Concerned Pensioners file Injunction

Concerned Pensioners file Injunction Antigua St. John's - President of the Pensioners’ Association, Charles ‘Eddie’ Hunte has reportedly been served with an injunction by the High Court, restricting him from holding the annual elections which were scheduled to be held today, Thursday, February 28.

Claims of financial impropriety and misuse of Associations’ property are among some of the issues a concerned group of pensioners have been complaining about for the past several months to the public and the authorities.

These concerned seniors include the associations PRO, Hudson Knight, Assistant Secretary, Doreen Phillips, Trustee Walson Bowen, among others; had filed an injunction with the High Court to prevent the holding of the elections, and were yesterday granted same.

When contacted, Phillips told Caribarena that the concerned pensioners have been trying to bring to light all that was allegedly wrong with the organisation and they are heartened to see that the injunction has now been filed upon the President, who is at the centre of all the alleged improprieties.

“We are elected officers and he does not involve us in any of his meetings. When we go to the regular monthly meeting he finds a way to object to us and bring police in the compound to take us out,” she said. “Members are very restricted on how to function due to the presidents limits imposed on them”.

Trustee, Walson Bowen, also speaking with Caribarena, emphatically stated that today’s election for the organization's members is null and void and that it will not happen.

“He has a lot of things to answer for before he can get the leeway for continuing any proper elections,” said Bowen.

Asked what it would take for the elections that are due to be held, he added that Hunte has to first answer questions involving finances among other things.

“Right now he is the secretary, he is the PRO, he is the president and he is the financial treasurer, and that is nonsense”. The injunction, he said, will hold until they have dealt with all the cases they have against him.

“He has to answer a number of questions in relationship to the accounts, in relationship to the inventory of the things we have in the association and also the inventory of the building, plus the bus as to who is supposed to be always driving the bus. We think the organisation is going to be reconstructed”.

Last year, the High Court registrar ruled that Denfield Matthew and four other members who were dismissed from the association in June should be reinstated.

I don't the the true purpose of the "Pensioners' Association" and why it should receive money from the government. The Association should be funded by its members.

With that said, here is the problem: “Right now he is the secretary, he is the PRO, he is the president and he is the financial treasurer, and that is nonsense”. I agree! This is the man with four hats! Also known as "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer." This type of organization is susceptible to abuse. No wonder, the members are upset.

Organizationally, the association should have one individual as President; one as the Vice President; one as the Secretary; one as the Treasurer and one member at large. The officers would serve a two year term and be subject to re-election.

Since one member currently holds positions, all positions should now be up for election. Members should nominate candidates to to fill these positions.

This is really bad; this problem has been allowed to fester for far too long. This organization should not be recognized or given any financial assistance by the finance minister until the books are properly audited. If at that time there is no evidence of impropriety, then all parties should meet with an arbitrator (possibly the AG) and get things back on track. If there is a problem with the finances, then the appropriate action should be taken by the police to enforce the laws if any were broken.
