This year’s list of Awardees for National Honours will not number more than a dozen. According to Chairman of the National Honours Committee, Dr Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, one of the committee's first decisions was to limit the number of awards.
The committee also outlined very strict criteria to ensure that "only service of the highest quality is recognized and applauded," a release said.
Responding to criticism that the list has been too long at times, Quinn-Leandro noted there are some awards granted outside the National Honours Committee.
“It must be understood that the National Honours Committee Act makes provision for Awards to be granted by the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, separate and apart from those which the Committee would put forward," she said. "Therefore, we do not have full control of the final cut, even with our best intentions to keep it short.”
