The Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU), which is aligned to the main opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP), has elected Alrick Daniel as its new General Secretary, five months after the controversial suspension of Stafford Joseph from the post.
But Joseph is contending that the election of his successor at the 70th Annual Delegates Conference on Sunday was unlawful and is calling on the Labour Commissioner Hesketh Williams to intervene.
“The union is bound by the law like every other organisation and the law says the union’s elections must be held every two years at most, so whatever happened is illegal because the last election was in September 2007,” Joseph said.
“I am just a layman but hopefully the labour commissioner who is the relevant authority will deal with the matter as the law requires.”
Last September Joseph was accused of undermining the relationship between the union and the ALP and was suspended for 120 days, with pay, pending an investigation.

But he said the suspension was illegal and took the matter to the Labour Commissioner, who ruled on December 23, that Joseph should receive notice pay, payment for five months’ vacation, severance, immediate loss of earning, future loss of earnings and payment for the manner in which he was dismissed.
Daniel previously held the position of assistant general secretary and has been acting in the post of General Secretary since Joseph’s suspension.
