Valentine Vendors Invited

Valentine Vendors InvitedAntigua St John's - The St John’s Development Corporation is accepting application forms for Valentine Vending 2012, which will run from February 4 to 18.

Vendors must apply at the St John’s Development Corporation between 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Thursday, and Friday from 8 am to 3 pm.

The license fees for the period are as follows:

$200 - clothing, gifts, toys and flowers
$200 - food
$100 - coolers and trays only
$50 - mandatory alternate fee
$20 - mandatory clean-up fee

The rules governing street vending for the period include the following:

1.    No vending is allowed alongside any bank during working hours.

2.    The vendor must not block or obscure the passage to any authorized business in St John’s city. Vendors must sell only in spot assigned by SJDC.

3.    The vendor selling food must have a valid food handler’s permit. Food vendors with BBQ grills must have a fire extinguisher while plying their trade.

4.    The vendor selling alcoholic beverages must have a valid liquor license.

5.    The maximum size of tents must be 10'x10'. The vendor is allowed the use of a tent or umbrella, not both. No tents or umbrellas are allowed in the streets, only on sidewalks.

6.    The vendor must keep his/her stall table or fittings clean and free of litter. He/she must remove his/her tables, chairs, trays, crates, tents, and all other structures at the end of the work day. Failure to remove these items will result in the Corporation moving these items, at the expense of the vendor, and revoking the vendor's license.

7.    The St John’s Development Corporation will not be liable for any damages caused to pedestrians or vehicles in the event that any fixture erected by the vendor should collapse.

Illegal vending is punishable, upon summary conviction, to a fine of $2,000, or imprisonment not exceeding two months.

I think the vendors should be permanently banned from the streets and sidewalks. It is such a hideous site to see the whole city of St.John's lined up with all these tables, carts, umbrellas and boxes. These vendors have even occupied the corners of the streets. A building was made just for them yet they still end up on the sidewalks. There are no more sidewalks for people to walk; you end up on the streets and must be very careful of not getting hit by a passing vehicle. When are the pedestrians going to be able to walk on the sidewalks again??

Illegal vending is punishable by a fine of up to $2,000? Please look up when the last person was charged with a vending violation. I think Caribarena readers would like to know how often the diligent A&B police force enforces such laws.
