UN Report Cites Rise in Gang Killings

Caribbean-Human-Development-Report-2012Antigua St John's - A new United Nations report has said gang-related killings have increased across the region, leading to a loss of up to four percent in economic activity.

A Caribbean Human Development Report 2012 survey was conducted in Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Suriname.

The Caribbean and Latin America, according to the UN Development Programme report, accounted for 27 percent of homicides worldwide.

Jamaica's murder rates were listed as the third highest in the world, with El Salvador and Honduras surpassing it, according to figures from the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes.

There were 371 homicides in Trinidad and Tobago in 2006, 26.4 percent gang-related. By 2009 the country reported 506 homicides, 34.8 percent gang-related.

The report called for Caribbean governments to reverse the trend by increasing preventative measures, and boosting capacity to fight crime. Another suggestion was to provide jobs and education for young people.

When it comes to feelings of insecurity, Suriname is followed by Guyana, where 24.5% of the population fears burglaries, and Antigua & Barbuda with 22.4 percent.

At least 46 percent of all respondents in the seven countries said they feel "safe" to "very safe," in contrast to the 48 percent who claim to feel unsafe. The feeling of safety varies from a low 25 percent in Trinidad & Tobago to a high 79 percent in Barbados.

The PM needs to impose immediate visa restrictions on Jamaica and Guyana, and start deporting the ones we already have here before they completely destroy the country.
