Browne Wants National Crime March

Opposition Leader Gaston BrowneAntigua St. John's - Opposition Leader Gaston Browne has issued a statement on the level of crime in the country, and Tuesday’s daylight shooting in the busy Heritage Quay shopping area.

Browne has proposed a National March of Deliverance in response to the situation.

His statement is reprinted below:

My fellow Antiguans and Barbudans, over the past few weeks, we've witnessed an alarming increase in the incidents of crime in our tiny Country.  This has unfortunately reached a new level with the untimely death today, of Mrs. Powell in Heritage Quay.  This appears to have been the result of a robbery attempt that went bad.

I must first offer sympathy to Mr. Wayne Powell and the rest of the family and ask that we all keep them in our prayers at this time of their unfortunate loss.  We must all condemn this heinous crime in the strongest possible way.  I want to also urge all persons with any information related to this and other crimes to please come forward and assist the Police in bringing the perpetrator/s to justice.

Having said this, it would be remiss of me to remain silent and do nothing concerning the high level of crime that is now making us hostages in our homes, scared to even travel to and from the jobs that have already become extremely scarce in this our country.

To effective resolve the issue of crime in our country requires a national response. Recognising the threat of increased crime to national development and our quality of life, I've sought the intervention and participation of the Evangelical Association and other NGOs to come together in a National March of Deliverance, to demonstrate that we are all united against and committed to finding solutions to the crime and violence plaguing our country.

Just earlier this morning I was on the phone to the new head of the Antigua Christian Council, Rev. Bishop Kenneth Richards, explaining the need for the input of the Antigua Christian Council to take the lead on this.

Following this most recent incident, I am urged to state that the National March of Deliverance - as envisioned by me - must now take place as a matter of urgency.  Accordingly, I will encourage and facilitate the formation of a committee of Church Leaders, other NGO’s, government and opposition officials to commence the planning and implementation of this national march which will cut across the political divide.

I hope that all concerned NGOs, Church Groups and citizens will take time out to join this non-partisan march to show the criminals that we are ready to stand in solidarity to condemn their actions and work to be our brothers and sisters keepers.

Once again I want to condemn in the strongest possible terms this most recent crime, and again ask everyone to join in praying for the young lady's family and for our Nation of Antigua and Barbuda at this most difficult time.

By the look on mr browne's face, he is hard pressed not to go to his knees laughing about these recent turn of events. What great cannon fodder for the next election run: horrific unabated crime and no govt response....sen ators defeating their own parties' bills....the economy still in the tank....busines ses thwarted by government inaction and uncaring...mini sters fiddling while our beloved Antigua/Barbuda burns...the day of reckoning is coming Gaston! When you win you must do the right things to protect our people....pleas e!

You lost me on that city of Jericho line. Lives are being lost and people are living in fear. Fairy tales from a texts written over 2000 years ago by MEN who did not know the earth was round and stoned women to death for having sex will not help us now and has never helped us in the past. Natural phenomena like crime must be tackled from a pragmatic and modern stand point using time proven methods.

Praying, marching, sacrificing animals, fasting, quoting scripture or any form of seeking help from the MAN in the sky will not assist us in resolving these issues and are a waste of precious time and resources. It has never worked in the past (except in fairy tales) and there is no reason to think it will work now.

Fund Raiser would be better

#37 JP Farnsworth » 2013-02-28 08:44

Mr. Brown marching is nice but a fund raiser for the family of the deceased might be better. I'm just saying.
And then a fund raiser to put in a working CCTV system purchased from someone that knows these things. Not from one of the local criminals that sell those over priced non-functional junk boxes that break down and can't be fixed by anybody on island. It always amazes me how we buy junk that is completely useless.

John James some similar marches:
In Jamaica Sept 2012 there was a march over violence particularly the rape of 5 women in Mobay Quote:

Just this month in Ghana, thousands of persons marched against crime

Try again Observer these are different situations. Gaston is far from being a Joshua. Trayvon's circumstances are different- anything touching race matter in the USA gets national attention because Caucasians are afraid of what angry blacks will do to their investments, plus that was not a robbery. Marches are effective in nonviolent protests, for civil liberties and justice. The march against crime will only leave the houses vacant for the thieves to enter during the march. Enforce the death penalty!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Full Stop!!!!!!!!!!! !.

Special Crime fighting tax

#33 From the Sideline » 2013-02-27 23:08

I have the answer. The police said they are not properly equiped to fight crime. The Government is broke and don't have money to fund the police. So we raise a special tax for a specific period to fight crime. Public account need to be given for the moneys spend and audited by an external Accountant firm. So we can see what our taxes were used for. If the police need a helicopter or mre bullet proof vest. Night Vision gogles etc. Outside assistant. Ex- FBI pesonel. Anything that will help. Anything that money can buy we should be willing to pay for in this special tax.

You'll be surprise about the power of marching. Eversince the march of the people of God around the City of Jericho. Power scripture. Hidden for your brains. But just look at history what has had more result war or marches. Look at the civil rights marches. Look at the marches in the middle east. So marches do have a special effect on the way national issues are solved. Look how may march in Florida against the killing of a young black guy Tray Martin I believe his name was. So think again.

This kind of cold-blooded, brazen, public EXECUTION is the kind of MURDER that syndicates employ to send a MESSAGE ... The purpose of this kind of EXECUTION is to ensure that the MESSAGE is LOUD and CLEAR ... most likely intended for a close relative like a husband, child or parents. It says: THERE IS NO PLACE ON EARTH YOU CAN HIDE.

My way, you have to be kidding, because criminals in Antigua do not run any real risk of getting caught ... there was nothing to fear. An EXECUTION with a MESSAGE is not usually QUIET or ISOLATED. Like the Jamaican song says, this "GANGSTERS WILL MURDER YOU INA MIGGLE DAY" execution.

ROBBERY is FORCIBLE THEFT ... a real ROBBER does not wait for the person being robbed to comply ... He just goes forward and takes what he wants. You are familiar with the way that convenience stores are robbed in the US.

And what crazyness is going on in Antigua with people fighting or not complying with the robber's demand and paying with their lives. Life is more precious than silver or gold.

Lets hear your plan. I guess the politicians should not participate in trying to find a solution for this national crime. Or is it just that you do not want to hear from the ALP. The last time Lester Bird offered an olive branch to Baldwin to come together and work on a national crime fighting plan he Baldwin refused. None of the UPP politicians attend and not even the clergy. it is alway politics in this country. Even for something like this. And if they don't get involved you would say, they don't care. So dammed if you do dammed of you don't.

O When The Saints Go Marching In...Find Solution To This Gangsters Paradise!! pt. 2

#28 Dig It » 2013-02-27 21:57

My friends, we have heard and seen it all in this country! Only those who leaves it, knows it! Yet, I tell you the murder of this mother of five have 'anger' many of us, as we need more than 'talks' to show that we are serious and concern about crime! I ask the Leader of the New ABLP, if he is willing to go beyond a "National March of Deliverance?" What are you willing to do about the 'challenges' facing the police to "improve performance" and, at the same time, "restore-confid ence-in-the-pol ice?"
JF II, Tenman and others, until we find the 'root' of this problem, our small island will continue to be 'drifted' at sea, as 'fear' and 'panic' take over the land. Hopefully, we can see the 'change' needed in our life time, in reforming the country and bring back 'peace-and-secu rity.' I am just tired of 'singing' "O When the Saints go march in."

O when the Saints go marching in
When the Saints go marching in
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in...

When our leaders learn to cry
When our leaders learn to cry
O Lord, I want to be in that number
When the Saints go marching in

#27 Dig It » 2013-02-27 21:32

In an island of 108 square miles, six parishes, and 90,000 people, why it is so difficult to 'mobilize' and tackle crime? Why are we allowing this country to become a "gangsters paradise?" How many more mothers like Susan Powell must be killed for us to take 'sincere' and 'patriotic' action to end the 'crime wave' in our streets, businesses and homes? Yet, I pray that we as a people will rise to the occasion and together to take back our country from the criminals. Those of us who stood in the streets around Heritage Quay yesterday were 'angry' and want not only answers but an end to this serious 'gun-related crimes' in our small island.

In times of distress a nation should come together as one.I am looking back to Setember10,2001 .The United States was a politically devided country. On September11,200 1 we were attacked. The entire country came together as one body. The politicians all came on the Capital steps in a show of unity. There is politics and then there is country. In this instance whether it is in Antigua and or The United States of America.Country will always win out over politics.Marche s in Antigua has always seems to be identified with politics. In my opinion a prayer vigil would suffice.Followi ng the premise set by Gaston Browne.Antigua and Barbuda,I feel your pain.I love you Antigua.

a march is a start - my opinion

#23 tenman » 2013-02-27 15:37

In order to deal with this issue, we need unity across the political divide. The chairman seems to be suggesting, the march is part of this drive. I too listened to the last nights show and find myself in agreement with the stance that we need to be more proactive in dealing with crime. Too many times we have these issues and they seem to disappear from peoples consciences with time. The truth is we have had awful crimes which shock us: A school child was murdered in broad day light at or near the botanical gardens; A couple was murdered at a local hotel;Another mother was murdered at a local gas station and one of the persons on trail was a police man. What long term solutions will we put in place to help curtail crime? The march is about: getting the nation to coalescence around an existing plan; Getting all involved in offering opinions on how to tweak the plan

I was thinking the same-things as you but what i find strange is the criminal choosing to do it at a well known crowded area, instead of waiting for her to arrive at her home, perhaps alone or with only a few family members, why would the criminal be so brazen and risky, on doing it in clear view and a higher chance of being caught?

It this was a planned murder, i believed it would have been done more quietly and more isolated. from the evidence on the service that is practically prima facie (the place, the time, location), i would suspect it was a robbery, a desperate one, one who thought this worker would comply fully, however, she did not and he shot her. However, officer, should still investigate it as a execution style murder (premeditated) and also as a robbery that turned into murder.

Although i agree that it will take collective efforts to help solve these crimes, i suggest also that nothing will be solved except we identify the root, and without fear of criticisms,i say the govt of the UPP has a major role in the crime situation,no two ways about it,the economic situation is dire and is a pivotal cause of the rise in crime,it is also my personal and firm belief that something sinister is abound on this island. We cannot solve the problem with the causes in tow,we must cut them off first. CRIME FIGHTING IS A SCIENCE

#15 Professor » 2013-02-27 12:04

The local police may not understand that this particular case was an EXECUTION and not a ROBBERY. This simple fact makes all of the difference when conducting the necessary investigations. MURDER was the MOTIVE, not MONEY.

Big city crimes have reached our shores and the government needs to contract crime fighters with big city training and knowledge of how to solve these types of crimes. There is a well organized crime syndicate on the island and no amount of street patrols, cameras and harsher sentences can make a difference.

The crime syndicate needs to be infiltrated and disbanded from the inside. All of the external strategies being suggested will only have a minimal effect on the operations of this syndicate.

It is painful to watch our local law enforcement stumbling in the dark and grasping at straws. The government has been enundated with scores of suggestions from concerned citizens who really want to help, but tneither the government, the police force, the defense force or the citizens have the training or the experience to deal with this issue in an effective, scientific manner.

It can't be another White Elephant March today and then ten innocent people get gunned down tomorrow! If your March is for show and tell, you are wasting the people's time. Come on are we going to forget our humanity because of politics. Those condemning Mr. Browne should ask themselves why am I so cynical, or is it evil thinks as evil does.

TRY OBEAH

#9 Lord Have Mercy » 2013-02-27 09:34

Is this the best that Gaston can come up with ... his response to escalating crime is a "non-partisan march to show the criminals that we are ready to stand in solidarity to condemn their actions and work to be our brothers and sisters keepers." The criminals may break into some homes while the people are out on this USELESS march, or better yet, rob some people on their way home from the march.

How many more people must die before the government realizes that they are in over our head. The local crime syndicate is more than our scared, half-trained police and defense force can handle. It is time to call in the EXPERTS to INFILTRATE and ERADICATE with extreme prejudice.

If the government is not prepared to make the hard decisions that I am suggesting, instead of a march for DEVINE DELIVERANCE, I propose we do something more proactive and TRY OBEAH, Santeria or Vodoo:
1. Take a good BUSH BATH with Oil of Acacia and red and white lavender
2. Sacrifice and old angry cock to Shango
3. Drink some "Blow Fish" blood make a doll out of blue "common soap" and drive a nail through the root shakra.

If you are a supporter of a party, and I am damn syre you are, and if that party happens to be in government and controls the public purse from where monies must be spent to pay law enforcement officers to keep our nation safe, why must not these guys, political agenda or whatever, why they must not speak out?
