Catch him before we do! That's the call coming from residents troubled over what they view as a lack of vigilance by the police after the rape of a deaf villager.
The 71-year-old woman was first attacked in the early hours of December 30, 2008.
After the initially encounter, the rapist reportedly returned on three consecutive nights, undetected by the police.
"They did not even bar the window that the man went in the woman house through," one neighbour told Caribarena News. "What happen? Deaf people don't have rights too? I had to go and beg some board to put across the window."
A group of villagers has already mobilized themselves, threatening vigilante justice if the police don't catch the perpetrator first.
The villagers even think they know the identity of the alleged rapist.
"He does not come around in the day, but he appears at night," one source said. "He has not been around recently, but we are looking out for him."
A reliable source also told Caribarena that the woman's son has vowed that if he finds the culprit before the police, the outcome may be serious.
Meanwhile, the counsellor working with the victim said she has been in a state of shock since the incidents.
She noted that the woman has been sleeping in the kitchen since then, and is suffering from insomnia and severe sleep depravation.
"She is traumatized over the incident but she refuses to leave her home as she says no one will force her to leave," the counsellor said.
Communicating through sign language, the woman said she ran from her home after being awoken by the man's presence, but he caught up with her, and dragged her in a nearby abandoned house. She was badly bruised, and sustained numerous scratches about her body
