Early Census Figures Revealed

Statistics show an increaseAntigua St John's - There are 87,774 people living in Antigua and Barbuda, according to the 2011 Census. This figure reflects a 17.7 percent rise in the total population size over the past 10 years.

Deputy Census Officer Rohan Anthony shared this information on Tuesday, in line with the department’s promise to provide the preliminary data by the end of January.

He explained that the figure includes the estimated resident population of 86,295, along with 120 crew on board  ships in the harbour, 915 hotel and guesthouse visitors, and 444 household visitors.

Statistics show an increase of about 1,000 people annually over the last decade. Of that number, 60.5 percent were in St John’s, which is home to roughly 50,392. This reflects an increase of 19.9 percent compared to the 2001 census, and 37.2 percent in comparison to 1991.

The Statistics Division representative said the growth is “evidence of the de-urbanisation of the population that has been the trend over the past 20 years.”

In Barbuda, the population has grown by 15 percent, and “maintained its uniqueness” of having more male residents than female. The total population of Barbuda stands at 1,615, ie 766 female residents, and 849 males, or 110.3 male residents to every 100 female.

Overall, in Antigua and Barbuda, there are 91.4 male residents to every 100 female.

Census 2011 covered 29,051 households, of which 1,603 did not report any population data, even though it was established that these were occupied residents, causing the department to use estimates based on the trend of the reported household size for the individual parishes.

“The average household size for Antigua & Barbuda is 3.0 in 2011 compared to 3.1 in 2001 and 3.2 in 1991,” the department reported.

Guesses were employed as a last resort, since 8,309 households were classed as “no contact”. Of these, the department said 1,081 were “no one at home,” 546 were “refusal,” 4,303 were “vacant,” 1,545 were “closed,” and 834 were “other”.

Census Project Manager Kathleen Forde said the department was very pleased to have reached the stage where it is able to deliver the findings of the census to the public in the timeframe promised.

Mr Dadlison that's why he is there because he needs Trinidad approval. I honestly don't tink TnT needs our approval for anything just by the way we accept them when they come here to perform, wake up.

The population chart in growing on an annual basis. However, the jobs available chart is decreasing on an annual basis. Therefore, poverty will increase. I would like to see further analysis and cross section of the data. How many of the population growth is from new birth? What part is immigration playing? How many from naturalized immigrants, etc...?

Wow, 87, 774 living on the island! Good job, Statistics Department! Why some of us want a re-count? I am sure my friend, Mr. PLM, would agree with this Census Figures, so why questioned the good job by the Department? At least, we are not getting a "guesstimate" of the unemployment figures!

Please, get better than that...before and during the census alot of people were hiding for whatever reasons from being counted. and now you have the 'gal' to tell the Census Dept. that their numbers are wrong.

Any right thinking person would understand if you stated it was "incorrect" BUT for now the numbers are "correct"; judging from the paticipants that participated in the census.

In other words if you went on the streets and asked the question, How many people are driving their own car today? a few would say "yea", some would hide, some would not answer and some would say "nay" the number you will have to go with to state who drove their car today is the "yea" and the "nay" NOT ALL the people on the street.

Quote:
Deputy Census Officer Rohan Anthony response to what accounted for the 4,303 vacant homes in the report was, “…most of the vacant dwellings in our analysis are located in St Mary’s and St Paul’s, and those are areas where you find persons living overseas having two homes and so on.”

Hard Knoxx

#5 carvaa » 2012-02-01 08:08

For the first time in the history of Road March tunes in Antigua we are being laugh at in Trinidad. After an interview by JW&Blaze our road march and party monarch king Hard Knoxx and his Kentucky tune is taking a beaten. Phrase like " he is not all together ", "off the far left", "taking up good space", "you trying to ask a serious question and this guy keep clucking like a chicken is he all there"," he will be dealt with brutally" " He did find the time to plug the Kentucky corp". Mr Minister of culture Adams if a miracle don't fall from the sky Party night, this might be Antigua last free bye to the Party finals. The radio DJ'S and Personalties, tv talk show host, we the public and even you Mr Minister and your cultural department have to be truthful to these Artistes.

Single & loving it in Barbuda

#3 Smoke n Mirors » 2012-02-01 07:30

More males than females in Barbuda means that I as a single woman would have my pick of the litter. Forget Antigua, Barbuda is the place to be for women who cannot find a decent man..

To think you have free education plus you pay people to count and they can't even do that...who do you think you're fooling when you say there is 87,774 people on this rock.

Count again there are plenty more than that.

#1 tenman » 2012-02-01 07:19

Its good to have some figures because rumor had us over 100K. I can only hope that action will be taken against the refusals since the PM has publicly stated its against the law to not cooperate with the census
