Youth Convicted After Guilty Plea

Convicted After Guilty PleaAntigua St John's - In a few weeks, punishment will be meted out to 23-year-old Damien O’Garro, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the unlawful killing of Cristina Urbaez Felix just over two years ago.

The conviction was handed down Tuesday in the High Court by Justice Keith Thom, and the prisoner was further remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) until his sentencing date on June 29.

O’Garro, of Factory Road, was initially charged with murdering the 34-year-old Dominican Republic woman, but he admitted guilt in causing her death on the lesser charge.

Felix was found dead at her Lionel Hurst Street residence in February of 2010, with a stab wound to her abdomen.

Justice Thom also convicted Orthnell Roberts of Bolans, Cedric Merchant of Potters and Glenroy Pilgrim of Willikies, who were jointly charged with possession of controlled drugs and possession with intent to supply.

The trio was remanded to HMP to await sentencing on Friday.

In the meantime, police have arrested and charged Sea View Farm resident Tares John with house breaking and larceny.

The 23 year old allegedly broke into a home at Renfrews and stole two Toshiba laptops valuing US $1,375, one Nano Apple iPod valued at US $100, one Motorola android cellular phone valued at EC $800, and one Blackberry 8900 Javelin cellular phone valued at EC $1500.

John is also accused of stealing miscellaneous pieces of jewelry while committing the same offence, to include a watch, a diamond tennis bracelet, a 14-karat gold chain, a gold ring, and several pendants. He is also accused of larceny of a pair of binoculars and an undisclosed sum of money.

The offences were committed on May 24.

The trio convicted of the drug related offences were not convicted by Justice Thom but by "a jury of their peers". In other words they had a trial in the High Court. The jurors were the ones who returned the verdict of guilty.
