Antigua St John's - A strike by workers at the Grenada station of LIAT is causing major disruption to the island’s schedule for the past several days, and while attempts are underway in St George’s to resolve the matter, the workers are getting support from their colleagues in Antigua.
General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, Senator David Massiah, says his union, which represents LIAT staff in Antigua, is offering moral support to LIAT workers in Grenada.
“We want our brothers and sisters in Grenada to know that we are standing full-square with them in this fight to get their just due in the longstanding dispute with the regional carrier,” Sen. Massiah said.
He explained that this show of solidarity support would not lead to industrial action by workers in Antigua, but it is a move designed to demonstrate to the Grenada workers and the LIAT management that there is support for their cause across the region.
The Senator said the issue in Grenada involves longstanding dispute over overtime pay for the workers that have accumulated to some $5 million. He added that recognising the airline’s precarious financial situation, the workers offered to only take two-thirds of the amount owed and asked the airline to decide the manner in which it will pay.
But according to Senator Massiah, the airline’s management reneged on the agreement reached before the Grenada Labour Department and indicated that it had an interpretation of the law that said it was not legally obligated to pay the monies in dispute.
