Officer Allegedly Arrested for Stripping Car

Officer Allegedly Arrested for Stripping CarAntigua St John's - A police officer has allegedly been detained in connection with stripping the parts from a car over the weekend.

The officer was allegedly part of a trio that fled the scene in Cassada Gardens when the police showed up. He was reportedly later arrested at Police Headquarters.

Attempts to secure further information from Police PRO William Holder have so far been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the 45th annual Antigua Sailing Week opened on Sunday with increased security presence by the police in the English Harbour area.

National Security Minister Dr Errol Cort, who was among thousands enjoying the after-race party, confirmed that there has been a concerted effort by the security forces.

“Sailing Week and the yachting sector in general are very important to the economy of Antigua And Barbuda and we made sure that we go all out to make people attending the events feel safe in the environment,” he said.

He said additional officers were moved to the nearby Coast Guard facility as part of the heightened security operation.

“While you see increased presence of uniformed police officers all around the area, there is also an equal amount of plainclothes officers mingling in the crowds as well,” Dr Cort said.

There have been concerns about security in the English Harbour area after a number of criminal acts in recent years. All the Sailing Week activities are taking place at English Harbour, including the after-race parties.

This year, there are 120 yachts taking place - an increase of 30 from last year.

Meanwhile, in other news, two senior citizens who attended a funeral on Friday left with more than just grief and sorrow over the death of a loved one.

The two sisters one visiting from the US and the other an Antiguan resident went to the St John's cemetery in a rental car which was reportedly parked near the gatehouse.

They went to the graveside, and on returning to the vehicle discovered that the window had been broken, and a handbag stolen.

A handbag containing an Antiguan passport, drivers license voter registration card and a US passport, along with about $10,000 in US and  EC currency was taken.

The incident was reported to the police. Up to press time no one has been arrested and the bag and it's content have not been recovered.

No Gratitude for the Police

#12 ALP Pickney » 2012-05-02 08:04

If I am to asstertain the thought process of Gratitude, I should be grateful to the police for catching the theives. I want to know at what price? I would rather not have the police rob, murder, and violate me and then be grateful they catch the person. Lets prevent these people from entering the force in the first place. I want to trust the police but, its not possible at this point.

Transform The RABPF

#11 John French II » 2012-05-01 00:36

Notes From A native Son Of The Rock. Many of the Rascals were in the Force before the CoP arrived. The Mounties were engaged in redesigning, reengineering, restructuring and realigning. The Blues wanted control hence the CoP. The Purtan protests too much, is a drift and too engaged in the political with the Min of Sec.
The Transformation Process began by the Mounties, now that the racial animus has been removed, must be reintroduced.
Dismantle the Military. Permit them to become members of the Coast Guard, the Police and Fire departments. The Military Chief should lead either the Coast Guard or Police. Given the police situation, opt for Police. The Police is also responsible for External Defence. Many of the Military Officers should be place in the Police to ensure and assist with the total transformation of that Department.
The Coast Guard, Police & Fire Department should be paid a salary commensurate with an increased responsibility in the society. More Fire Houses should be strategically placed throughout the Island - no more than 15 mins from any settlement. They should be EMS trained and Responders.
Heaven Help The NationOf Antigua & Barbuda.

We see these incidents with increasing frequency: Policemen getting together with their criminal friends to commit crimes. This latest catch is an indication of how serious the problem is.

Commish too busy with ZDK & ALP marches

#8 Wadadli Blogger » 2012-04-30 19:26

The police commisioner is too busy with the politics of the day and finding out who is talking and saying what on ZDK radio to study his own police force. This has to be the most political commisioner in the history of Antigua & Barbuda ... he will never be able to controll his force ... he seems to think all his officers are stupid and can't see his obvious bias. He must believe they all got their jobs by appointment like him ... with his upfront bias of the opposition he has to be alienating some of his officers who might rather the ALP but don't care for the politics to be brought into the police force!!!

Police should not investigate police get an independent body!

#6 Antigua » 2012-04-30 12:49

I think that there should be an independent board that looks at investigation like these because its not an independent investigation when police men are involved. Therefore the police should not investigate the police.

10,000 dollars?

#5 Common Sense » 2012-04-30 12:35

No offense to the mourning victims BUT what the heck were they doing with 10,000 dollars (whether in EC or US) in their car? As someone who's car HAS been broken into, it is always best to never carry large amounts of cash on you. ATM machines are quite easily accessible. Please everyone, do NOT carry large amounts of cash on you, or leave any in your house/car!

Dessalines

Dessalines that is one of the rare posts where I agree with you. Real steps must be taken to root out this cancer. We can no longer pretend it no longer exists.

for Action

#3 Gratitude » 2012-04-30 09:03

We should be thanking the police for not covering up these crimes. At least they are weeding out the bad apples... one by one.

Another police officer?????

#2 Dessalines » 2012-04-30 08:02

Well the general public has been saying this for years - that police officers were involved in all these 'unsolvable' crimes plaguing Antigua. When the mounties came we thought there would be a purge of the force of the bad apples, however this was not to be. This is the 4th police officer in as many months implicated in a crime they are being paid to prevent and solve. The police force leadership cannot tell us this is a case of bad apples any more. This is more of a culture or even a cancer in the force and it is high time for an independent body to be commissioned to police the police.

who watches the police?

#1 Police da Police » 2012-04-30 07:57

it's becoming sickening hearing about the rising crime in Antigua only to discover the crimes are being committed by the same people who we put in positions to protect & serve us. Who selects these people to enter into the force?
Commissioner you need to take control of your people. Soon the people will start defending themselves from the police. If we have no trust in the police then who can we place our trust in?
