Labour Commissioner Warns: No Favouritism

Illegal workersThe labour commissioner has sent a clear message to employers: He will not be partial in executing his duties, therefore they should not expect any favours.
Labour Commissioner Heskett Williams said some business owners have been calling him to seek leniency after labour inspectors visit their work sites.
"I don't want them to call me, because when I am calling on them in reference to workers' rights, they avoid my calls," Williams said.
He was adamant that employers must adhere to the country's labour code.
Williams stressed that 2009 would be a year of zero tolerance with respect to illegal workplace activities.
"I have been accused of being partial to employers, and out of favour with employees, and these allegations are bringing my post into disrepute," he said.
"As the labour commissioner it is my duty to ensure that employers justly treat workers, and workers fulfill their duties and pay their dues to the government," he added. "No one can really expect me to give favours when I hold such a sensitive post."
He said his department is monitoring the high occurrence of persons working illegally, and employers who knowingly hire these people because they are vulnerable and can be easily manipulated.
2008 saw an increase in labour disputes, which may have been a result of the country's economic state, Williams posited.
The Labour Department has netted a number of people working illegally in St John's.
Williams stressed that whether the offence includes a work permit violation, not honouring the minimum wage, or not paying correct rates for public holidays or overtime, they will be taking a firm stance.
He reminded employers that labour inspectors have the authority to visit any business place without notice, and also issued a warning to those who react improperly towards them
