Sunday January 18 is the new date for the newly sanctioned Sir Robert
L Hall Agricultural Prizes & Awards Ceremony, formerly the annual
Plot-to-Plot competition.
The date was confirmed by Clarence Pilgrim, permanent secretary (Ag)
within the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Marine Resources and Agro
Industry. He said the activity was originally slated for last October,
but was postponed, initially due to inclement weather, and
subsequently due to conflicting events.
Pilgrim, however, underscored the main intent of having the ceremony,
which is to honour farmers in Antigua and Barbuda who have, in any
way, contributed to the viability of the agricultural sector.
A highlight of the evening will be that the farmer adjudged the winner
in the Plot-to-Plot segment will have the honour of having an award
conferred upon her/him suitably titled after Hall, the national icon
who was the first minister of agriculture and popularly known as the
"Father of Agricultural Diversification".The comprehensive work of Sir Robert and his then able technicians in
propelling the agriculture sector forward is widely known and documented in Antigua and Barbuda. The work plan resulted in a vibrant export commodity sector both regionally and internationally.Minister of Agriculture Joanne Massiah said, "I believe that farmers who will participate in this competition in the future will recommit themselves to that standard of excellence to which Sir Robert is remembered, and strive to produce to the highest standards befitting the stature of the man in whose name the award will be conferred. Sir Robert's contribution to the sector will forever be remembered and recognized annually from this year."
