Altercation at HMP Lands Two In Hospital

Antigua St John's - Two inmates at Her Majesty Prison (HMP) are warded at Mount St. John’s Medical (MSJMC) following what police describe as “an altercation” between two men sometime on Monday night.

Police spokesman Corporal Frankie Thomas said the men were transported to MSJMC with “various injuries”. He could not say for sure whether those injuries were life threatening.

“I am not certain how serious the injuries are,” Cpl. Thomas said.

He added, however, that the police are uncertain at this point whether or not they would be involved in the matter since it occurred on prison grounds and is of a nature that prison service officials can handle.

“That is something the prison authorities can take care of.  If they request police assistance that can be done,” the spokesman said.

In other police news, Caribarena sought clarification on an alleged shooting incident on a farm in Bolans.

Reports are that four individuals were allegedly caught trespassing on the Round South property belonging to Derek George. George reportedly told police that his dogs alerted him to the intrusion and that he confronted the men.

He also said that he heard what he thought were the sounds of four gunshots that prompted him to contact the Bolans Police Station.

Cpl. Thomas confirmed that officers from that station are looking into the matter but he declined to provide any details.

“I am not in a position to share much information on this matter as officers are in the middle of the investigation,” Cpl. Thomas said.

Caribarena understands that at least one spent shell was recovered at the scene, and that a young man is in custody assisting with the investigation.
