Proceeds of Crime Unit Reports Success

Proceeds of Crime Unit Reports SuccessAntigua St. John's - The Proceeds of Crime Unit has reported another successful cash forfeiture under the Money Laundering Prevention Act of 1996.

Last April, Annesia Crooks, of Jamaica, arrived at the VC Bird International Airport and was discovered with a substantial amount of US currency which she had failed to declare to customs. Officers found a total of $US10,000 when they searched her.

The matter was reported to the police, and the Police Proceeds of Crime Unit (PCU) immediately launched an investigation to determine the derivation of the currency.

On April 4, 2012, an application was filed in the Magistrate’s Court to have the money detained by the court as the proceeds of some form of unlawful activity. The court, satisfied with the application, issued a detention order for the money.

The matter was heard before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh on February 4, and she concluded that the money was in fact the proceeds of some illegal activity and forfeited the money to the State.

Last July, shortly after the Proceeds of Crime Unit was formed, a successful forfeiture of $17,800 was made after a resident of Yorks was arrested and charged with larceny.

Acting Commissioner of Police Henry Christian commended the efforts of the attorney general, the Customs and Excise Department, and particularly the members of the Proceeds of Crime Unit, headed by Inspector Morrison Thomas, for their continued commitment in the fight against financial crimes.

Attempted Suicide

The police are investigating a report of an attempted suicide, after a 59-year-old Golden Grove man was hospitalised for allegedly attempting to take his own life.

Officers were alerted after a family member discovered the man in the Botanical Gardens area, after he apparently ingested rat poison on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics took the man to the Mount St John’s Medical Center, where he is receiving further medical treatment. Investigations are ongoing.
Basketball Court Stabbing

The police are investigating a stabbing incident that left a 20 year old from Fort Road at the Mount St John’s Medical Center nursing a wound to his chest .

It was reported that the young man and a fellow resident of the area got into an altercation on the basketball court. As the victim was walking away, his aggressor allegedly used a scissors to stab him.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, where his condition was reported to be stable. Another Fort Road resident is in police custody assisting with investigations into the matter. The incident took place at around 3:40 pm on Tuesday.

So are you suggesting there's somewhere else to fight??? These kids have no idea what it would be like to get thrown in jail for murder or attempted murder. Every school in Antigua should have a jail day. Every child in the 8th or 9th grade should spend a day in prison under the same conditions the prisoners do. I'm sure they will then think twice about committing crime as a career. :sigh:

Now ya talking. There should be accountability for this money and it should go to the police for equipment or police welfare period.

In reference to the Basketball Court Stabbing incident, the story is simply confusing. Because of the lack of information,we cannot determine whether the other Fort Road resident in police custody assisting investigation into the matter was detained and charged as an accomplice in the crime or is an eyewitness to the crime.

I suggest the Crime Unit uses the 'cash forfeitures' to "buy-back guns" off the streets, with all the crime plauging these lands.

What will these moneys be used for? What percentage is used for police and fighting crime and for the public directly, as we are the victim of the crimes?

In Antigua and Barbuda because of how small we are, we are more susceptible to nepotism. I recommend s lot of technological policing, cameras, more devices that is run by technology where possible, to take out officers' discretion. To increase the Zero tolerance policing and fairness/equal treatment for all, under the law

Proceeds of Crime?

#2 The Fly » 2013-02-07 05:38

Here's a tip: When a Government official rips off millions of dollars, he/she would have lots of cash stashed at his home or in a safety deposit box...why not get a Search Warrant and go after these millions? What about a lot of vehicles in his/her possession, isn't that grounds for investigation?

Big News...held a woman with US$10,000! What about the millions on sidewalks? What about the millions on fences? What about the millions on WPP? Just a suggestion/ques tion!
