem in Antigua due to greed.

I believe your criminals are the illegal foreiners you accomodate in your country. Get them out. If they were productive in their home country they would not be in mine. They are poor and broke criminals and would rather hurt strangers than their own home people. Your government need to change the immigrations rules. Do the maths, crime increased a lot with the current influx of immigrants.

#21 Daughter of the Soil » 2013-02-08 14:31

I sympathize with "Gravy" who is a victim once again. He seems to be a very peaceful man. Apparently, the citizens of Antigua are forced to live in fear because of these heartless perpetrators. This is not a good way to live. It seems that these men made up their minds to steal instead of working for a living. I keep hearing, "Times are hard." It would not hurt to plant some crops or try to make a honest living. I intend to return to my native land one day and I will not be victimized. If the cops in Antigua cannot take care of the criminals I will protect myself. We need to stand up to these criminals and clean up our island paradise. The cops should dress like civilians and walk the streets of Antigua. Why are they being paid if they cannot take care of the perps. Maybe they are the ones who are committing those heinous crimes.

True Story!

#20 Jimmy » 2013-02-08 14:14

Many years ago, a local businessman's business was broken into and looted. Each time he would go to the Police Station and report it, the Police would ask: "Do you suspect anyone?" He would answer "No!".

They always promised to "look" into the burglaries, but never came. The next time the man's store was broken into, he went again to the Station. The Police asked him (as usual) "Do you suspect anyone?" This time the man said "Yes!" The police asked "Who?" The man replied "The Police Commissioner!" In less than five minutes after reaching back home two Police jeeps with sirens wailing arrived.

They asked the man why would you accuse the Commissioner of being involved in the break-ins? His reply: "Because he as never sent anyone to investigate after two such complaints, so I thought he might be in co-hoots with the thieves!"

SAFETY FIRST-PEOPLE FIRST

#19 GARRAT » 2013-02-08 14:08

Let us cut across the chase. This is not taking any political sides. This is taking the side of safety for all people. The UPP Government is truly out of its depths in handling crime. This is not just a snatch and rob, these crimes are armed robberies. This is a plethora of guns on our streets. It calls for unusual and special strategies to get them off our streets. Vere Browne, Errol Cort, Baldwin Spencer and Justin Simon are sitting idly by while our women and 69 year old grandfather are being raped and citizens are held up and terrorized every damn day by masked, armed gun men. In the mean .while no sector of this sick community is raising their voices. The Churches prefer to hold on to their duty free concessions rather than loosing them if they speak out. This is crazy! wHERE IS Giselle Isaac and she woman organization that love to open them mouth? Mouth shut but make any of them become a victim, they would expect the Nations sympathy. Let us get rid of guns and save our native sons and daughters

There was a time when one homicide a year was news and while we had some crime, there has never been anything of the magnitude of what has been going on over the past 10 years or so. It keeps getting worse daily. We need a new Police Commissioner and a new Minister of National Security. They have both failed miserably in containing crime in this country of ours. While at it, we need to strengthen our immigration laws which appear to be letting in all kinds of criminals into Antigua.

#11 Real Observer » 2013-02-08 11:25

Thank God we can say that he escaped with injuries, but what would have been the reaction today if the story line was different...... ....Gravy shot and killed by robbers.
Where is the crime plan and the parliamentary committee set up and chaired by PM Spencer more Han three years ago? Do not accuse me of bringing politics Ito this very troubling issue of crime. I am being real when I identify all our problems as demonstrative of the lack of political will and a dereliction of duty on the part of those elected and appointed to serve and protect this country and its citizens.
My brother Gravy, thank God for sparing you and I pray his protection over you in he future. Shame on our political and police directorate for been incapable of managing 108 sq. miles. Do we now have consensus on the fact that its the economy stupid?

What the hell was he doing out there this time of the night alone and unarmed with his hard earned nights receipt. I say shame on my good brother because this is the second time he is the victim of an ambush and he knows the reason why. They say God takes care of fools and babies and he is neither one. The buddy plan works. Don’t travel alone after certain hours. Antigua is getting scarier by the minute. I wish the brother a speedy recovery. There is a difference between an armed bandit and an armed law abiding citizen. In these days law abiding citizens in Antigua need to be armed to protect Life, Family and property.
