Woman Collapses and Dies at Hair Salon

Police reportAntigua St. John’s - The police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death of 35-year-old Jennifer Joseph, who collapsed and died in the bathroom of a hair salon on Green Bay Hill on Monday.

Police spokesman Corporal Frankie Thomas said the deceased had a long medical history and the force is awaiting the results of the examination before making a pronouncement on the cause of death.

Reports are that Joseph left her hairdresser’s chair to use the bathroom but after some time elapsed without her return, the cosmetologist opted to investigate and found her lying just outside the bathroom door. This was around 12:30 pm.

Cpl Thomas said it is suspected that the woman suffered from epilepsy but this could not be confirmed at this time. “This is definitely a matter that we will investigate further,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Thomas disclosed that the force is looking into what appears to be a “near-drowning” of a three-year-old child.

Reports are that a father went to the beach in the Runaway Bay area with his 10-year-old son and the toddler and left them for a few moments.

Cpl. Thomas said that based on reports, the father was said he “briefly turned his back” to get a towel from the vehicle.

“I don’t know how far from the vehicle they were but he said by the time he turned around he realised that the older one was calling out for him and the child was somewhat (submerged in the water),” Cpl Thomas said.

The toddler was rushed to the Mount St. John’s Medical Center and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he remains.

Police say investigations are ongoing and updates will be made available.

Why now?

#10 Police Officer » 2012-06-19 16:07

Remember,we are still looking for persons who have integrity and who can really dig deep.
There are so much secrets that needs to be dug up.......files to be found, persons to lock up,people to send to jail for life but nothing ever happens in Antigua.
Just a bunch of talk and bribery.

...an unfortunate situation...

Greetings folks, all of us who have been to the beach with minors/children know how excited they become about playing in the sand and along the shore line. There was no mention of height of the child, but every adult should be aware that during this time of year, when ground swells are common, the area where the waves break is much deeper, that is several feet before or after the break line and MUST be aware of this especially when it comes to children who tend to play in this area, not been aware of the danger. This was a mistake that the parent make, and I am quite sure, that he is praying for a positive end result as we all should be for the child and family.
There are many of us who is ready and willing to quote the law, adjuicate and throw away the key to the cell, yet we will see "the law" been broken, know that "the law" is been broken and turn a blind eye to these circumstances and in many cases, these are the crimes which are having a drastic negative effect on our culture and society.

It is easy for us to sit here and judge that father. At least he was spending quality time with his children.
Yes it went horribly wrong, but Mr. Pompey was very insensitive.
As a father of two small children, sometimes it suuprises you how fast thing s can happen.
How many of us are attentive 100 % percent of the time ?
Not to excuse his error, but Mr. Pompey there is no need to paint the father in the light of a common criminal.

ERIC-NOT WORRIED

Got you Eric, but lose no sleep over such sarcasm. Negativitism is all part of the human experience.

If a person cannot stand the "...heat in the kitchen," he should get out.
Do know that like many visitors to Caribarena, you will not be that negligent or expressive.

Best wishes to MARCO.

INTERESTING COMMENTS

#6 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2012-06-19 12:17

Very interesting comments. Even when they disagree, none may disparage the views of others. Even the "...dull and the ignorant, they too have their story."

The information provided in the first commentary was not intended for the "...RESPONSIBLE " parents, guardians or adults.

Hence, those who might be inclined to act "...recklessly, carelessly, and/or negligently" may take counsel.

This advice was based on sound professional knowledge, practice and experience, as it affects Law enforcement.

Recently there had been two unfortunate shocking and tragic drowning. Let us all encourage the "...IRRESPONSIB LE" to be "...RESPONSIBLE ."

My heart goes out to this family at this time........... ..........I can't say I know what you are going thru but just the thought of having to look at your child in ICU must be hard. I'm also a mother of a toddler who at times can be very harden and loves water so I can see him doing something similar if not the same. May god be with you all and give you the strength at this time. Please remember he answers prayers so keep praying for him............ .

MUCH MORE THAN THAT

#1 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2012-06-19 06:45

Near drowning? A clear case of "...GROSS NEGLIGENCE."
Law enforcement might wish to be more helpfully enlightening.

Section "5" of the Juvenile Act 229 is quite clear that such was " ...EXPOSING JUVENILE TO PHYSICAL DANGER."
Captioned "...CRUELTY TO JUVENILE," it states (benefit of John French II):

"...Every person who, having attained the age of seventeen years and having the CUSTODY, charge or care of any Juvenile WILFULLY assaults; ...ill-treats; ...NEGLECTS; ...abandons; or ...EXPOSES such juvenile; or ...CAUSES or procures him/her to be assaulted, ill-treated, NEGLECTED, abandoned, or EXPOSED in any manner LIKELY to cause that Juvenile unnecessary suffering or injury to health including- INJURY to, or loss of sight, hearing, limb, organ or of body; and ...any mental derrangement (crazy) shall be guilty of a misdemeanor- (Indictable trial-Judge/Jur y - Penalties- 2 years; Summary- $1500 or 3months imprisonment.

Father should have taken both 3 and 10 year-olds with him to fetch towel.
