Break-In An Anansi Story

Break-In An Anansi StoryThe validity of media reports of a break-in at Government House over the weekend is being questioned by spokesmen for the opposition Antigua Labour Party.

Joint hosts of an ALP-backed talk show, Molwyn Joseph and Lionel "Max" Hurst, both ridiculed the media report which said $10,000 had gone missing from a safe.

“This sounds like an Anansi story I used to hear when I was a child growing up," Joseph said. "I don’t believe anything that I have read in the article."

The parliamentarian also said such allegations would raise questions about adequate security.

“What happened to the six Defense Force officers who were stationed there? What happened to the police officers? If the government can’t protect the governor general and Government House, then who can they protect, who is safe?” he asked.

Joseph also dismissed the report of the amount that went missing, noting that this would be a serious departure from established norms and protocol.

“The permanent secretary would have to explain why she kept that much money at Government House. Does she know that this money belonged to the Treasury?” he asked.

Hurst likewise questioned the likelihood of that much money being kept there. “It is not a department such as Customs, Inland Revenue, the Passport Office, or Immigration that collect money from the public daily,” he said.

Since Government House was built in 1802, he said this has been the first report of a break-in.

The media report on Observer Radio also alleged that the report from the tribunal that looked into the conduct of three suspended members of the Electoral Commission was in the safe with the money, and the seal on it was broken.

Usually reliable police sources said they knew nothing of this incident, pointing all inquiries to Commissioner Vere Browne or National Security Minister Dr Errol Cort.

Contacted by Caribarena.com yesterday, Commissioner Browne said he had no comment.

Can we take the statement that the seal was broken to mean that the governor general has not read the report that the alleged thief beat her to it?

Well said again. Life is about love and love is about acknowledging, it is sad when a person in authority says no comment. I think it should be illegal for ministers of government, judges, commissioners and anyone elected by the public or holding public office to say, "No comments" on public matters.

I am ready to pass the law, we must talk to the people.

A lot of Antiguans made lots of offers. The word in the international community is not to do business with any Government in antigua. in fact investors are discouraged from investing. I however would love to do things in ANU and is constantly looking for ways to bring something back to my village at least but. I know things will change cause they always do. The time will come when people will get tired. It just take a little money that's all. Real investors will not go under the table. In fact it is Antiugans that will save Antigua not foriegners. Also we do not treat our caribbean brothers and sister right and we do need them for they are the ones that build up the tax base.

give me a break! - a comment for the "Comish"

#18 fnpsr » 2010-12-14 10:36

A breach in security resulting in a break in at Government house, $10,000 missing, the tribunal report may have been compromised and the Commissioner of Police, Vere Browne, does not have any comments. Give me a Break!

What does hes get paid to do?

Here is a comment for the Commissioner: "It is unfortunate that the Government house was broken into. I want the public to know that we are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of the residents of this beautiful island. We will not rest until the perpetrators are caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We are in the preliminary stages of the investigation and I cannot say very much more; but rest assured , as soon as I can, you will be the first to know. Thank you !"

If they were serious they would take us seriously. How the heck the call for antiguans to come back home to contribute and when we show up, we receive closed doors.

Patiently waiting for Cool Ruler to put his spin on this story and either blame ALP supporters for breaking into government house or ignoring the story and tell us how many crimes were committed in "28 years".

Something fishy

#14 In the middle » 2010-12-14 06:01

So because they think it is an Anansi story it means it didn't happen? Wake up people, this certainly is a cover up. No denial from Government House, no denial from the commissioner of policer, just no comment. And even if 10,000 was stolen, why couldn't it be the GG's? Come on, don't let the attempt at a cover up cause u to try to discredit the story.

Maybe if someone can find BR'ER Rabbit he may be able to shed some light on all these unanswered questions, i think he was the only one who ever tricked Anansi.

We need God

#10 my way of helping » 2010-12-14 05:08

When will we see that we need God, and the things we are going through is because we Lack God and we lack the loves he wants us to give to ourself and others?

I know we will stay the way we are because we cannot change that easily.

Let's not forget that this story was reported by Observer who has long been sympathetic and in fact apologetic of this administration' s activities on a daily basis. No identified sources were cited in their article.
Someth ing smells fishy.

Were there any surveillance devices outside and inside the building? TARL
Where were the security officers? DEY A THE WOMAN HOUSE, Husband work a night

What is the cla*sification/ security rating of the safe? HUH?....lol
How many people know the combination to the safe? Nobady
How many people knew the report was stored in the safe? I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN MONICA LUINSKI!
What was the reason for storing such large sums of money in the safe? part of the excape plan

Was there evidence of forced entry into the building/office ?
Do the security officers work inside or outside? Do they have access to the interior of the building when the staff is gone, if yes why? What is there purpose inside?
Finally , are offices such as the GG allowed to keep such large sums of the government office on property at the end of the day?

What Seal Was Broken ?

#4 PEACE » 2010-12-14 00:12

Can some one please tell the public of Antigua & Barbuda,if it is the Original Seal was Broken from the Report or was it the Seal of the Queen"s Rep after she had OPENED the Report ( DID SHE REALY OPENE THE REPORT ).

THE PUBLIC OF ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA,SHOULD NOT ACCEPT ANY THING COMING FORM THE QUEEN"S REP OR THE GOVERNMENT IN REFERENCE TO THE REPORT,AFTER THE LONG DELY AND WHAT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE PAST DAYS FROM DEC.07.I BELIEVE THE REPORT IS TAINTED.

THE COMMISSIONERS SHOULD VIA THEIR LEGAL REP SHOUL TRY AND GET THE TRIBUNAL JUDGES TO ISSUE THE REPORT PUBLICLY.
IT IS A SHAME,AFTER ACCUSING THE COMMISSIONERS AND CALLING A TRIBUNAL,YOU ARE REFUSING TO LET THEM KNOW THEIR FATE.

This is no doubt big if this is the truth. and it goes beyond $10,000. That was the diversion. Management what Management? Security what security. just a bunch of unprofessional buffoons. I believe it will get worst. Just imagine the heart it took to pull that one off. Someone is also looking for some adventure. I wonder what else they where looking for? Maybe they got a photo copy of some valueable documents? Remember the guy who broke inot the court house? you thought that was big. I am not sorry for them
