Quinn Leandro Addresses Parliament

Education Minister Dr Quinn LeandroAntigua St. John's - The Member of Parliament for the constituency of St George, Dr Jacqui Quinn Leandro, made a surprise appearance at Monday’s brief sitting of the Lower House. Dr Quinn Leandro’s appearance was greeted with pleasure by her parliamentary colleagues on both sides of the chamber.

Diagnosed with breast cancer late in 2012, the minister of Education, Sports & Gender Affairs has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

During the period of her absence from normal duties, Dr Quinn Leandro’s functions as minister have been undertaken by Senator Winston Williams, who ordinarily performs as junior minister of Sports.

In her remarks to the House, Dr Quinn Leandro thanked all who had supported, assisted, showed concern, or otherwise stood by her during her trying experiences. In thanking her Cabinet colleagues for their unstinting support, the MP struggled unsuccessfully to hold back tears, especially as she expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the concern shown by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.

Dr Quinn Leandro also specifically extended her thanks to the directors and staff of the Medical Benefits Scheme. The MBS had advanced the sum of US$100,000 to defray the expenses of her treatment overseas. She also thanked in general those corporate sponsors who had generously stepped forward to offer further assistance.

The MP recalled the shock and dismay she experienced upon learning that she had breast cancer, but also expressed the relief and confidence she felt when her doctors assured her that her condition was not a death sentence. She advised her listeners that she was at the halfway stage of her treatment, and confidently promised them that she would be back in a matter of months, representing her constituency of St George.

Dr Quinn Leandro also remarked that she might join in the day’s parliamentary debate; however the brief session ended after only a few speakers had made contributions on the main matter at hand, namely the resolution to return the CIP Bill to the Upper House with the recommendation that senators reconsider their earlier rejection of the legislation.

It is so sad that we as Antiguans cannot just say nice things about each other and support each other. All we know is how to talk bad about each other. Even in sickness you guys have to redicule each other. But i am not surprise. It shows the lack of Education. Stop thriving on nonsense. Jacqui hold your head up high. God is with you. Pray for those who persecute you. Remember they did talk bad about Jesus and inspite of he rose up. Continue on the road to recovery. God Bless

I am happy to see that the Hon. Minister is doing well and well enough to make an appearance in parliament.

Illnesses, sometimes, creep up upon us, like a thief in the night, and at a time when think we are on top of the world, only to have our world topple.

I do hope the Hon. Minister, will use her experience to ensure that no other Antiguan will have to suffer or die because of the lack of funding to receive care.

In this light, upon her return, she should spearhead a national fund to solicit contributions from everyone, corporate or otherwise, to fund care for illnesses that are life threatening.

I wish you well. Keep hope alive!!

Hi MP So good to see you in a state of improved health. Doctors are not always correct in their diagnosis. So remain prayerful and commitment to a radical change in lifestyle practices---veg etarian diet, plenty of water, rest, relaxation, spiritual solitude, emotional peace and more investment in personal integrity etc

Because Health is Wealth, I recommend that you give the people of St. Georges your all... Stay home and rest and fully recovery because remission is real, very real...I have family members that suffered and died from cancer whose treatment plan predicted and promised full recovery and one year later we were burying them. So take care of your self. Leave the venom and viciousness of politics alone. But you can find more positive ways to render Public Service in fulfillment of your willing to give back to the m**. The Wise follow honest advice...Don't let Lovell and Spencer exploit your health condition to advance their agenda. When you are gone if you do go before me, they will replace you in a heart beat...

My fellow Antiguan let me say something here!!! Sickness can happen to anyone of us, so let's be more compassionate in our comments. If you cannot say something good it makes no sense commenting and making negative ones. Let's pray for one another. God bless one & all.

It is very disheartening to read some of the most duncce comments ever read in thisarticle. Why can't we be more civilize, and more sympathetic to those who are suffering, having such a dreaded disease is painful enough, but fir ersons to be making such unwarranted comments is realy unnecessary. Let's pray for her that god will grant her a speedy and successful recovery.

I feel sorry for Jacqui Quinn. However, she was wrong to call the pensioners "ragtag"!

I pray this experience will bring her closer to her God and let her see her errant ways.

Good for her. The cancer must have been caught early; otherwise, the prognosis would have been much bleaker. Hopefully, the treatment plan will put her into full remission.

Happy to see that you are back and I'm hoping you have a full recovery BUT I hope you will pay it forward. Every person who is /was diagnosed with cancer they wished they had the backing of corporate giants to sponsor their fight for life. I hope you use your good office to ensure every person that is diagnosed MBS is as generous to them also.

Advance?

#1 Bachra Mary » 2013-03-12 05:31

Just a correction - an "advance" denotes that the amount will be repaid over time. Is that the case here?
